How to Fix Stuttering, Crashes, and Controller Problems in Open-World Racing Games

Most stutter, crashes, and controller failures in an open-world racer can be isolated without randomly lowering every graphics setting. Record the exact setup and trigger, update the game and drivers, verify the installation, test the controller through different connection paths, then change one performance setting at a time. This workflow is grounded in documented Forza Horizon 5 support guidance, but the diagnostic logic also applies to other open-world racing games.

Start by separating a game bug from a local setup problem

A useful fix starts with a reproducible symptom, not a guess. A crash that occurs only when Bluetooth is enabled points to a different layer than a crash that occurs with no controller connected. A frame-time spike that appears only in one map area may indicate world streaming or a version-specific game issue, while spikes everywhere can indicate an unstable frame-rate target, driver problem, or hardware limit.

Record the state before changing anything

Create a short incident log. Include:

  • Platform and store: Windows with Steam, Windows with the Microsoft Store or Xbox app, Xbox console, or another platform.
  • Game edition and exact version or build.
  • Windows version and build number.
  • CPU, installed RAM, GPU model, and current graphics-driver version.
  • Display resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, variable-refresh-rate (VRR) state, and the current frame-rate cap.
  • Controller model, firmware version if visible, and connection method.
  • Overlays, recording tools, remapping utilities, Steam Input, and other software that can intercept input.
  • The exact trigger: launch, loading a save, entering a particular area at high speed, opening a menu, pressing a button, or connecting the controller.
  • What changed immediately before the problem began, such as a game patch, Windows update, driver update, or new peripheral.

Write a repeatable sequence in numbered form. For example: start the game with the controller connected by Bluetooth, load a particular event, drive at high speed for two minutes, and note whether the frame-time graph spikes or the game exits. This is much more useful to support staff than saying that the game is randomly broken.

Use a clean comparison run

Close the game, disconnect the controller, and run the same route with keyboard input or another supported input device. Then reconnect the controller and repeat the route. If the failure follows the controller or connection method, investigate the input path before changing graphics quality. If both runs fail at the same location, the controller is less likely to be the primary cause.

Update the complete software stack first

Support guidance for controller-linked Forza Horizon 5 crashes specifically calls for current controller firmware, Windows, and hardware drivers, followed by file verification. Updating these components before changing many settings prevents you from troubleshooting a problem that has already been fixed upstream.

  1. Install the current game update. Check the game launcher for pending downloads and restart the launcher after the update finishes.
  2. Update Windows. Reboot after installation so the new kernel, graphics components, and device drivers are actually loaded.
  3. Update the GPU driver. Record the old and new versions. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, keep the version number for a possible rollback test.
  4. Update controller firmware. For Xbox controllers, the Xbox Accessories app is the supported place to check and install firmware updates.
  5. Update chipset and Bluetooth drivers. This matters when the controller is wireless or when USB and Bluetooth devices disconnect under load.
  6. Restart before retesting. A restart clears processes and driver state that a game-only relaunch may leave active.

Release notes for Forza have documented version-specific frame drops, stuttering, PC crashes, graphics-setting resets, and long loading times. Read the current notes for your installed build before spending hours on local tuning; a patch may already target the symptom.

Fix controller detection, disconnects, and missing input

There are three practical connection paths to test: USB wired, Bluetooth, and a dedicated wireless adapter when your controller supports one. Test them separately rather than changing several devices and drivers at once.

What each connection test tells you

Connection path Isolation value What to investigate if it fails
USB wired Removes Bluetooth radio interference and most wireless power-management variables. USB cable quality, port stability, controller firmware, duplicate input layers, and game-side mapping.
Bluetooth Tests the built-in or add-in Bluetooth radio and its Windows driver. Radio interference, adapter drivers, power management, pairing state, and nearby wireless devices.
Wireless adapter Uses a separate radio and driver from Bluetooth. Adapter driver, USB placement, firmware, and conflicts with other wireless software.
Known-good Xbox Wireless Controller Provides a comparison device with a separate physical controller and firmware state. If both controllers fail in the same way, focus on Windows, drivers, the launcher, or the game rather than buying another controller.

A known-good Xbox Wireless Controller is an isolation tool, not a universal cure. If the game works over USB but not Bluetooth, do not replace the controller immediately; examine Bluetooth interference, adapter drivers, Windows power management, and pairing. If wired and wireless both fail only when Steam Input or a remapper is active, disable that extra input layer for one test.

