A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Most ROG Xbox Ally X20 stutter and sudden FPS-cap problems start with power delivery, not a defective GPU. A charger that cannot supply enough power can keep the handheld out of its full 35 W operating mode. The next most common causes are outdated Windows, BIOS, AMD graphics software or Armoury Crate SE; an unsuitable performance profile; too little shared VRAM; and background overlays or launchers. Work through the checks below in that order, changing one variable at a time so you can identify the actual fix.
Start with this 10-minute triage
- Connect adequate power. Plug in the Ally X20 with a 100 W USB-C Power Delivery charger and a cable rated for the charger. Open Armoury Crate SE and check for a low-power warning or a reduced operating mode.
- Install every pending update. Apply Windows Update, then use Command Center > Open Armoury Crate SE > Update Center > Check for Updates > Update All. Restart whenever Windows or Armoury Crate requests it.
- Test a performance profile. While still connected to adequate power, switch from Silent or another low-power setting to Performance or Turbo. Let the device warm up, then compare frame pacing in the same game scene.
- Check shared VRAM. In Armoury Crate, open Settings > Performance (or Operating Mode) > GPU Settings. If a VRAM-heavy title stutters or refuses to launch for lack of VRAM, increase Memory Assigned to GPU and reboot.
- Remove background variables. Close browsers, launchers you do not need, overlays, cloud-sync clients and recording software. The Xbox full-screen handheld experience is designed to defer non-essential activity while you play.
- Test one title at a time. Lower resolution or the most demanding graphics settings, disable ray tracing, and test again. If only one game fails, repair or verify that game’s files and install its latest patch before changing system-wide settings.
If every game still crashes or shows a GPU error after these checks, record the device and software details listed in the crash section and move to the recovery steps rather than repeatedly changing drivers.

Power delivery: the first check for an abrupt FPS ceiling
The X20 can reduce performance when it detects that the charger cannot provide enough power. In a 2026 hands-on test, PC Gamer found that an insufficient charger prevented the handheld from reaching its full 35 W mode. That creates a recognizable symptom: frame rates stop at an unexpectedly low level even after you select a high-performance profile, and the cap appears only when the charger is connected or when the system changes power state.
Verify the warning and operating mode
- Connect the charger directly to the Ally X20, bypassing an unpowered hub or dock for this test.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and inspect the current operating mode and any low-power notification.
- Use the same game, resolution and graphics preset on battery and on AC power. Note whether the AC test reaches a higher and steadier frame rate.
- If Armoury Crate continues to report insufficient power, test with a known-good 100 W USB-C PD charger and a suitable USB-C cable.
A 100 W charger is a way to meet the handheld’s input requirement; it is not a promise of a fixed FPS increase in every game. A title that is already GPU-limited, thermally constrained or poorly optimized may not run faster after the charger is replaced. The charger test is valuable because it separates an abrupt power ceiling from an ordinary game-performance limit.

What to avoid during diagnosis
- Do not judge performance through a dock that may negotiate less power than the charger can supply.
- Do not compare battery results with AC results while changing graphics settings at the same time.
- Do not assume a high wattage printed on a charger guarantees full output; the USB-C cable, dock and negotiated Power Delivery profile all matter.
Update Windows, Armoury Crate, BIOS and AMD graphics software
Xbox’s setup guidance recommends checking two update locations. First install all Windows updates. Then open Command Center, choose Open Armoury Crate SE, go to Update Center, select Check for Updates, and choose Update All. Restart when prompted. Also keep the BIOS and AMD graphics package current using the ASUS support channel for the ROG Xbox Ally X model.
Use a clean, repeatable update sequence
- Save your work and connect the Ally X20 to reliable AC power.
- Run Windows Update until it reports that no additional updates are available. Restart between update rounds if Windows asks.
- Open Armoury Crate SE through Command Center, select Update Center, run Check for Updates, and apply Update All.
- Restart, then check the ASUS support page for the current BIOS and AMD graphics package for model RC73XA.
- After each BIOS or graphics installation, restart before launching a game. Test the title with the same profile and settings used before the update.
Driver, BIOS, Windows, Armoury Crate SE and Xbox preview features change frequently. Version numbers and menu labels can therefore differ from an older screenshot or forum post. Prefer an ASUS-provided package or a documented recovery path over an unverified driver mirror.
Choose a profile that matches the test
Silent and other low-wattage modes reduce power use and fan noise by accepting less performance. Performance and Turbo are the useful comparison points when you are investigating low FPS while connected to adequate power. Xbox Default Game Profiles can automatically balance performance and power for supported games; Xbox initially described support for 40 games.

Run a controlled profile comparison
- Warm the device for several minutes so the comparison is not between a cold and a heat-soaked system.
- Play the same repeatable section of the game in Silent, then Performance, then Turbo if your firmware exposes all three choices.
- Keep resolution, upscaling, frame-generation settings and background applications unchanged.
- Watch for consistent frame pacing rather than a single peak-FPS number. A higher average with severe dips can feel worse than a slightly lower but stable result.
- Record the profile, charger state and observed behavior before switching to another variable.
Default Game Profiles are optional. If a supported game’s profile changes power or graphics behavior unexpectedly, temporarily disable the profile for that title and retest with a manually selected mode. Re-enable it only after you know which behavior you prefer.
Relieve VRAM pressure safely
The Ally X20 uses shared system memory for graphics. ASUS explains that a VRAM-heavy game can stutter during play or fail to launch when insufficient VRAM is available, and that allocating more of the Ally’s shared memory to the GPU can help.
Change the GPU-memory allocation
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Go to Settings and open Performance or Operating Mode, depending on the software version.
- Open GPU Settings.
- Change Memory Assigned to GPU from the current setting to a larger allocation.
- Save the change and reboot the handheld before launching the game.
A fixed, larger allocation can help a demanding title that reports inadequate VRAM, but it also leaves less memory available to Windows and the game itself. That is why the best setting is title-dependent. Test the original automatic/default allocation first; use a fixed allocation only when the game shows VRAM-related stutter or launch errors, and revert if other games become less stable.

