Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start with four checks that solve a large share of problems in PC indie horror games: confirm your hardware meets the game’s minimum requirements, install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates, verify the game files, and reboot. Then change one variable at a time. Stuttering usually requires reducing load or correcting GPU, shader-cache, or background-application conflicts; crashes require isolating software and driver faults; controller failures most often involve Steam Input, XInput limits, or competing input utilities.
Use this triage order before changing advanced settings
Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to know what fixed the problem. Work from the least disruptive checks to the most invasive, and keep notes about each result. The table below gives a practical order for the three symptom groups.

| Symptom | First checks | Next reversible test | More invasive step | Useful evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stutter, hitching, or sudden frame-time spikes | Requirements, game patch, Windows and GPU-driver updates | Lower resolution and demanding settings; select the high-performance GPU | Clear the game’s shader cache or test with -autoconfig for a D3D error |
When the hitch occurs, graphics settings, GPU selected, driver version |
| Crash, freeze, or immediate closing | Verify files and reboot after updates | Temporarily close overlays, capture tools, antivirus scanning, and other background applications | Change power/GPU settings, clear shader cache, or reinstall a driver only after simpler tests | Exact error text, crash-report filename, system specifications, reproduction steps |
| Controller not detected or wrong buttons | Close the game and disconnect every controller | Reconnect one device; test Steam Input enabled or disabled | Try a known XInput-compatible USB gamepad as a diagnostic | Controller model, connection type, Steam Input state, other connected devices |
These tests are deliberately reversible. Keep a record of the original setting so you can restore it after the cause is identified.

1. Confirm requirements, patches, and system readiness
Check the game’s minimum requirements
Open the game’s Steam Store page and compare its listed minimum CPU, memory, graphics hardware, operating-system version, and storage requirements with your PC. Minimum requirements are a floor, not a promise of a fixed frame rate. If your system is below them, poor performance or failure to launch is an expected possibility rather than evidence of a broken installation. Capcom’s support guidance makes the same point: a machine below minimum requirements can produce poor frame rates or prevent the game from running.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, meeting the nominal requirement is not enough if the game starts on the weaker adapter. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game executable if it is not listed, choose Options, and select High performance. Some laptops also expose a GPU choice in the manufacturer’s control panel. Connect the power adapter while testing; battery-saving modes can reduce clocks and create frame-time spikes.
Install updates, then restart
Install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update. Install the current driver for your graphics processor from the GPU manufacturer’s supported distribution channel, then restart Windows. Capcom specifically recommends updating both graphics drivers and the Windows operating system. A restart matters because a driver update may not be active until Windows and the game’s launcher have been reloaded.
Apply the game’s latest patch
Steam normally updates installed games automatically, but a paused download, offline mode, or an interrupted update can leave an older build installed. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and inspect the Updates section. Allow pending content to finish before troubleshooting settings. Record the game version shown by its launcher or title screen; developers need that value when investigating a version-specific defect.

Run Steam’s file verification
- Exit the game.
- Open Steam Library, right-click the title, and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files (called Local Files in some older Steam clients).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to complete.
- Launch the game once the download or replacement process has finished.
Verification replaces missing or damaged files; it does not lower graphics settings or repair a Windows driver. If the same crash returns after verification, do not repeatedly run the check. Move to conflict isolation and preserve the resulting error information.
Test without overlays and capture tools
Temporarily disable the Steam overlay and any GPU overlay, frame-rate counter, streaming or recording application, RGB utility, controller remapper, or hardware-monitoring tool that injects into games. Close the application completely rather than merely hiding its window. These programs can hook the game’s rendering or input path, and publishers identify concurrent applications as possible launch and stability causes.

