Most launch-day problems in a new PC action game can be narrowed down without replacing hardware. Start with reversible checks—restart, update Windows, the game and drivers, verify the installation, and confirm the system requirements—then isolate one variable at a time. Shader compilation, a CPU or memory limit, damaged files, conflicting utilities, wireless interference and controller API mismatches each need a different fix.
Use this order before changing advanced settings
Work from the least risky, easiest-to-reverse checks toward more targeted changes. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to know which action helped.

- Confirm support and requirements. Check that the game supports your Windows edition and that the PC meets its published minimum and recommended specifications. Recommended specifications describe a target configuration, not a promise of perfectly even frame delivery.
- Reboot the PC. A restart clears pending driver updates, stalled launcher processes and temporary memory pressure.
- Update the game and Windows. Install the latest game patch and complete pending Windows updates, then restart if Windows requests it.
- Update hardware drivers. Install current graphics, chipset and audio drivers from the relevant hardware manufacturer. A driver update can fix a crash, but it can also invalidate a shader cache, so expect to let shaders rebuild afterward.
- Verify the installation. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Other launchers provide an equivalent repair or verify command.
- Close conflict-prone software. Exit overlays, capture tools, RGB-control utilities, overclocking tools and unnecessary startup programs before testing again.
- Change one game setting or connection mode at a time. Record the result after each change so you can return to the last known-good state.
First determine what kind of failure you have
“Stutter,” “lag” and “crash” describe symptoms, not causes. A useful diagnosis starts with when the problem occurs and what changes it.
- Brief hitching during the first minutes or when entering a new area: often shader compilation or asset streaming.
- Consistently uneven motion while the frame-rate counter looks high: frame-time spikes caused by a CPU limit, shader work, background activity or thermal throttling.
- A sudden return to the desktop, freeze or launcher error: commonly damaged files, an incompatible driver, a conflicting utility, security software or unmet requirements.
- A character or camera reacts late while the picture itself is smooth: controller connection, input API, remapping software or wireless interference.
- Delayed controls together with low or erratic frame rates: frame pacing is contributing to perceived input lag; fix the performance limit as well as the controller path.
Write down whether the issue is repeatable, the exact location or action that triggers it, and whether it affects one game or every game. That distinction prevents you from replacing a controller when the real problem is a saturated CPU, or reinstalling Windows when one damaged game file is responsible.

Stop first-run stutter caused by shader compilation
Modern games compile shaders for your specific graphics hardware and driver. Compilation can happen during a loading screen, in the background or as you visit effects for the first time. The result is a short hitch even when the average frame rate is otherwise acceptable.
Let the initial compilation finish
Do not force-close the game during a clearly labelled shader-compilation stage. Square Enix Support gives an example duration of 35 to 90 minutes for a compilation process; that is an example from its support page crawled in 2026, not a universal timer. The actual duration depends on the game, processor, storage and graphics hardware. Keep the shader cache enabled and allow the process to complete while the PC is on stable power.
Recognize a cache that needs rebuilding
If the game was smooth until a graphics-driver update, an interrupted compilation or a corrupted cache, stutter can return. Use the game’s documented cache-reset option or the graphics vendor’s documented cache-reset method. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance specifically includes deleting damaged shader-cache files as a step. After a reset, the first run can stutter again while a clean cache is created; judge the result only after that work has finished.

Compare cache states correctly
| State | What to expect | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Cache enabled and already built | Most consistent traversal after the initial build | Normal play once compilation is complete |
| Cache being built | Temporary hitches when new effects are encountered | Wait, keep the game open and avoid repeated resets |
| Cache rebuilt after a driver or corruption issue | First-session stutter can recur until the new cache is complete | Recovery when stutter began after an update or damaged files |
Find the hardware limit behind persistent stutter
Meeting a recommended specification does not guarantee even frame delivery. A game can be limited by one busy CPU thread, insufficient RAM, a graphics setting that exceeds the GPU, background disk activity or heat and power limits.

Check frame time, not only average FPS
Use the game’s telemetry or a trusted performance overlay to watch frame-time consistency, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, clock speeds and RAM use. A steady 60 frames per second usually feels better than a counter that swings between 90 and 140 with frequent long frames. Note whether the spikes occur at a fixed location, after several minutes of play, or only when another application is active.
Reduce the setting that stresses the limiting component
| Setting or condition | Likely pressure | Test change |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution or render scale | GPU workload and video-memory bandwidth | Lower resolution or render scale one step and compare frame time |
| Ray tracing | GPU compute load and memory use | Turn it off temporarily to establish a baseline |
| Shadows | GPU and, in some engines, CPU draw-call work | Reduce shadow quality before changing every setting |
| Texture or model detail | Video memory and system memory | Lower detail if streaming causes hitching or memory pressure |
| Shader detail and effects | Shader compilation and GPU workload | Use a lower preset while testing, then raise individual options |
Change one row at a time, test the same scene and record the result. If lowering resolution makes little difference while one CPU thread is saturated, the processor is the limit and further GPU-quality reductions will not solve the hitching. If RAM usage approaches the installed capacity and the system starts paging to storage, close background applications before lowering image quality further.
Rule out heat and power throttling
A game that starts smoothly and degrades after several minutes may be hitting a thermal or power limit. Check temperatures and clock speeds during the slowdown, make sure vents are unobstructed, and use the power mode recommended by the PC manufacturer. Avoid overclocking while troubleshooting; return the system to stock settings so instability is not mistaken for a game bug.
Fix crashes and failures to launch
Repair files before reinstalling
Corrupted or incomplete files can stop a game at launch or crash it when a particular asset loads. Run the launcher’s verify or repair function first. Steam’s path is Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let the download and verification finish, then reboot and test before deleting the entire installation.

