How to Fix Stuttering, Crashes, and Controller Problems in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II

If Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II stutters, crashes, or ignores a controller on PC, work through the problem in this order: confirm the computer meets the Steam requirements, update Windows and the graphics driver, verify the game files, disable overlays, test conservative graphics settings, and then isolate the controller connection and Steam Input. This sequence separates system faults from launch bugs without assuming that an SSD, a new driver utility, or a replacement controller will automatically improve performance.

The game released on 14 October 2026. Its Steam listing specifies Windows 10/11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 8 GB of RAM, and 13 GB of storage, and advertises full controller support including Xbox controllers. Auroch Digital also acknowledged launch issues, including frame-rate drops in the Nurgle Nightmare campaign and a fatal launch error on some Intel Core Ultra systems, with hotfixes planned. Treat those two symptoms as possible game-side bugs, not proof that your hardware is defective.

Start with a clean, evidence-based check

Do not change ten settings at once. A useful diagnosis records three things: where the problem occurs, whether it is repeatable, and what changed immediately before it appeared. Menus, loading screens, and active gameplay can fail for different reasons, while a controller that works in Windows but not in the game points to a different layer than a controller that Windows cannot see.

  1. Write down the exact symptom: intermittent hitching, a complete freeze, a desktop crash, a fatal launch message, or missing controller input.
  2. Note whether it happens at startup, during a particular level, in menus, or only after several minutes.
  3. Record your CPU, GPU, Windows edition, graphics-driver version, controller model, and connection type.
  4. Make one change, relaunch, and test the same location again. Revert a change that makes the result worse.

This record prevents a settings change from being mistaken for a fix and gives the developer information it can act on if the fault persists.

Check the official PC requirements first

The Steam store listing gives the following minimum target for the Windows PC edition. Meeting it does not guarantee a particular frame rate; it establishes the baseline on which the game is expected to run.

Component Minimum listed requirement Why it matters during troubleshooting
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit A 32-bit installation or an unsupported Windows release is outside the listed target.
Processor Intel Core i5-8600K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Older CPUs can produce frame-time spikes even when average utilisation looks acceptable.
Memory 8 GB RAM Background applications can consume enough memory to worsen loading and hitching on a system near the minimum.
Graphics NVIDIA GTX 980, AMD R9 Fury, or Intel Arc A580 The GPU must support the game’s DirectX 12 rendering path and have a current driver.
Graphics API DirectX 12 Missing or damaged DirectX components can cause a launch failure rather than ordinary stutter.
Storage 13 GB This is the listed capacity requirement, not a promise that a faster drive will raise frame rates.

The same Steam listing states full controller support and specifically mentions Xbox-controller support. If your computer is below one of the listed minimums, start by reducing load and closing background programs; do not expect a driver rollback or controller swap to compensate for an unsupported configuration.

Build a clean software baseline

Update Windows and the graphics driver

Install pending Windows updates, then obtain the current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official update channel. Restart the computer after both operations. A reboot matters because a driver package can be installed without replacing the active driver until Windows restarts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, note that version in your report and test the previous known-good driver only through the manufacturer’s supported rollback process. A rollback is reversible, but it should be treated as a diagnostic step rather than a permanent recommendation.

Verify the Steam installation

In Steam, open your Library, right-click Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish, allow Steam to reacquire anything it reports as damaged, and relaunch the game. This check is especially appropriate after an interrupted update or a crash during installation.

Temporarily remove overlays and capture hooks

For one test session, turn off Steam’s in-game overlay and any GPU overlay, frame counter, recording application, or other capture tool that injects itself into a game. Do not uninstall anything yet. The purpose is to determine whether the game launches and renders correctly without additional software layers. If the clean session works, re-enable tools one at a time until the conflicting layer is identified.

Reduce and classify stutter

Use a conservative preset before fine tuning

Select a conservative graphics preset, restart the game if it requests one, and test the same scene. Change only one option per run. Keep a short note of whether the hitch appears in a menu, while a level loads, or during combat. A setting that improves loading but not gameplay is not the same fix as one that changes in-game frame pacing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Test after a complete relaunch rather than judging the first few seconds of a transition.
  • Do not claim a fixed frame rate from a single smooth room; reproduce the original location where the hitch occurred.
  • Return a setting to its previous value if the symptom becomes more severe, then test the next setting.
  • Keep overlays disabled while comparing presets so the test has one consistent software environment.

Handle Nurgle Nightmare separately

Auroch Digital’s launch notice specifically reported FPS drops in the Nurgle Nightmare campaign and said a hotfix was planned. If your stutter is confined to that campaign, check the current game update before applying community configuration edits. The status of every planned fix is not established here, so use the newest developer patch available for your installation and retain the level name and circumstances when reporting the issue.

When the game crashes or will not launch

Ordinary desktop crashes

For a crash without a distinctive error message, follow the baseline sequence: verify the PC requirements, update Windows and the GPU driver, reboot, verify Steam files, and test with overlays disabled. Use the conservative graphics preset for the first clean launch. If the crash disappears, reintroduce one overlay or setting at a time rather than restoring everything simultaneously.