Restart the game after each change. If the crash or stutter disappears, re-enable tools one at a time until the conflict is reproduced. That identifies the responsible utility without requiring a permanent blanket shutdown.
Check security software carefully
Security software can block a newly installed executable, quarantine a game component, or scan files while the game is loading. First, update the security product and inspect its quarantine and event history. Use a temporary, narrowly scoped test exclusion only if you understand the product’s controls; restore normal protection immediately after testing. Never download replacement executables from unofficial sites to work around a detection.
3. Reduce stutter and frame-time spikes
Lower the settings that change GPU workload most
Start with the game’s resolution, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient occlusion, view distance, and anti-aliasing. Lower one setting, restart or reload the affected area, and observe whether the hitch changes. Resolution scaling usually has the largest direct effect on GPU workload; shadows and volumetric effects can produce severe spikes in scenes with lighting or fog. If the game offers a frame-rate cap, set a stable value your system can sustain rather than allowing unrestricted peaks and drops.
A lower preset is a diagnostic, not an admission that the game must remain blurry. Once the hitch is gone, raise settings individually until you find the first one that brings it back. Note whether the problem is a constant low frame rate or a brief pause when entering a room, seeing an effect, or turning quickly; those patterns point to different causes.
Correct GPU and power selection
On dual-GPU systems, verify in Windows Graphics settings that the game uses the high-performance adapter. In the Windows power controls, select a performance-oriented mode while plugged in. Avoid testing on a nearly empty battery or with aggressive energy-saving software enabled. These changes affect the entire system, so return to your normal power profile after diagnosing the game.

Clear a damaged shader cache
Shaders are compiled for your graphics hardware and may be stored in a cache. Damaged or stale cache data can cause graphical problems and hitching after a driver or game update. Capcom documents clearing the relevant shader cache as a diagnostic step. Use the cache-clearing option provided by your GPU software or Windows, then relaunch the game and allow shader compilation to finish without interrupting it. The first run can take longer while shaders are rebuilt; judge later play sessions rather than the initial compilation pass.
Use -autoconfig for a D3D error
Steam identifies Direct3D errors as possible results of settings that exceed system capability or outdated drivers. If the game displays a D3D error before opening, right-click it in Steam, choose Properties, and enter -autoconfig in Launch Options. This asks the game to start with conservative video settings. Remove the option after a successful launch, then raise settings gradually. If the game still fails, keep the exact D3D message for the developer rather than trying random launch parameters.
4. Stop crashes, freezes, and sudden exits
Separate launch failures from in-game crashes
A game that never opens has a different diagnostic path from one that runs for 20 minutes and then closes. For a launch failure, begin with updates, file verification, and conflict isolation. For a crash during play, record the location, action, and elapsed time: loading a save, entering a particular room, changing resolution, or connecting a device. A repeatable trigger is far more useful than a general report that the game “randomly” crashed.
Use a clean test session
After verifying files, reboot Windows and launch only Steam and the game. Disconnect nonessential USB devices and close overlays, capture software, browser windows with hardware acceleration, and tuning utilities. This narrows the number of processes competing for memory, graphics hooks, and input devices. If the clean session is stable, restore applications one at a time to find the conflict.
Check memory, storage, and thermal conditions
Close applications that consume substantial memory, and ensure the drive containing the game has free space for updates and temporary files. Watch temperatures and clock behavior with a trusted monitor, but disable the monitor’s in-game overlay while testing. Thermal throttling can look like stutter before it causes a crash; an abrupt exit under heavy load can also indicate a system-level stability problem rather than a game-file problem.

Do not jump straight to a driver reinstall
A clean driver reinstall changes more of the system than a normal update and can introduce new variables. Try the documented, reversible steps first. If a crash began immediately after a driver change and affects multiple games, use the GPU manufacturer’s supported rollback or clean-install procedure, recording the previous version. If only one title is affected, provide the game developer with the evidence before making broad system changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Fix a controller that is not detected or has wrong inputs
Start with one device
- Close the game completely.
- Unplug or switch off every controller, wheel, fight stick, virtual gamepad, and USB adapter.
- Reconnect one physical controller directly to the PC, avoiding an unpowered hub for the first test.
- Launch the game and test the device.
- If it works, reconnect additional devices one at a time until the failure returns.
This procedure distinguishes a faulty cable or controller from a device-order conflict. A USB XInput-compatible gamepad is a reasonable optional diagnostic or replacement device, but it does not replace checking Steam Input and other utilities.
Understand XInput and DirectInput limits
Steam’s controller support uses XInput for many PC games. Windows limits XInput devices to four at once, so a fifth controller may be ignored even if it appears connected. Emulators, virtual controllers, overlays, capture tools, and remapping utilities can consume one of those slots or present duplicate devices. Close those programs and remove virtual devices while testing.
Some games support XInput but not DirectInput, or assign unexpected buttons when both interfaces are exposed. A controller that works in Windows but not in the game may therefore have an interface mismatch rather than defective hardware.