Use a clean startup to expose conflicts
Overlays, capture software, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, macro tools and overclocking utilities can hook into a game in ways that differ by version and API. Close them all, including optional launcher overlays, and test with only the game and essential Windows services running. If the crash disappears, re-enable utilities one at a time until the conflicting program is identified. Steam lists XInput emulators, Razer Synapse, capture software and MSI Afterburner among possible sources of controller or game conflicts.
Handle security software cautiously
Security software can block a launcher, anti-cheat component or a newly installed executable. Do not disable protection broadly. If the publisher documents an exclusion process, follow that process for the exact game folder or executable, then restore normal protection and remove the exclusion if it does not solve the problem. A generic exclusion copied from an unrelated game can create unnecessary risk.
Recheck drivers and requirements
Install a current graphics driver, chipset driver and audio driver from the hardware manufacturer, and confirm that the operating system and hardware meet the game’s published requirements. If a crash began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback or clean-install option and then retest with default graphics settings. Avoid installing multiple driver packages or unofficial tweaks while you are isolating the cause.
Capture a report before contacting support
When general checks fail, preserve evidence instead of repeatedly launching the game. Capcom’s troubleshooting guide, updated July 22, 2026, directs players to a CrashReport folder for its supported titles. The exact folder differs by game, so use the publisher’s instructions. Include the crash report, the exact reproduction steps, GPU model and driver version, Windows build, game version, graphics settings and whether verification or a clean startup changed the result.

Steam Support notes that games can fail to launch for many reasons because users combine unique hardware and software configurations. That is why a precise report—rather than only “it crashes”—helps the developer reproduce the fault.

Controller delay can originate in the pad, USB or Bluetooth connection, Windows’ input layer, a remapper, an overlay or the game’s own frame pacing. Strip the setup down to one controller before buying anything.
Run a one-controller test
- Quit the game completely.
- Disconnect every other controller, steering wheel, flight stick, virtual device and unnecessary USB input device.
- Close remappers, controller profiles, overlays and capture software.
- Connect one controller and launch the game.
- Test a repeatable action such as a short camera turn, menu selection and dodge or jump.
- Add disconnected devices back one at a time. Stop when the delay returns; the last change identifies the conflict to investigate.
Compare wired and wireless modes
| Connection | What it isolates | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
| USB wired | Removes Bluetooth radio interference, battery state and most wireless variables | If wired is responsive while wireless is delayed, investigate distance, interference, pairing and firmware rather than game graphics |
| Wireless | Tests the setup you normally use | Reconnect with a charged battery, move the receiver or controller closer, and remove competing wireless devices during the test |
A USB wired XInput PC game controller is useful as a diagnostic or replacement device because it removes wireless variables. It is not a guaranteed cure for stutter, crashes or a game that processes input late.

Check XInput and DirectInput compatibility
| Input mode | Typical behavior on Windows games | Diagnostic action |
|---|---|---|
| XInput | Common native path for modern PC games, with predictable button mapping | Test one USB XInput controller with remappers disabled |
| DirectInput | Older or different API path; some games need a compatibility layer or show unusual mappings | Check the game’s controller support and remove unnecessary emulators before testing |
If a pad works in Windows but not in the game, the issue can be API support or a conflicting virtual device rather than a defective controller. Steam specifically calls out XInput emulators as a possible conflict. Test the game’s native support first, then add only the compatibility layer the publisher or platform documents.

Separate input delay from frame delay
Lowering graphics settings can make controls feel faster when the GPU is overloaded because the game presents frames sooner. If a wired controller still feels delayed while frame times are long or erratic, fix the performance bottleneck before changing controller software. Conversely, if frame delivery is steady and only wireless mode feels late, focus on the connection and input path.
Use controlled comparisons instead of guesswork
The following test matrix keeps each experiment focused on one variable.
| Comparison | Keep constant | Measure | Useful conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired versus wireless controller | Same game scene and graphics settings | Button-to-action response and repeatability | Identifies wireless or battery-related delay |
| XInput versus DirectInput | Same physical controller where possible | Recognition, mapping and response | Identifies API or emulator conflicts |
| Cache enabled versus rebuilt | Same driver and game version | Hitches during repeated traversal | Shows whether shader data was stale or damaged |
| Lower settings versus unchanged settings | Same scene and background applications | Frame-time consistency and temperatures | Shows whether the GPU, CPU or memory path is limiting |
When a change makes the problem worse
- Stutter after a driver update: allow shaders to compile, then use the documented cache-reset method only if the cache is damaged. Do not keep deleting the cache after every launch.
- Crash after enabling an overlay or capture tool: close it, reproduce the crash, and add utilities back individually.
- Controller stops responding after adding a second device: disconnect all devices, confirm one controller works, then identify the conflicting device or virtual driver.
- Lowering settings does not change stutter: check CPU saturation, RAM pressure, storage activity and temperatures; the GPU may not be the limiting component.
- Verification finds files repeatedly: check available storage, disk health and security-software interference, then contact the publisher with verification results.