Fatal launch errors on Intel Core Ultra systems

The launch notice identifies a fatal launch error affecting some Intel Core Ultra hardware. Check your processor model when the error appears at startup. If it is an Intel Core Ultra chip, look for the latest Auroch Digital hotfix or patch notice before changing unrelated drivers or editing configuration files. The announcement described hotfixes as planned; it did not establish that every affected system has already been corrected.

Capture the exact failure

Photograph or transcribe the complete error text, including any code. Record whether the failure occurs before the main menu, while loading a save, or after entering a particular campaign. That information distinguishes a launch-path error from a level-specific crash and avoids repeated generic troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix a controller that is not responding

Test USB before Bluetooth

Connect the controller directly by USB for the first isolation test. Avoid a hub or dock, use a known data-capable cable, and disconnect other gamepads while testing. If USB input works but Bluetooth does not, the game is receiving input and the next investigation is the wireless pairing or Windows Bluetooth layer rather than the game’s basic controller support.

Confirm Windows sees the device

Before opening the game, check that Windows lists the controller and that its buttons and sticks respond in the operating system’s game-controller test panel. If Windows does not detect it, repair the cable, pairing, or device connection first. Remove duplicate virtual controllers and remapping devices while testing; multiple input layers can make the wrong device appear as player one.

Compare native input with Steam Input

Steam’s controller layer can be useful, but it is also a variable. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Controller, and compare the available override choices with Steam Input enabled and disabled. Focus’s PC/Steam guidance explicitly lists disabling Steam Input as a troubleshooting action. Test one mode at a time, fully restart the game between tests, and keep the mode that produces consistent button prompts and movement.

If native input works, leave Steam Input disabled for this game and avoid adding a custom layout while diagnosing. If the controller works only with Steam Input enabled, record that fact because it identifies the input layer involved rather than proving the controller itself is faulty.

Use the controller’s supported connection

The Steam listing advertises full controller support and Xbox-controller support, but that does not make every third-party adapter, virtual device, or remapping utility equivalent. Test with one physical controller and one connection method at a time. A replacement PC controller is reasonable only when the existing device fails the Windows test or has a demonstrable cable, battery, or pairing fault; buying one is not a proven remedy for a game-side input bug.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

  • Stutter everywhere, including menus: return to the requirements check, reboot after updates, verify files, and test with overlays removed. If the computer is near the minimum, close background programs before judging a preset.
  • Stutter only in Nurgle Nightmare: check the latest developer patch first and report the campaign, mission, and repeatable location.
  • Crash before the menu: verify files, remove overlays, and check whether the CPU is an Intel Core Ultra model associated with the launch notice.
  • Crash after changing graphics: restore the last known setting, relaunch, and change one option at a time.
  • Controller absent in Windows: troubleshoot the cable, Bluetooth pairing, battery, or duplicate virtual devices before changing Steam settings.
  • Controller works in Windows but not in the game: compare Steam Input enabled and disabled, then test a direct USB connection.

When storage or replacement hardware is relevant

The game lists 13 GB of required storage. A drive that is failing, reporting errors, or nearly full deserves attention because it can affect installation and file verification. Replacing a failing or inadequate drive with a 1 TB NVMe SSD can be a sensible system-maintenance decision, but the 13 GB listing does not establish that an SSD upgrade cures Boltgun II stutter or increases FPS. Check drive health and available capacity first, and do not present an upgrade as a guaranteed game fix.

Similarly, a controller replacement is justified by a failed Windows input test, damaged cable, unreliable battery, or persistent pairing failure. It is not a substitute for checking Steam Input or a known game-side bug.

Report unresolved problems with useful detail

If the workflow does not resolve the issue, report it through Auroch Digital’s current support channel. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact error text or a precise description of the stutter.
  • CPU and GPU models, Windows version, and graphics-driver version.
  • Whether Steam file verification found damaged files.
  • Campaign, mission, menu, or loading point where the problem occurs.
  • Controller model, USB or Bluetooth connection, Windows detection result, and Steam Input setting.
  • Whether overlays and capture tools were disabled during the test.

Auroch Digital’s launch announcement states: No launch is perfect, and we have seen a couple of bugs cropping up via our bug report form and in the Steam forums. That is why a reproducible report is more useful than changing many unrelated settings. The announcement recorded planned hotfixes, so check the developer’s newest update before resubmitting an issue that may already be addressed.

What the available figures do—and do not—tell you

Steam displayed 94% positive reviews from 417 reviews when checked in 2026. That is a reception snapshot, not a crash rate, frame-rate benchmark, or guarantee that a particular PC configuration will behave identically. No independent controlled benchmark establishes a universal FPS gain from an SSD, a driver utility, a graphics preset, or a controller replacement. Use repeatable before-and-after tests on your own system and keep the evidence with your support report.
