Start by updating Tearscape in Steam, then determine whether you have consistently low frame rates or brief hitches. Those symptoms can have different causes. Test one change at a time: establish a baseline, try a single-monitor display path with HDR disabled, compare fullscreen and windowed modes, and then test frame caps and V-Sync. Tearscape has received patches that include performance optimizations, but no documented setting, launch option, driver version, or accessory fixes every computer.
What to do first
- Update the game in Steam. Open Library, select Tearscape, and allow any pending download to finish before testing. The developer’s Changelog 1.1.0 mentions “some performance optimizations,” while Changelog 1.0.5 mentions “small performance optimizations.” Patching is therefore the least speculative first step.
- Record a baseline. Note your operating system, monitor count, HDR state, display mode, V-Sync state, frame-cap setting, overlay or capture software, and graphics-driver date. Reproduce the same scene for several minutes so each later test is comparable.
- Classify the symptom. A low average frame rate and a game that pauses briefly every few seconds need different troubleshooting paths. Use the table below before changing settings.
Low FPS versus stuttering: identify the pattern

Do not use a single average FPS number to describe a hitching problem. A short frame-time spike can feel like a pause even when the average remains high. Conversely, a system that renders every frame slowly needs a different solution from one that renders quickly but irregularly.

Step 1: make sure you are testing the current build
Install pending Steam updates
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Select Tearscape and wait for the download indicator to finish. If Steam is offline, reconnect before drawing conclusions from a test.
- Open the game’s Properties and check the Updates section. Use the normal automatic-update setting rather than an old beta or experimental branch unless you intentionally need that branch.
- Close and relaunch the game after an update, then repeat the same scene used for your baseline.
The official announcement archive records performance-related work in both Changelog 1.1.0 and Changelog 1.0.5. The notes do not quantify a frame-rate increase or identify a universal fix, so an update is necessary housekeeping, not a promise that every hitch will disappear.
Do not mix a patch test with a settings test
After updating, first run the game with your existing settings. If you change the resolution, HDR, monitor layout, V-Sync, and overlays at the same time, you will not know which change mattered. Keep the baseline result and each subsequent result in a short log with the scene, duration, display mode, synchronization state, and whether a hitch occurred.

Step 2: check the official minimum requirements
Steam’s current listing gives the following minimum configurations. They are eligibility checks, not guarantees of a particular frame rate, frame-time consistency, resolution, or visual preset.

If your computer is below one of these entries, sustained low FPS is unsurprising and a software tweak may not be enough. If it is above them, do not conclude that a new graphics card or memory kit is required: the minimum list is unusually low, and it says nothing about the cause of intermittent frame-time spikes on a faster system.
Step 3: run a controlled display test
Reduce the display path to one monitor
- Disconnect or disable the second monitor temporarily, or set the operating system to show the desktop on only one display.
- Keep the same monitor, resolution, refresh rate, and game scene for the first comparison.
- Run Tearscape long enough to encounter the problem, then restore the second monitor and repeat without changing anything else.
Multiple displays can change synchronization and compositing behavior, but this test does not prove that a second monitor is the root cause. It only tells you whether the display path changes the symptom.

Turn HDR off for the comparison
Disable HDR in the operating system and, where applicable, in the display’s own menu. Test the same scene with HDR off, then restore HDR and repeat. A change in behavior identifies HDR as a useful variable; it does not establish that HDR is defective or that every Tearscape player should leave it disabled.
Compare fullscreen and windowed mode
- Run one test in the game’s fullscreen mode.
- Run the same test in windowed mode at the same effective resolution.
- Record whether the interval, duration, or severity of each hitch changes.
Do not switch monitor count, HDR, and display mode in one pass. The purpose of this sequence is isolation, not finding a mythical “best” mode that applies to every graphics driver and monitor.
Step 4: test frame pacing deliberately
Compare uncapped output with a stable cap
Run one pass with the game’s frame rate uncapped. In a second pass, use a fixed cap that your display and system can sustain consistently; for example, a 60 Hz display can be tested at 60 FPS, but that number is an experiment rather than a Tearscape requirement. If the cap changes the feel of motion or the frequency of hitches, keep it for further testing and note the exact value.

Compare V-Sync states
- Test with V-Sync enabled.
- Repeat with V-Sync disabled while keeping the frame cap and every other setting identical.
- If the game offers an in-game cap, test that cap separately from a driver-level cap so the two controls are not applied simultaneously.
V-Sync can trade tearing for added latency or different frame pacing, while uncapped rendering can produce irregular delivery when the system cannot sustain the requested rate. The correct result depends on your display path. No researched source confirms one V-Sync or cap combination as a universal Tearscape fix.

