To fix stuttering or low FPS in an open-world racing game, first identify whether you have consistently low frame rates, brief hitches, screen tearing, or online rubberbanding. Then test basic software and graphics settings one at a time. These symptoms have different causes, so lowering graphics settings will not necessarily fix every hitch or connection problem.
Identify what kind of stutter you are seeing
Before changing settings, note whether the problem is constant or happens only in specific moments, such as entering a new area. Also record whether it began after a game patch, driver update, settings change, or hardware change. Those details help distinguish a performance limit from a new compatibility issue.

- Low FPS: The frame rate stays low while you drive, rather than dipping only briefly.
- Microstutter or hitching: The image jolts momentarily, sometimes even when the average FPS looks high.
- Screen tearing: Parts of multiple frames appear at once, often as a horizontal split.
- Rubberbanding: Your car or other players snap backward or jump around online. EA describes this as typically connection-related, so investigate network conditions rather than treating it as a graphics problem. See EA’s guide to troubleshooting PC graphics issues.
Keep track of the location, average FPS, and whether the issue is repeatable. “It stutters” is less useful for diagnosis than “FPS is low everywhere” or “brief hitches happen when I enter a new area.”
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Install available Windows updates, then check the graphics-card manufacturer’s support software or website for a current driver.
- If you play on a laptop, confirm that the game is assigned to the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics. The exact menu depends on your Windows and graphics-driver version.
- Close unnecessary background apps, especially if your PC is near the game’s minimum requirements. EA notes that meeting minimum specifications means a game can run; it does not guarantee smooth performance at maximum settings.
- If you have a custom CPU or GPU overclock, return to factory defaults as a troubleshooting test. EA cautions that unsafe overclock settings can contribute to instability and overheating.
If the problem began after using NVIDIA App’s optimization feature, NVIDIA recommends checking that the game and driver are up to date and temporarily disabling third-party tools or background apps. That is targeted troubleshooting advice for games performing poorly after optimization, not evidence that the app causes every performance issue. If the issue remains, NVIDIA suggests reporting the affected game area and average FPS; see NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance.

Lower graphics settings as a controlled test
Reduce the game’s graphics settings and check whether the problem changes. If the game requires a restart for settings to take effect, restart before comparing. Lower settings are a diagnostic step, not a universal best preset: improvement suggests the current rendering load may be too demanding, while unchanged brief hitches point toward another cause or a combination of causes.
Change one setting or group of related settings at a time and compare the same route or area. That makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped. Avoid assuming the GPU is responsible just because the symptom appears during gameplay; the game, driver, background software, or other system factors may also matter.
Compare uncapped FPS with a stable frame limit
If the game has a frame limiter, compare an uncapped run with a cap your system can hold consistently. A stable frame rate can feel smoother than a higher rate that swings sharply, but the right limit depends on the game, hardware, and display. iRacing Support recommends testing a steady limit for its simulator because uncapped rates can fluctuate; its monitor-refresh examples are not universal targets for other racing games. See iRacing’s stuttering guidance.

Consider shader compilation if hitches follow a launch or update
In some games, stuttering on first play or after an update can occur while shader data is being generated. Do not assume every open-world racer builds or exposes a shader cache in the same way: check the official support page for your exact game and version.
As a title-specific example, Square Enix says its game builds a shader cache after installation and first play and provides a Compile Shader menu option. Its support article estimates that process at 35–90 minutes depending on the PC. That estimate and menu procedure apply to that game, not as a general waiting time or fix for all racing games. Details are in Square Enix’s support article.

Temporarily disable overlays and nonessential background utilities, then test the same area. If performance improves, turn tools back on one at a time to identify a conflict rather than uninstalling everything. Both EA and NVIDIA include background apps among factors worth checking; iRacing Support also describes conflicts involving utilities in its simulator-specific cases.

Advanced changes—such as switching DirectX modes, altering BIOS settings or power plans, or changing USB configuration—should be considered only when the actual game’s support guidance points to them. EA suggests testing another DirectX version for microstutter only when the game supports it, and advises checking patch notes before switching back. iRacing’s reports about USB setups, sound drivers, replay storage, and display modes concern its own simulator and are not general fixes for every open-world racer.

When the cause is still unclear
If the steps above do not isolate the issue, consult the official support page for the exact game and edition. A useful report includes your CPU, GPU and RAM; Windows and graphics-driver versions; display refresh rate; graphics settings; where the problem occurs; average FPS; and what changed shortly before it began. This information helps distinguish a game-specific issue from a system-wide performance problem.
