If the game starts with a black, stretched, cropped, or otherwise unusable picture, update the video driver and DirectX, then test a windowed or explicit-resolution launch option. These steps address the most common causes without immediately deleting saves or reinstalling the game.
Identify which failure you are seeing
“Won’t launch” can describe several different failures. The distinction determines what to test first.

- Preparing to Launch, then nothing: the process may be crashing immediately, or another program may be blocking Steam or the game.
- The game appears briefly and closes: damaged files, an unsupported system, an outdated driver, or a software conflict is likely.
- A black screen with audio: the game may be running but using an incompatible display mode, resolution, refresh rate, or graphics API.
- A stretched, cropped, or off-center picture: the saved resolution or fullscreen mode may not match the monitor.
- An error mentioning a missing component: update the operating system and the game’s video components before trying more invasive repairs.
Note the exact symptom before changing anything. Also note whether the game process appears in Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS, and whether you hear audio. Those observations make later support much faster.
Use this order of operations
Follow the sequence below rather than changing several variables at once. Testing one change at a time tells you which repair worked and prevents a temporary workaround from hiding the original problem.

- Restart the computer and Steam.
- Install pending operating-system updates and current graphics drivers.
- Compare the computer with the game’s Steam store-page requirements and supported operating systems.
- Verify the installation through Steam’s Installed Files menu.
- Close overlays, capture software, antivirus components, tuning utilities, and other non-essential programs, testing after each change.
- For a picture problem, update DirectX and try one display launch option at a time.
- If the game still fails, collect diagnostic details and contact the developer; use Proton-specific channels for Linux compatibility problems.
Restart and update the platform first
Steam identifies outdated Windows, Linux, or macOS installations as a cause of games failing after “Preparing to Launch.” A restart also clears a process that is still running invisibly, releases a locked file, and reloads the graphics driver.
Windows
- Save work and restart the computer, not just Steam.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install every pending update. Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Install the current driver for the computer’s graphics hardware from the hardware manufacturer’s supported update channel.
- Run the game once before reopening overlays or tuning utilities.
Steam specifically notes that Windows Update includes .NET Framework versions used by some games and AMD Radeon drivers. Do not assume a recently installed game has also installed every operating-system component it needs.
Linux
- Apply the distribution’s pending updates and restart.
- Confirm that the installed graphics stack and driver are current for the distribution.
- Check whether the title has a native Linux build. If it does not, determine whether Steam Play/Proton is the intended route.
macOS
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install available updates.
- Restart, then confirm on the game’s Steam store page that macOS is supported. A Windows-only title will not become compatible simply because it is installed through Steam.
Check requirements and platform support
Open the game’s Steam store page and compare its listed minimum and recommended requirements with the actual computer. Check each category rather than relying on a single “gaming PC” label.

Systems at or below a game’s requirements can experience both launch and performance problems. If the computer clearly falls below the minimum, software troubleshooting cannot make unsupported hardware meet that requirement. Free space is especially easy to overlook after a large update; leave room for Steam to download and unpack replacement files.
Verify the game’s installation in Steam
Verification is the least destructive repair for missing or corrupted content. It can replace damaged executable files, textures, and other installed data without requiring a full reinstall.

- Restart Steam.
- Open Library and locate the puzzle game.
- Right-click the game, or select its gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game before opening other utilities.
The check can take several minutes. Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced; that message does not automatically mean the repair failed. Start the game after verification and see whether the original symptom changed.
Do not run verification while another system-intensive process is active, such as a large download, backup, or disk scan. Steam also advises against verifying multiple games at the same time. Let one check finish so the disk and Steam library are not competing for the same resources.
Isolate software conflicts without weakening security permanently
Overlays, screen-capture tools, antivirus components, hardware-tuning utilities, and other background programs can interfere with Steam or a game’s startup. Close non-essential programs one at a time and test after each change.
Test methodically
- Write down which programs are currently running.
- Close one non-essential overlay or capture tool.
- Launch the game and reproduce the failure.
- If the behavior changes, reopen that program only after recording the result.
- Continue with the next candidate until you identify the conflict.
Common candidates include an in-game overlay, recording or streaming software, a frame-rate limiter, a graphics-card tuning panel, and aggressive antivirus or ransomware-protection rules. The point is isolation, not leaving protection disabled. Restore security software as soon as the test is complete and create an appropriate game exception only through its documented controls.
If closing one utility fixes the game, update that utility or leave its overlay disabled for this title. If no single program changes the result, restore everything and continue with the platform, file, and display checks rather than running an increasingly stripped-down system indefinitely.