Use an external limiter only as a diagnostic
A community report says the player tested capped and uncapped rates, V-Sync, RTSS, fullscreen, windowed mode, one and two screens, HDR, and current drivers. The report does not identify a combination that solved the issue. If you use an external limiter such as RTSS, apply one limiter at a time and remove it after the comparison; overlapping caps make the result harder to interpret.
Step 5: remove overlays and capture conflicts
- Temporarily disable nonessential overlays, performance widgets, recording software, and chat overlays.
- Launch Tearscape without a capture session or background stream.
- Reproduce the same scene and compare the frame-time behavior with your baseline.
- Re-enable tools one by one if the game is stable, testing after each change.
This approach can reveal an application conflict without blaming a particular overlay in advance. If disabling everything changes nothing, restore your normal tools and continue with the driver and platform checks rather than leaving unrelated software disabled permanently.

Step 6: check drivers and the wider system
Use a current, coherent driver state
Install the current graphics driver supplied for your operating system and GPU, then restart before testing. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, compare with the previous known-good driver only if your operating system provides a supported rollback. Record the driver version in your test log; “current” changes over time and is not a diagnosis.
Separate a game problem from a Windows problem
If Tearscape still hitches after the update, single-monitor test, HDR comparison, display-mode comparison, cap/V-Sync tests, and overlay isolation, inspect broader Windows behavior. Check whether other games or desktop applications show similar pauses, and look for system-wide driver, power-management, or background-process errors. An optional PC diagnostic or driver-maintenance utility may help identify those broader conflicts, but it is not an official Tearscape fix and is not endorsed by the developer. Do not install a utility solely because it promises a guaranteed frame-rate result.

Windows
Windows players have the widest range of monitor, overlay, capture, and driver combinations, so the one-variable sequence is especially important. Begin with the Windows 10 minimum check, then test one monitor, HDR off, fullscreen versus windowed mode, and V-Sync or a stable cap. If another game also stutters, prioritize the system-level investigation; if only Tearscape does, preserve the exact Tearscape scene and settings that reproduce it.
macOS
The Steam listing specifies macOS 11.0, an Apple M1 processor and graphics, 2 GB of memory, and 400 MB of storage as the minimum. Confirm that the game is running on the supported macOS installation and that the system has completed any pending restart after an update. Use the same display isolation sequence, particularly the HDR and fullscreen/windowed comparisons, before attributing a hitch to the Apple hardware.
SteamOS and Linux
The listed SteamOS/Linux minimum is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, an Intel Core 2 Duo E8200, 2 GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 5500 or AMD Radeon R5 graphics, and 200 MB of storage. Keep the distribution, compatibility layer, display server, and monitor arrangement constant while testing; changing several of those at once prevents a useful comparison.
Steam Deck
Do not generalize one player’s Steam Deck result to every Deck. The available report says the Deck was stable with the CRT filter off, while that user’s PC continued to experience lag. Treat the filter state as a variable to test on your own device, not as proof that all Deck installations or all CRT-filter configurations behave the same way.
What one PC report does—and does not—prove
A 2026 Steam Community report describes Tearscape lagging every 5–30 seconds on a PC identified by the user as having an RX 9070, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32 GB of RAM, and current drivers. That is an individual observation, not a prevalence statistic, controlled benchmark, or developer root-cause analysis. It demonstrates why buying a faster GPU, more RAM, an SSD, a controller, or a cooling pad should not be the first response when the official requirements are so low.
When hardware action is justified
- Below minimum requirements: hardware or a supported platform upgrade may be necessary for sustained low FPS. Check the exact gap against the Steam listing before spending money.
- Above minimum requirements with low FPS only in Tearscape: finish the update and controlled display tests first. A new component is not automatically the answer.
- System-wide low FPS or stutter: investigate drivers, power settings, thermals, background processes, and operating-system errors across several applications.
- Only a particular accessory or display path triggers the issue: test another monitor, cable, refresh rate, or input device before replacing internal hardware.
There is no evidence here that a specific physical product reliably fixes Tearscape stutter. A purchase makes sense only when it addresses a separately verified system limitation.
Common mistakes that hide the cause
- Changing resolution, HDR, V-Sync, frame cap, monitor count, and overlays simultaneously.
- Comparing different scenes or play sessions instead of repeating one reproducible sequence.
- Assuming low average FPS and periodic hitching are the same problem.
- Treating a minimum requirement as a guaranteed performance target.
- Assuming that a current driver rules out every driver or application conflict.
- Interpreting one community report as proof of a widespread issue or a universal fix.
- Buying hardware before confirming that the current system is below the listed minimum or unstable in other applications.
A concise decision path
- Update Tearscape through Steam and restart it.
- Write down your platform, hardware, display arrangement, and symptom pattern.
- Check the appropriate Steam minimum requirements.
- Reproduce the issue with one monitor and HDR disabled.
- Compare fullscreen and windowed mode, changing only that setting.
- Compare uncapped output, a sustainable frame cap, and V-Sync states.
- Disable overlays and capture tools, then restore them individually.
- Check driver and system-wide behavior if the game still hitches.
- Only then decide whether a verified hardware limitation warrants an upgrade.
This sequence gives you an attributable result for each change. It also reflects what is actually established: Tearscape has received performance-oriented patches, one player reported recurring PC lag, and no available evidence identifies one setting or launch option that fixes every system.
