Start with the lowest-risk checks
Use this order because the first steps are reversible and either fix common faults or produce useful evidence. Do not delete save files, switch branches, or edit configuration data until you have made a copy of the complete Stranded Deep folder.

To check your system, press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and review the System and Display tabs. Compare the processor, installed memory, graphics memory, and DirectX information with the table. A machine that only meets the minimum can launch the game yet still struggle with demanding effects; treat the graphics steps below as the next test rather than assuming the installation is damaged.

Update Steam, use the stable branch, and verify files
Install current updates
Allow Steam to finish its own client update, then check the Downloads view for a pending Stranded Deep update. Do not diagnose a crash while an update is paused, queued, or still applying. Restart Steam after an update if the game was open during the installation.
Return to the recommended branch
- Open Steam Library and right-click Stranded Deep.
- Choose Properties, then open Betas.
- Set the branch selector to
None(the recommended stable branch). - Let Steam complete any branch download, then start the game once from the normal Play button.
Branch consistency matters especially when saves are involved. A save created or changed on another branch may revert or behave unexpectedly when you move between branches. Always make the backup described in the save section before changing this selector.
Verify the installed files
- In the game’s Steam Properties, select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Read the completion message, allow Steam to reacquire anything it reports, and launch the game again.
Beam Team’s troubleshooting guidance considers verification particularly important after every game update. It is a safer first response than deleting the installation or changing save data, because it addresses the game files while leaving the separate user-data folder alone.
Reduce graphics load when the game freezes or stutters
Freezing and severe stutter do not always indicate a corrupt save. Beam Team specifically identifies several effects that can be demanding on lower-end systems. Change one group of settings at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

Settings to lower first
- Shadows: lower this before reducing every other option; shadow maps can create sudden frame-time spikes.
- Volumetric Clouds: reduce or disable them when slowdowns are most noticeable outdoors or during weather changes.
- Draw Distances: lower the distance if stutter appears while moving quickly across an island or looking toward a large view.
- Ambient Occlusion: reduce it if frame pacing remains uneven after the larger effects are lowered.
- Antialiasing: lower it last among these listed effects if you need additional headroom.
Test each change safely
- Start the game on the stable
Nonebranch. - Lower Shadows and Volumetric Clouds first, apply the settings, and load the same area where the freeze occurred.
- If the symptom remains, lower Draw Distances, then Ambient Occlusion and Antialiasing.
- Use the same movement or camera view for each test. A repeatable improvement after a particular change is evidence that rendering load, rather than a save-file operation, is contributing to the freeze.
These changes are reversible. Keep a note of the original values so you can restore them after identifying a stable combination. If the game still freezes at low settings, stop repeatedly loading the affected save and proceed to the branch and save-protection checks instead of assuming that lowering every option will repair data.
Fix fullscreen Alt-Tab crashes with DX9
Beam Team documents a specific engine behavior in which DirectX 11 can crash when you Alt-Tab away from a fullscreen game. If that is the trigger, choose the DX9 startup option from Steam’s launch choices and test the same Alt-Tab action again.
- Close Stranded Deep completely.
- Start it from Steam and select the DX9 startup option when the launch dialog appears.
- Load a session or reach the main menu, then test leaving fullscreen with
Alt+Tab. - If DX9 stops the crash, keep using that option for fullscreen play or avoid Alt-Tab in the DX11 mode.
This is a targeted workaround for the fullscreen focus change. It does not establish that DX9 will fix unrelated launch failures, save errors, or freezes caused by graphics load. Use the general verification and graphics procedures for those symptoms.

Bypass a broken launcher
If Steam starts the launcher and the launcher closes or does nothing, run the game executable directly. This bypasses the Stranded_Deep_x64 launcher and can distinguish a launcher problem from a failure inside the game itself.