Remove duplicate input layers for one run

Steam Input, manufacturer utilities, macro tools, and remapping software can all translate the same button press. Temporarily disable remapping and overlays, then launch the game with one input layer enabled. Restore tools one at a time after the controller works. This makes it possible to identify which layer changes the result instead of permanently losing a useful feature.

When the controller is detected but does nothing

  1. Confirm that Windows sees button and stick movement outside the game.
  2. Connect the controller by USB and restart the game; this removes Bluetooth variables.
  3. Check the game’s active input device and profile, then test a default layout before applying a custom mapping.
  4. Disable Steam Input or other remappers for one launch, especially if the game is not installed through Steam.
  5. Verify the game files after the input test. A damaged file can cause missing input as well as a crash.

Stop stutter by stabilizing frame times

Stutter is a frame-time problem, not simply a low average-FPS problem. A game can report a high average while delivering repeated long frames whenever it streams geometry, textures, traffic, or other world data. Use a frame-time graph if your overlay provides one, and prefer a steady cap over an uncapped rate that repeatedly spikes.

Check the storefront baseline

Forza Horizon 5’s Steam listing specifies Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher and graphics options including an Nvidia GTX 970, AMD RX 470, or Intel Arc A380. Treat that as a baseline for the listed edition, not as a guarantee of a fixed frame rate or identical performance in every map area. Other editions and other open-world racers can have different requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a stable frame-rate target

  1. Run the game with your normal resolution and record the highest sustained rate and the worst frame-time spikes.
  2. Set a cap below the unstable peak. For a display that fluctuates around a high rate, a lower fixed target is often smoother than an uncapped output.
  3. Retest the same route and weather or event conditions. Keep the cap if the frame-time graph is flatter, even when the average FPS is lower.
  4. Test fullscreen and borderless modes separately. Keep the mode that produces fewer spikes on your system.
  5. Leave HDR and VRR unchanged during the first comparison. Change one display feature only after you have a stable baseline.

Lower the settings most connected to open-world streaming

Setting area Why it can affect stutter Controlled test
Environment geometry and world detail Higher detail increases the amount of geometry the game must stream and draw as you travel quickly. Lower the setting one step, drive the same route, and compare frame-time spikes.
Textures Large texture allocations can increase streaming and memory pressure. Lower texture quality one step while keeping resolution unchanged.
Shadows Shadow work can create heavy frame-time costs in complex scenes. Reduce shadows and repeat the same scene or event.
Reflections Reflections add scene rendering work that is noticeable in wet or dense environments. Lower reflections and test an area where the original spike occurs.
Traffic and world-detail settings More vehicles and objects increase simulation, draw-call, and streaming work. Reduce traffic or world detail and compare a high-speed drive.
Frame-rate cap An uncapped rate can chase an unstable peak and produce repeated long frames. Use a fixed cap below the unstable peak and retain the setting only if frame times improve.

Do not change every option at once. If you lower geometry, textures, shadows, reflections, traffic, and resolution together, you will not know which change fixed the spike or which one unnecessarily reduced image quality. Keep a short record of each test and revert changes that do not affect the frame-time graph.

Temporarily remove overlays and recording

Disable game overlays, background recording, performance widgets, and chat overlays for one controlled run. These tools can add another rendering or capture layer. If stutter disappears, re-enable them individually to find the conflict; if it remains, restore them and continue with frame-cap and world-detail testing.

Recover from launch and in-game crashes

Launch-crash sequence

  1. Restart the computer once and attempt a clean launch.
  2. Install pending game and Windows updates.
  3. Update the GPU driver; if the crash follows that update, record the version and test the prior known-good driver.
  4. Update controller firmware and disconnect optional controllers or USB devices for one launch.
  5. Disable third-party overlays, recording tools, remappers, and overclocks temporarily.
  6. Verify the game files through the launcher.

On Steam, the usual file check is available from the game’s Library entry under Properties and Installed Files. Other launchers provide their own verify or repair command; use that launcher’s file-integrity function rather than deleting the installation.

Crashes during driving or loading

Record whether the crash occurs in one map area, during fast travel, when entering a race, after changing graphics settings, or after connecting a controller. Test the same sequence with overlays and overclocks removed. A crash that vanishes after file verification points toward installation corruption; one that begins after a driver update warrants a rollback comparison; one that survives both tests may be a game-version issue or a hardware-specific fault.

