Start with the newest game build, verify the installation, restore the game’s display defaults, and temporarily remove overlays or capture software. Then document exactly how the scene fails: black video with continuing audio, periodic hitching, or audio that steadily leads or trails the picture. Those observations are more useful than guessing at a codec or driver. As of October 19, 2026, the Steam hub lists version 1.0.1, a hotfix dated October 17; its published notes do not mention a black-screen, live-action-video stutter, or audio-sync correction.
What the symptom means—and what is actually confirmed
Tenebris Somnia is a 2D retro survival-horror adventure that pairs pixel-art gameplay with live-action scenes filmed by an award-winning crew from Argentina. The live-action material is not merely an optional reward: the executive producer describes the scenes as “directly linked to the gameplay,” with no guarantee that a scene begins or ends at a conventional checkpoint. A playback failure can therefore obscure story information and interfere with the transition back into interactive play.

There is no published percentage of players affected by these symptoms, and no official current requirement for a particular video codec, graphics driver, Proton version, or console decoder. Treat the procedures below as diagnosis and isolation, not as proof that one of those components is defective.

The developer’s demo v0.2 changelog did record “Fixed the vertical synchronization (VSync) issue.” That is a historical release note. It also mentioned text extending beyond the screen on 16:10 displays, including Steam Deck, and identified CPU-bound performance at minimum specifications. Those notes do not establish that the same defects remain in the October 2026 release.

1. Confirm the build before changing settings
Open the game’s page in the platform client and check that it is fully updated. The current official Steam listing shows a 1.0.1 hotfix dated October 17, 2026. Later updates may supersede it, so use the build number displayed by your client rather than assuming 1.0.1 is permanently current.
The 1.0.1 notice lists fixes involving achievements, a boss, puzzles and inventory. It asks players to report problems on the Steam forums, but it does not list a fix for black video, live-action-motion stutter or audio drifting out of sync. Updating is still the correct first step because an unlisted regression or scene-specific fix could be included in a newer build; do not tell yourself that the hotfix definitely solved this particular problem.
2. Verify or repair the installation
A damaged or incomplete file is one possible explanation for a scene that stops rendering, but the official notes do not say that a missing film file causes these symptoms. Verification is a low-risk way to rule out local corruption before pursuing advanced settings.

Wait for the operation to finish, then launch the game again.
- Steam Deck: open the game’s properties from its library page and use the installed-files verification command if it is available in your client. Keep the Deck connected to power while the check and any download complete.
- Xbox: install any pending game and system updates, then fully quit the game and relaunch it. Console clients do not expose Steam’s file-verification command; if the problem survives an updated, clean launch, record the scene and report it through the game’s official support channel.
Do not delete save data as a first response. A verification pass should preserve saves, while a reinstall or data reset can create a separate recovery problem.

3. Return display settings to a known baseline
Use the game’s own display menu to return resolution, display mode and VSync to their defaults. Restart the game after applying the changes so the video component is initialized again. Test the scene before changing anything else.
If the scene works at the baseline, change only one setting at a time. A useful order is display mode, then resolution, then VSync. Record the setting and result after each test. The old demo VSync note means you should not assume that a driver-level “force on” or “force off” policy is correct for every build; a forced override can mask whether the game’s current implementation is behaving as intended.
Use the monitor’s native aspect ratio when possible. The historical 16:10 text-overflow note is evidence that unusual aspect ratios have had presentation issues in earlier builds, not evidence that every 16:10 display currently breaks live-action playback.
4. Remove software that can intercept presentation
Temporarily disable overlays, screen-capture utilities, frame-rate injectors and similar presentation hooks. Examples include a platform overlay, a GPU overlay, recording software or a third-party frame limiter. This is an isolation test, not a developer-confirmed fix.

