You cannot install a supported PS4 emulator on an Xbox Series X to run God of War III Remastered. Xbox backward compatibility is a curated Microsoft service for selected Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games, not a general PlayStation 4 emulation layer. If you are seeing stutter, crackling audio, or crashes, first identify whether you are actually using a PC running RPCS3. RPCS3 emulates the original PlayStation 3 release, not the PS4 remaster. The troubleshooting steps below apply to that PC/PS3 scenario; they cannot turn an Xbox Series X into a PS4 emulator.

Start with the platform and edition

Most failed troubleshooting attempts begin with a title mismatch. God of War III Remastered is the PlayStation 4 release. The original God of War III is a PlayStation 3 game. They are different binaries, with different compatibility records and different emulation requirements.

Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility supports a selected catalogue of Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games. Microsoft describes the catalogue as “select” and notes that features vary by game. That service does not provide a user-installed PS4 emulator. Consequently, there is no Xbox setting, graphics option, accessory, or storage upgrade that can make the PS4 remaster run through an unsupported emulation layer.

RPCS3 is community software for PlayStation 3 emulation. Its compatibility database is organized around a specific game ID and release media. A report about the PS3 version in RPCS3 is not evidence that the PS4 remaster works on Xbox Series X.

What each platform can and cannot do

Question Xbox Series X Windows PC with RPCS3 Windows PC with the unofficial port
Target edition Only selected backward-compatible Xbox titles; no supported PS4 emulation path PlayStation 3 original God of War III, when the exact release is supported PS4 remaster code through a separate, unofficial Windows project
Software model Microsoft-curated backward compatibility Community PlayStation 3 emulator Unofficial Windows port running x86-64 code
Stutter or audio fix documented here None, because the PS4-emulation path is unsupported Experimental SPURS and process-priority tests from an RPCS3 issue Not established by the cited evidence
Compatibility identity Xbox catalogue entry, if one exists Exact RPCS3 game ID and media entry PS4 dump identifier CUSA01623, version 1.02
Ownership requirement Valid Xbox licence for a supported Xbox title Your legally obtained PS3 game and required system data Your legally obtained PS4 dump

Use the column that matches your actual setup. Do not apply RPCS3 advice to an Xbox console, and do not assume that a file or label containing “Remastered” is interchangeable with the PS3 release.

If you are on Xbox Series X

There is no supported emulator configuration to repair

When an Xbox Series X is the only device involved, stutter, missing audio, or a crash cannot be diagnosed as an RPCS3 configuration problem. RPCS3 does not run as a supported Xbox Series X application, and Xbox backward compatibility is not a general PS4 layer. Reinstalling the game, changing Xbox display settings, attaching an external SSD, or buying a different headset does not create that missing compatibility layer.

Check whether the title is actually an Xbox release

  1. Open the Xbox game or store listing and verify the platform shown for your licence.
  2. Confirm that the game is an Xbox 360, original Xbox, or Xbox One title included in Microsoft’s selected backward-compatible catalogue.
  3. If the listing is for the PS4 remaster, stop treating the Xbox as an emulator host. You need the supported original platform or a separate PC-based option.

No dated independent benchmark establishes a stable Xbox Series X configuration for emulating the PS4 remaster. Treat claims that a particular Xbox accessory or console setting fixes it as unverified.

If you are actually running RPCS3 on a Windows PC

The following procedure is for the PS3 original, not God of War III Remastered. The official RPCS3 issue tracker records a regression titled “Heavy stutter in God of War 3 [BCES00510] from build 0.0.28-15404 onward.” The report describes frame stutter that disappeared when the RPCS3 window was unfocused. The reporter also found that changing process priority or setting SPURS to 2 or 3 helped on a weak six-core CPU. Later comments reported the problem still occurring on build 0.0.40-19400. These are diagnostic experiments, not a guaranteed universal fix.