Controller-triggered crashes

Follow the controller isolation sequence: update firmware, switch between wired, Bluetooth, and a supported wireless adapter, update Windows and hardware drivers, then verify files. Use a known-good controller or USB cable as a comparison. The goal is to identify the failing layer, not to assume that purchasing a different controller will solve the problem.

Verify files before reinstalling

Corrupted or incomplete files can imitate several unrelated symptoms: a crash at launch, a crash when loading a world, missing controller input, graphics settings that reset, or unusually long loading. File verification replaces damaged files while preserving the rest of the installation. Restart the launcher after the check and retest the exact reproduction sequence you recorded.

If verification reports no problem, do not repeat it indefinitely. Move to the next controlled variable: connection method, overlay state, driver version, frame-rate cap, or graphics setting. Reinstalling is a later recovery step when verification cannot repair the installation or the launcher reports persistent errors.

Decide whether a driver update or rollback is safer

Current drivers are the correct starting point, but newest does not always mean best for a particular game build. If the issue began immediately after a GPU-driver update, capture both versions and test the previous known-good release. If the old driver restores stability, keep the rollback as a documented workaround and watch subsequent game and driver release notes. If the issue exists on both versions, the driver is less likely to be the sole cause.

Apply the same discipline to Bluetooth, chipset, and controller drivers. Change one driver family at a time, restart, and repeat the same controller or driving sequence. This preserves a clear before-and-after record.

Use the launcher and platform as diagnostic variables

Steam, the Microsoft Store, the Xbox app, and console editions can use different update paths, file-verification tools, input layers, and graphics defaults. Record the store and edition in every troubleshooting note. A fix found on one platform may not map to another platform’s menus or files.

  • On Steam, test with Steam Input and overlay disabled for one run, then restore them separately.
  • On the Microsoft Store or Xbox app, use the launcher’s repair or reset options only after recording the current version and account state.
  • On console, perform the equivalent update, controller-firmware, power-cycle, and reinstall checks available in the console settings.

Do not treat a platform difference as proof that the game itself is broken. First compare versions, drivers, connection methods, and reproduction steps.

Build a support ticket that can lead to a fix

If the problem survives updates, file verification, controller isolation, and controlled graphics tests, submit a ticket through the Forza troubleshooting hub. Turn 10 Studios has said that exact reproduction steps or a workaround help its team investigate more efficiently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

"For example, if you know the exact reproduction steps, or a workaround to avoid the problem altogether, we can use that additional info to more efficiently investigate a fix."

Include:

  • Platform and store, game edition, and game version.
  • Windows build, GPU model and driver version, CPU, and RAM.
  • Display refresh rate, resolution, HDR or VRR state, frame-rate cap, and relevant graphics settings.
  • Controller model, firmware status, connection method, and whether wired, Bluetooth, and adapter tests differed.
  • Overlay, recording, Steam Input, and remapping status.
  • Exact numbered reproduction steps, frequency, error text, crash timing, and the result of restarting and verifying files.
  • Any driver rollback or setting change that acts as a workaround.

Attach logs or screenshots when the support form requests them, but keep the written reproduction sequence readable. A support team can act on a repeatable route and version combination; it cannot reliably diagnose a description such as the game just stutters sometimes.

A compact decision path

  1. Is the problem reproducible? Record the route, trigger, platform, version, and hardware.
  2. Does it change with the controller disconnected? If yes, test wired, Bluetooth, and adapter paths and remove duplicate input layers.
  3. Did an update precede it? Compare current and prior driver or game versions while keeping the reproduction sequence constant.
  4. Does a stable frame cap help? If yes, tune world-detail, geometry, textures, shadows, reflections, and traffic one at a time.
  5. Does file verification change the result? If yes, corrupted files were part of the failure; if no, continue with driver, overlay, and platform isolation.
  6. Does the issue remain across clean tests? Submit the complete evidence to the game’s support system.

Apply the method to other open-world racers

The exact menu names, minimum hardware, and update policies differ outside Forza Horizon 5. The transferable method is to hold the reproduction sequence constant while changing one layer: game build, operating system, GPU driver, controller firmware, connection path, input middleware, frame cap, or world-streaming setting. Treat Forza-specific release notes and storefront requirements as evidence for that game, not as a promise that another racer has identical bugs or fixes.