Test Steam Input in both states
In Steam Library, right-click the game, open Properties, and select Controller. Test the game with Steam Input enabled, then with it disabled, relaunching after each change. Do not change the setting while the game is running. Steam Input can translate a device into the interface a game expects; in other cases, translation interferes with native support.

For some DualSense or DualShock functions, Capcom specifically documents disabling Steam Input. If a PlayStation controller shows incorrect prompts, missing features, or erratic behavior, record which Steam Input state produces each result and whether the game is connected by USB or Bluetooth.
Check cables, pairing, and button mapping
Test a different USB cable and port, or remove and re-pair the Bluetooth device through Windows. Avoid judging wireless reliability while several Bluetooth devices are being paired or while the controller battery is low. In the game’s control menu, restore the default layout before creating a custom mapping. A stuck trigger or drifting stick that appears in Windows’ controller panel will also appear in the game; software remapping cannot repair failing hardware.
6. Match the fix to the symptom instead of changing everything
| If you observe this | Test this next | Why this test fits |
|---|---|---|
| Hitches only during effects-heavy scenes | Lower shadows, volumetrics, and resolution; verify the high-performance GPU | These settings raise GPU load and can expose an adapter or power-selection issue |
| Hitches begin after a graphics-driver update | Clear the shader cache, then allow a complete rebuild | Cached shader data may no longer match the driver |
| Crash occurs before the title screen | Verify files, disable overlays, and test -autoconfig for a D3D message |
Early failures commonly involve corrupted content, injected software, or unsupported video settings |
| Crash disappears when recording software is closed | Re-enable tools one at a time and update or remove the conflicting tool | The isolated reproduction identifies an application conflict |
| Controller works alone but not with another device attached | Reconnect devices individually and remove virtual controllers | XInput’s four-device limit and device-order conflicts are plausible causes |
| PlayStation controller has wrong prompts or missing functions | Test Steam Input enabled and disabled | Native and translated input paths can behave differently by game |
7. Prepare a useful report when the problem remains
Contact the game developer or platform support only after recording the results of the isolation tests. Include:
- Exact game title, installed version, and where it was obtained.
- Windows version, CPU, total memory, graphics processor, and driver version.
- Controller model, USB or Bluetooth connection, and Steam Input state.
- The exact error text, including any D3D or application-fault code.
- Steps that reproduce the problem, such as “loads the second save, then closes when entering the basement.”
- Which tests changed the behavior: file verification, clean launch, lower settings, shader-cache clearing, or removal of another device.
- The newest crash-report file requested by the developer, attached without editing its contents.
Capcom asks for system specifications and recent crash reports when problems persist. A report that identifies the game version, hardware, driver, reproduction steps, and newest log gives the developer a path to an engine- or game-specific fix. Do not attach passwords, personal documents, or unrelated files.
When to stop troubleshooting and roll back your changes
Restore launch options, graphics settings, overlays, security exclusions, and power profiles after the diagnostic test unless you have confirmed a particular change is necessary. Keep the setting that solves the problem only when you understand its trade-off—for example, a lower frame-rate cap may improve consistency while reducing peak performance, and disabling Steam Input may restore native controller support while removing Steam’s remapping layer.
If the game remains unstable on a system that meets requirements, has current updates, verified files, no conflicting background applications, and a reproducible failure, the remaining defect may be game- or engine-specific. At that point, further random changes are less valuable than a complete report with the evidence above.