- In Steam Library, right-click Stranded Deep and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and click Browse.
- In the folder that opens, locate
Stranded_Deep.exe. - Double-click it to start the game without the launcher.
If the direct executable works, use it as a temporary diagnostic path and still verify the files and update Steam. If it also fails, record whether the process closes immediately, shows an error, or reaches a menu before crashing. Include your system specifications when contacting support; the direct-launch workaround does not by itself identify the underlying fault.
Locate and protect Stranded Deep saves

Open File Explorer, click the address bar, paste that path, and press Enter. The folder contains slot directories such as Slot0 and Slot1; later slots can also exist. Treat the entire Stranded Deep folder as the unit to preserve, not just one file whose name looks familiar.

to the LocalLow path above. If you are recovering an older installation or a save made before that migration, check the Documents location as well, but do not assume that files found there are the active set. Copy both locations to separate backup folders before attempting to combine anything.
Make a backup before any risky action
- Exit Stranded Deep and Steam so no file is being written.
- Paste
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowBeam Team GamesStranded Deepinto File Explorer. - Copy the complete Stranded Deep folder to a different location, such as a dated folder on another drive.
- If the current folder is missing, copy the older Documents folder separately rather than renaming or merging it.
- Only after both copies exist should you change branches, remove a suspect file, or test a recovery.
A backup gives you a reversible point to return to if a branch switch changes the visible slots. It also lets support inspect the original state without relying on memory.
Separate saves from options
The options file is documented at:

This distinction helps when a graphics or control setting resets: Options.json is configuration data, while the slot folders hold the save sets. Back up the parent folder before editing or deleting either type of data. Do not replace a missing slot with a file from another slot unless you have preserved the original folders and understand which session each one represents.
Recover after switching branches
Branch changes are a common source of confusion because the game can appear to have lost progress when it is reading a different or incompatible set of data. The safest recovery sequence is conservative:
- Close the game and Steam.
- Back up the entire LocalLow Stranded Deep folder, plus any legacy Documents folder you found.
- Reopen Steam, set Stranded Deep’s branch to
None, and wait for Steam to finish changing the installation. - Launch the stable build and inspect the existing slots without creating a new game over them.
- If the expected slot is still absent, close the game and compare the backup copies of
Slot0,Slot1, and later slot folders. Do not overwrite the active folder while you are still identifying which set belongs to which branch.
Beam Team warns that saves may revert or cause issues when switching branches. There is no evidence-based guarantee that a save from one branch can be converted safely to another. Preserve every original copy and describe the branch history when requesting help.
Collect an output log for repeatable crashes
If updates, verification, a stable branch, graphics reductions, and the targeted launcher or DX9 workaround do not resolve a repeatable crash, provide a fresh log rather than a screenshot alone.

- Reproduce the crash once, if doing so will not risk an unsaved session you still need.
- Immediately browse the local installation files from Steam’s Properties > Installed Files > Browse.
- Open the
Stranded_Deep_Datafolder and locateoutput_log. - Attach the newly created log to an email addressed to
[email protected]. - Use the subject line
Game Crashand describe the exact trigger: launch, fullscreen Alt-Tab, loading a slot, saving, or a particular location. - Include your Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics card and VRAM, DirectX information, whether you used DX9 or DX11, the active branch, and whether direct executable launch changed the result.
Send the log promptly because a later launch can replace useful context. Keep your save backup private and intact; attach it only if support specifically requests it through an appropriate channel.
Use antivirus checks only as a secondary test
Steam’s general client guidance notes that antivirus software can hook deeply into a system and affect disk or network operations. That makes security software a possible contributor to a launch or save-write problem, but it is not the first explanation to test for a Stranded Deep crash.
- Complete Steam and game updates, branch selection, and file verification first.
- Check your security product’s quarantine and event history for a blocked Stranded Deep executable or data write.
- Only if you understand the product’s controls, perform a short, controlled test with the relevant protection rule or exception, then immediately restore normal protection.
- Do not download replacement executables or disable security permanently. Record whether the controlled test changed the symptom and report that detail to support.
A practical decision path
- Crashes before the menu: check requirements, update Steam and the game, select
None, verify files, then tryStranded_Deep.exedirectly. - Crashes only during fullscreen Alt-Tab: use the DX9 startup option and avoid treating this specific workaround as a fix for other symptoms.
- Freezes or heavy stutter during play: lower the five demanding effects, test the same scene, and keep the settings that produce stable frame pacing.
- Save missing or changed after a branch switch: stop writing new progress, back up both possible save locations, return to
None, and compare slot folders. - Any repeatable failure after these steps: capture a fresh
output_log, include system specifications and branch details, and email it with the required subject.
No independent crash-rate statistic establishes how often any one cause occurs, so a symptom-driven test is more reliable than assuming every failure has the same source. Keep each change reversible and make only one risky change at a time.