Distinguish VRAM pressure from ordinary GPU load
- Likely VRAM pressure: the game reports insufficient video memory, refuses to launch, or stutters when high-resolution textures load.
- Likely ordinary GPU limitation: the game launches normally, GPU utilization remains high and lowering resolution or ray tracing produces a clear FPS improvement.
- Likely system or driver fault: unrelated games crash, the desktop shows visual corruption, or a GPU error appears outside a single title.
Remove background interference and overlays
Close browsers, extra game launchers, chat overlays, recording tools and non-essential synchronization software while diagnosing. The Xbox full-screen handheld experience is intended to minimize background activity and defer non-essential tasks so more resources remain available for gameplay.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test with a minimal background load
- Exit every launcher that is not required to start the game.
- Disable in-game and system overlays temporarily, including performance widgets and capture tools.
- Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization and scheduled scans.
- Restart the game and repeat the same scene used for the profile test.
If stutter disappears, re-enable services one at a time until the interfering overlay or task is identified. Leave only the tool you actually need running during play.
Use game settings to isolate frame-pacing problems
Change one graphics setting at a time. Start with resolution or the game’s upscaling mode, then lower texture quality if VRAM is the suspected limit. Disable ray tracing during diagnosis because it can impose a large GPU load. Do not change the driver, power profile, VRAM allocation and graphics preset simultaneously; you will not know which change solved the problem.

Interpret the variable-refresh display correctly
PC Gamer reported that the X20’s variable-refresh display operates from 30 to 120 Hz and handled changing frame rates with little visible stutter in testing. Variable refresh can make uneven frame delivery look smoother, but it cannot create missing GPU performance. If the game remains at a sustained low frame rate, lower settings, use an appropriate power profile or pursue a game-specific fix.
Check heat without misdiagnosing it
PC Gamer measured a maximum CPU temperature of 79 °C in its testing. That figure is a result from one test environment, not a universal limit for every game or firmware version. A warm chassis alone does not prove thermal throttling. Look for a repeatable pattern in which performance falls after several minutes, then compare the same scene in a higher airflow position and with different profiles. Keep vents clear and avoid soft surfaces that block intake.
When only one game crashes
A single-title failure usually points to that game’s files, patch level, graphics settings or launcher rather than a failing Ally X20. Update the game, verify or repair its files in the launcher, disable its overlays and reset its graphics configuration. Then test a conservative preset with ray tracing off and a lower resolution.

When every game crashes
Crashes across multiple unrelated titles suggest a system, driver, power or Armoury Crate issue. Recheck the charger warning and operating mode, finish all updates, return experimental graphics settings to defaults and test with background software closed. If the problem began immediately after a change, use the ASUS-provided rollback or recovery procedure for that component rather than applying a registry tweak found in a community post.
Collect the right details for a GPU error or support case
Write down the exact information before reinstalling anything. This turns a vague “GPU error” into a reproducible report.
- Game title and exact crash message.
- Windows build number.
- BIOS version.
- AMD graphics-driver version.
- Armoury Crate SE version.
- Selected operating mode or profile.
- Charger wattage and whether the charger was connected.
- Whether the crash occurs on battery, AC power or both.
- VRAM allocation setting and whether a reboot followed the change.
- Whether other games and the Windows desktop remain stable.
ASUS identifies the ROG Xbox Ally X as model RC73XA and documents its driver and GPU-memory controls. For unresolved Xbox Game Bar capture problems, its FAQ directs users to Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance and ASUS support. Follow those documented paths before experimenting with registry edits or unofficial driver rollbacks.
Optional graphics expansion for desk use
The ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X support USB4 expansion and compatible third-party external GPUs. A USB4 dock or eGPU can provide more graphics headroom at a desk, but it changes the setup rather than fixing an internal power, driver or game-file problem.
Internal play versus a USB4 eGPU
- Internal GPU: maximum portability and no dock or extra cable, but performance is limited by the handheld’s integrated graphics, power mode and shared memory.
- USB4 dock: convenient for connecting a monitor and peripherals; graphics performance depends on the dock’s compatibility and power-delivery arrangement.
- USB4 eGPU: the greatest potential graphics headroom for a fixed desk, with additional enclosure, GPU, cable and compatibility costs. It is not a practical solution for a portable session and should be evaluated only after the handheld itself is stable.
A decision path for persistent problems
- FPS suddenly capped when plugged in: check the charger, cable, dock and low-power warning first.
- FPS low in every game: update Windows, BIOS, AMD software and Armoury Crate; test Performance or Turbo on adequate power.
- One VRAM-heavy game stutters or will not launch: change Memory Assigned to GPU, reboot, and retest with lower texture settings.
- Stutter vanishes when overlays close: re-enable background tools one by one to find the conflict.
- Only one game crashes: patch and verify that title, then reset its graphics settings.
- Every game crashes or shows GPU errors: return settings to defaults, document versions and power conditions, and use ASUS or Microsoft recovery and support procedures.
What performance result should you expect?
There is no universal FPS target for the X20. Results vary with the game, resolution, graphics preset, power mode, driver, and support for upscaling or frame generation. Use repeatable scenes and frame pacing as your comparison method. A fix is credible when the same title, scene and settings remain stable after a reboot, not merely when one short run reports a higher peak number.
