What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix the defect you actually have: wispy hairs usually point to oozing, lifted corners to warping or poor adhesion, and visible layer texture may be normal. Gaps, cracks, seams, and sideways shifts are different problems, so identify the pattern before changing settings. “Illusions” does not indicate a special printer defect; the same checks apply to ordinary FDM/FFF prints.
Identify the defect before changing settings
Look at where the flaw appears and what it looks like. A similar-looking surface mark can have a different cause—and require a different fix.

- Fine hairs between separate features or across travel paths: likely stringing or oozing.
- Corners curling upward from the build plate: warping or corner lift.
- Gaps or missing filament in walls or layers: possible under-extrusion.
- Cracks or layers separating: weak interlayer bonding, which can be affected by temperature, cooling, speed, or the print environment.
- A single vertical scar: often the slicer’s perimeter start-and-stop seam, not necessarily a mechanical fault.
- A section displaced sideways: shifted layers, a motion problem rather than ordinary layer texture.
- Repeated, evenly spaced bands: not enough to diagnose on their own. Check extrusion consistency and test prints, then consult guidance for your printer before adjusting hardware.
For any symptom, begin with the stock slicer profile intended for your printer, material, and nozzle. Exact temperatures, retraction values, fan settings, and mechanical checks depend on that combination.
How do I stop stringing on my 3D print?
Stringing is filament left on a model during nozzle travel. Prusa Research identifies high nozzle temperature and incorrect retraction as common causes; damp filament and hotend heat-dissipation or assembly problems can also contribute. Start with the matching machine-and-material profile, and clean residue from the nozzle before judging a test print. See Prusa’s stringing and oozing guidance.

- Check the filament and hotend. If stringing persists, consider whether the filament is damp and whether the hotend is assembled and dissipating heat as intended for your printer.
- Test temperature one change at a time. Prusa suggests trying a nozzle-temperature reduction of 5–10°C and checking the result. This is a test range, not a universal target; stay within the material and printer guidance.
- Tune retraction for your machine. Retraction distance and speed are not transferable values across printers. Prusa’s examples vary by design, and excessive speed can cause skipped motor steps. Flexible filament can require particular care.
- Compare a fresh test print. Keep other settings unchanged while testing each adjustment so you can tell whether it helped.
A heat gun can remove remaining hairs from a finished print, but it does not address the cause. Prusa describes a method using around 200°C for one or two seconds and warns that longer exposure may deform the part. This is an optional finishing method, not a risk-free fix.
Why are the corners of my 3D print lifting?
Warping happens when shrinkage and uneven thermal conditions pull a print away from the bed. It is a greater concern with larger parts and higher-temperature materials such as PC Blend, ASA, and ABS. Bed adhesion matters, but so do drafts, ambient stability, and material-appropriate cooling. Prusa outlines these factors in its warping guidance.

- Prepare the build surface and first layer. Clean the sheet according to its manufacturer’s instructions and confirm first-layer calibration. Surface-care advice varies by sheet and material; do not assume a cleaning method suitable for one surface applies to another.
- Use the correct material profile. If adhesion remains poor, check the material and build-sheet instructions before changing bed temperature or applying an adhesive. Prusa’s older general article suggests trying a 5–10°C bed-temperature increase for materials that adhere poorly, but the material’s limits and the current printer profile take precedence.
- Manage drafts and temperature differences. For materials and parts prone to warping, reducing drafts and keeping the ambient conditions stable may help. An enclosure is appropriate only where the printer and material guidance supports it.
- Try geometry and speed adjustments when appropriate. Prusa suggests options such as slowing the print, using a skirt or draft shield, or adding a brim. These are not substitutes for correct surface preparation and a suitable profile.
- Set cooling for the material and shape. Excessive fan can contribute to lifting or weaker layer bonding, but some materials and geometries need cooling. Avoid a blanket rule to turn the fan off or on.
Adhesion aids are sheet- and material-specific. Prusa identifies a thin glue-stick layer on its steel sheet as one possible aid and separating layer; its first-layer advice specifically recommends a separating agent such as glue stick for PETG. PETG surface preparation differs from general IPA/acetone advice, so follow the instructions for your particular sheet.

Are visible layer lines normal, or is something wrong?
Some layer texture is an inherent result of building an FDM/FFF object in stacked layers. Layer height controls vertical resolution and print time: taller layers print faster but make the steps more visible; smaller layers can improve detail but take longer. A lower layer height is a cosmetic or detail choice, not a cure for missing extrusion or mechanical faults.

PrusaSlicer guidance says layer height should remain below 80% of nozzle diameter and gives about 0.32 mm as a maximum for a 0.4 mm nozzle. Those are slicer guidance values; use the limits for your chosen nozzle and slicer. Prusa’s layer-height article also gives 0.10 mm as an example of a small layer height and advises against going lower in its guidance. See Prusa’s layers and perimeters guidance.
Why are there gaps between the layers?
Gaps or missing material are not simply a cosmetic layer-height issue. They can indicate under-extrusion. Prusa lists several possible causes: first-layer calibration that is too close, slicer settings, the nozzle, extruder gears, hotend cooling, or the filament. Its under-extrusion troubleshooting guide is a useful starting point.

- Check that the selected slicer profile matches the printer, material, and nozzle.
- Inspect the nozzle and extruder for issues using the printer manufacturer’s instructions.
- Recheck first-layer calibration if the print has gaps near the bed; calibrate again after changing a nozzle or moving the printer.
- If the layers crack or separate rather than showing missing filament, review temperature, cooling, speed, and environment for the specific material.
Do not lower layer height to conceal gaps: that does not establish or correct their cause.

| Symptom | First checks | Possible adjustment | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine strings | Material profile, nozzle residue, filament condition, hotend condition | Test a 5–10°C nozzle reduction per Prusa’s guidance; tune machine-specific retraction | Wrong retraction speed can cause skipped motor steps; temperature must suit the material |
| Lifted corners | Sheet cleanliness, first-layer calibration, drafts, ambient stability | Use material-appropriate profile and cooling; consider a brim or other Prusa-suggested measures | Adhesives and surface cleaning are sheet- and material-specific |
| Visible but continuous layer texture | Confirm the texture is not gaps, a seam, or a shift | Use a smaller layer height if finer vertical detail is worth the extra print time | Does not fix extrusion or motion faults |
| Gaps or missing filament | Profile, calibration, nozzle, extruder gears, hotend cooling, filament | Follow machine-specific under-extrusion checks | Changing layer height alone can hide rather than resolve the fault |
| Cracks or separated layers | Material, temperature, cooling, speed, environment | Adjust only against printer and material guidance | Too much cooling can weaken layer-to-layer adhesion |
| Vertical scar or sideways shift | Determine whether it is a perimeter seam or misaligned layers | For a seam, review slicer placement; for a shift, consult machine-specific motion guidance | They are different symptoms and need different checks |
When a general fix is not enough
Without the printer model, filament, nozzle, build sheet, slicer profile, and a view of the defect, an exact retraction distance, temperature, fan percentage, Z offset, or mechanical repair cannot be prescribed reliably. Use manufacturer instructions for your particular setup. If an evenly spaced banding pattern remains after checking extrusion consistency and test prints, the appearance alone does not establish its cause.