- Close the overlay or recorder completely, not only its in-game panel.
- Launch the game without an external frame cap or injected post-processing preset.
- Reproduce the same scene under the same resolution and display mode.
- Restore one tool at a time only after the scene plays correctly, so you can identify an interaction rather than changing several variables together.
If disabling an overlay changes the result, report that fact as a reproducible condition. It does not prove the overlay is universally incompatible with the game.
Classify the failure before attempting a more specific fix
Pause at the first affected scene and note whether audio and video fail together. The distinction helps support staff separate a rendering problem from a timing problem without requiring you to guess at the underlying implementation.

Fixing a black screen with continuing audio
- Quit to the platform dashboard or desktop and close the game completely. Relaunch it rather than relying on a suspended session.
- Verify the installation as described above.
- Use the game’s default resolution, display mode and VSync setting. Do not force a driver-level VSync policy while testing.
- Disable overlays, recording tools and frame injectors, then reproduce the same trigger.
- Test one alternate display mode only if the default still fails. Keep the resolution unchanged for that test so you know which variable changed.
If sound continues through a black picture in every live-action scene, report that exact pattern. If it occurs only once and a full restart clears it, include that recovery behavior; it tells support that the failure is not identical to a permanent absence of video.

First determine whether the hitch affects only the live-action layer or pauses the entire game. If gameplay remains responsive and audio remains smooth, note the issue as a video hitch. If the whole application pauses, note the duration and whether it occurs at the same transition each time.

- Run the scene at the default resolution and display mode with the game’s default VSync behavior.
- Close overlays and capture applications.
- Repeat the scene after a clean launch and compare the timing.
- Test another live-action scene, if the story allows, to establish whether the problem is isolated or global.
- Record your CPU and GPU models, operating-system version, platform, display mode, VSync state and game build. The historical demo notes identified minimum-spec performance as CPU-bound, so include the processor even when the visible symptom appears to be graphical.
A lower resolution may change workload, but it is not an established fix for this game’s live-action playback. If you try it as a diagnostic, change only the resolution and state that the result was an observation rather than an official remedy.

Do not treat every sync problem as the same. A fixed offset, periodic hitch and progressive drift can have different triggers. Use a scene with a clearly visible mouth movement or a sharp sound cue, then note the first point at which the relationship changes.
- Fixed offset: write down whether audio consistently leads or trails the picture and whether a full restart changes the amount.
- Progressive drift: note the timestamp or story beat where synchronization first slips and how far apart the tracks are near the end of the scene.
- Intermittent desynchronization: describe each hitch, whether playback catches up, and whether audio ever stops.
Return display settings to defaults and remove overlays before making any additional change. Do not install an unverified codec pack or claim that a particular driver version is required: no current official codec or driver requirement has been published for Tenebris Somnia.

These are comparison paths, not claims that one platform has a known defect. No official source currently identifies a platform-specific decoder, Proton release or driver as the cause.
How to make a useful report
The Steam hub directs players to the Steam forums for reports. A concise, reproducible report is more useful than a long list of speculative causes. Include:
- Platform and exact game build.
- CPU and GPU on PC, plus operating-system version; on Deck or Xbox, identify the hardware model.
- Scene name or the gameplay action that triggers it.
- Whether the image is black, stutters, freezes or recovers; whether audio continues; and whether audio leads, trails or drifts.
- Resolution, display mode and VSync state.
- Whether verification, a clean relaunch and disabled overlays changed the result.
- Whether the failure happens once, in one scene repeatedly or in every live-action scene.
A short video showing the trigger and the symptom can help, provided it does not expose personal information. If a restart fixes the issue, say so instead of reporting only that the scene “worked later.”
Did the latest patch fix the cutscene problem?
Not according to the published 1.0.1 notes available on October 19, 2026. The hotfix announcement lists achievement, boss, puzzle and inventory changes, and requests reports through the Steam forums. It does not claim a black-screen, FMV-stutter or audio-sync fix. The earlier v0.2 demo changelog does confirm a VSync issue was fixed in that historical build, but that statement cannot be extended to the current release.
The defensible conclusion is therefore practical rather than speculative: update first, perform the baseline checks, classify the exact symptom and report a reproducible case. Avoid presenting a codec, driver, overlay or hardware purchase as a proven solution when the developer has not published that diagnosis.