1. Confirm the game ID and edition

  1. Launch RPCS3 and open its game list or compatibility view.
  2. Read the title’s exact game ID and release media entry. The documented stutter report concerns BCES00510.
  3. Check that the installed files are for the PlayStation 3 original. A PS4 dump labelled Remastered is not the same binary and should not be evaluated against the PS3 compatibility record.
  4. Record the edition before changing settings. Compatibility status is tied to the exact game ID and media entry, so a result for one release cannot automatically be transferred to another.

2. Capture a reproducible baseline

Before experimenting, reproduce the symptom on a current official RPCS3 build and write down the details. Include:

  • RPCS3 build number, including whether it is a build at or after 0.0.28-15404.
  • CPU model and core count, with particular attention to whether the machine is a weak six-core system like the one described in the issue.
  • GPU model and selected renderer.
  • The exact game ID and media entry.
  • Whether the RPCS3 window is focused while the stutter or audio fault occurs.
  • Whether the failure is a frame-pacing problem, crackling or cutting-out audio, an emulator crash, or a graphics device-lost error.

Change one variable at a time. Otherwise, an apparent improvement cannot be attributed to a particular setting, and a later crash cannot be traced to the change that caused it.

God of War III Remastered Hits - PlayStation 4

  • 92% PS3 Metacritic Score
  • Stunning graphics thanks to 1080p and 60FPS remastering
  • Photo mode that will allow you to capture, edit and share the most exciting moments of play

3. Test the focus-state clue

The issue report says the stutter disappeared when the RPCS3 window was unfocused. This does not establish a permanent fix; it is a clue that focus and scheduling may affect the regression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the same scene with the RPCS3 window focused.
  2. Repeat it with another window focused, without changing the game, renderer, or resolution.
  3. Note whether both frame pacing and audio change, or only the visible stutter.
  4. Restore normal focus before judging playability. A workaround that depends on leaving the emulator unfocused may be impractical and is not evidence that the underlying regression is resolved.

4. Test SPURS values 2 and 3 separately

The reporter found that changing SPURS to 2 or 3 helped on a weak six-core CPU. Because later comments still observed the issue on build 0.0.40-19400, treat these values as experiments with uncertain scope.

  1. Open the game’s per-title configuration in RPCS3.
  2. Locate the SPURS setting in the advanced CPU or emulation options available in your build.
  3. Record the default value before changing it.
  4. Test SPURS value 2 in a repeatable section of the game and record frame pacing, audio behavior, and CPU load.
  5. Return to the default, then test value 3 under the same conditions.
  6. Keep the value only if it improves the symptom without introducing hangs, missing effects, worse audio, or new crashes. Otherwise restore the default.

Do not present either value as a universal recommendation. The evidence is one issue report and an affected configuration; it does not define a setting that works across every CPU, build, or release.

  • The God of War Collection includes: God of War and God of War II on one Blu-ray Disc for play on the PlayStation 3.
  • Rediscover two of the most highly praised games ever developed for the PS2 in advance of the upcoming release of God of War III on PS3.
  • Remastered in high-definition at a resolution of 720p and including anti-aliased graphics for 60 frames per second gameplay.
  • Full PlayStation Network (PSN) Trophies support for each game.

5. Test process priority as a separate experiment

The same report mentions a process-priority change helping on a weak six-core CPU. Test that independently from SPURS so you can tell which change matters.

  1. Start RPCS3 and reproduce the baseline problem.
  2. Use your operating system’s process-management interface to change RPCS3’s process priority one step at a time.
  3. Retest the same scene with the same renderer and SPURS value.
  4. Stop if the system becomes less responsive, audio worsens, or the emulator crashes.
  5. Return to the normal priority when you finish testing. A priority change is a workaround, not a compatibility guarantee.