Fix a black, stretched, cropped, or wrong-resolution display
When the game process runs but the image is unusable, update the graphics driver and DirectX before changing launch settings. Display options are recovery tools: use them to get a stable picture, then remove temporary options and set the correct mode inside the game.
Try windowed mode first
Exclusive fullscreen can fail when a game’s saved resolution or refresh rate is incompatible with the monitor. In Steam, open the game’s Properties > General page and enter -windowed in Launch Options. For games that recognize the alternate spelling, -sw requests the same type of windowed startup.
Launch the game. If the window appears, open the game’s video settings and choose a resolution supported by the monitor. Apply the setting, quit normally, and remove the launch option before testing fullscreen again.
Force fullscreen after the correct mode is known
Use -fullscreen in the same Launch Options field when you need fullscreen presentation. This is useful after recovering from a bad windowed configuration, but it cannot make an unsupported resolution work. If fullscreen immediately returns the black screen, remove the option and continue in windowed mode while choosing a compatible resolution in the game.
Set an explicit width and height
For a game that opens off-screen, stretches the image, or keeps selecting an unusable mode, specify both dimensions:

-w 1280 -h 720Replace the example dimensions with a resolution the monitor supports. Use one width and one height together; setting only one dimension can leave the game with an unexpected aspect ratio. After the game displays correctly, set the desired resolution in its own menu and remove the launch parameters.
Set a refresh rate only when necessary
If the monitor reports an unsupported refresh mode, add -refresh [rate], replacing [rate] with a supported numeric rate such as the monitor’s standard setting. For example:
-refresh 60Use the value documented by the monitor or operating system. A refresh-rate parameter is not a universal fix for a black screen, so test it only after windowed mode or an explicit resolution has been tried.
Use autoconfiguration for supported Valve or Source games
Steam documents -autoconfig for supported Valve/Source games. It resets recognized video settings to a configuration the engine can use. This option is not a general-purpose switch for every puzzle game; if the title is not based on a supported Valve/Source engine, use the game’s own settings or its developer’s instructions instead.
Keep launch options temporary
Steam passes every entry in the Launch Options field each time the game starts. Once the picture is stable, return to Properties > General > Launch Options, delete the temporary text, and save the field empty. Leaving a forced 1280×720 window or 60 Hz refresh rate in place can make the game appear “fixed” while preventing the normal display menu from working as intended.

Use windowed mode as a diagnostic step, not as proof that the underlying driver or resolution issue is solved. Once the game renders reliably, choose the desired presentation in its video menu and remove the command-line override.
Linux: distinguish native support from Proton
Linux troubleshooting has an additional branch. First confirm whether the Steam store page lists a native Linux version. A native build is the intended platform path. If the title is being run through Steam Play/Proton, the compatibility layer, Proton version, and title-specific behavior become relevant.
- Check the store page for Linux support.
- If using Proton, review the game’s Proton community discussion for the title-specific launch requirements and known workarounds.
- Keep the Linux distribution and graphics stack current.
- Record the Proton version and the exact behavior when seeking help.
When a Proton problem remains after the general Steam checks, Steam directs players to the Proton community and Valve’s Proton issue tracker. A native-Linux failure and a Proton compatibility failure should not be reported as though they were the same problem; include which path you used.
When verification is not enough: verify, then reinstall
Verification is the lower-cost first repair because it checks and replaces damaged installation content. Reinstalling takes longer and requires the game to be downloaded and unpacked again, so reserve it for cases in which verification, updates, and conflict isolation do not resolve the failure.
Before reinstalling
- Confirm that the operating system and graphics driver are current.
- Check that the computer meets the game’s requirements and has sufficient free storage.
- Run verification once with other intensive disk activity stopped.
- Test without non-essential overlays and tuning utilities.
- Record whether saves are synchronized or stored locally, and back up local saves when the game provides a documented save location.
A reinstall cannot correct an unsupported operating system, an incompatible GPU, or a background conflict. It only replaces the installed game content, which is why those checks come first.
Collect useful evidence before contacting support
If the ordered workflow fails, provide evidence instead of only saying “it does not work.” The game developer can act more quickly when the failure is reproducible and the environment is clear.
- The exact error text, copied accurately.
- Whether the process appears briefly in Task Manager or Activity Monitor.
- Whether audio plays while the display is black.
- Operating system and version.
- Graphics-processing-unit model and driver version.
- Whether the game is native Linux or running through Proton, including the Proton version.
- Whether verification replaced files and what message Steam displayed afterward.
- Which launch options were tested and what each one changed.
- Which overlays, capture tools, antivirus components, or tuning utilities were closed.
Steam directs players to the game developer for in-depth support when its general launch steps do not solve the problem. For Proton cases, include the Proton details and use the Proton community or Valve’s Proton issue tracker as appropriate. Restore normal launch options and background applications after testing unless support asks you to keep a specific diagnostic setting.