When the symptom is audio crackling or cutting out

Audio faults can follow the same frame-pacing regression, but do not assume that every crackle has the same cause. First note whether the sound problem appears only while the window is focused, only during heavy stutter, or independently of video timing. Then compare the default configuration with one SPURS value at a time and with the process-priority experiment, keeping every other variable unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If audio improves only when the window is unfocused, record that as a focus-state workaround rather than a repaired configuration.
  • If audio improves with SPURS 2 or 3 but video becomes less stable, restore the default and keep the more reproducible behavior.
  • If crackling persists in every test, do not claim that an Xbox headset, external audio device, or storage upgrade addresses the emulator regression; no cited evidence demonstrates such a hardware remedy.

When RPCS3 crashes or reports device lost

Return to a clean per-game baseline

A crash or graphics device-lost message is a different failure class from the reported focus-related stutter. Return the title to its default per-game settings before adding undocumented hacks. This removes experimental SPURS, priority, and renderer changes from the diagnosis.

  1. Close the game and RPCS3.
  2. Restore the title’s default per-game configuration.
  3. Reopen RPCS3 and reproduce the crash once using the same game ID and media entry.
  4. Compare the result with the project’s compatibility entry for that exact release.
  5. Only after establishing a clean baseline should you test one documented variable at a time.

RPCS3 classifies games by observed state—Playable, Ingame, Loadable, or Nothing—and the status is specific to the game ID. A different regional release or disc entry can therefore have a different status. Do not turn a compatibility label for one ID into a promise for another.

What not to spend money on

The cited evidence identifies a platform and software boundary, not a failed Xbox accessory. It does not show that a GPU upgrade, external SSD, headset, capture device, or Xbox expansion accessory fixes the PS4-emulation path. Hardware can change performance in a supported PC setup, but it cannot add PS4 emulation to Xbox Series X backward compatibility. Avoid purchases marketed as a guaranteed fix for this specific problem.

A separate Windows option for the PS4 remaster

The gow3_pc project documents an unofficial Windows port of the PS4 remaster. It runs the game’s x86-64 code on a PC and uses Vulkan for graphics. It is not RPCS3, it is not an Xbox application, and it does not make the Series X a PS4 emulator.

Requirements and limits

  • A compatible Windows PC with Vulkan-capable graphics support.
  • A legally obtained PS4 dump identified as CUSA01623, version 1.02.
  • Acceptance that the project is unofficial and that the cited documentation does not establish a universal stutter, audio, or crash fix.

Because this port and RPCS3 target different editions, do not use an RPCS3 game ID, compatibility status, or SPURS workaround to evaluate the Windows port. Keep the PS4 dump and the PS3 release as separate installations and troubleshooting cases.

Decision checklist

  • Xbox Series X only: There is no supported PS4-emulation route to repair; verify whether you actually own a supported Xbox edition.
  • RPCS3 on Windows: You are running the PS3 original. Confirm the exact ID, record the build and hardware, then test focus state, SPURS 2 or 3, and process priority independently.
  • Crash or device lost: Restore default per-game settings and compare the exact ID with RPCS3’s compatibility entry before trying further changes.
  • PS4 remaster on PC: Consider the separate unofficial Windows port only with a compatible Vulkan setup and a legally obtained CUSA01623 v1.02 dump.
  • Any setup: Do not treat an experimental workaround as a guaranteed fix, and do not buy hardware on the assumption that it resolves an unsupported platform path.

Why a universal fix cannot be promised

The documented RPCS3 regression begins with builds 0.0.28-15404 onward, while later comments still report the symptom on 0.0.40-19400. The observed behavior also changes with window focus and, on one weak six-core configuration, with SPURS and process priority. Those details establish a reproducible area for testing, not a single setting that applies to every build, processor, renderer, or game release.

The central diagnosis is therefore edition-specific: Xbox Series X has no supported PS4-emulation path; RPCS3 concerns the PS3 original; and the PS3 stutter report has experimental workarounds with uncertain scope. Keeping those three facts separate prevents a PS3 troubleshooting report from being mistaken for a fix for God of War III Remastered on Xbox.
