Then restart the client, clear its download cache if needed, and test your home or a nearby download region. Match library repairs and file verification to installation errors; investigate your network, security software, other traffic, or storage only if the simpler checks do not help.
1. Check whether the download is actually slow
Steam may display download rates in bytes per second, while internet plans are usually advertised in bits per second. Since one byte contains eight bits, compare like with like: multiply a bytes-per-second figure by eight to express it in bits per second. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s = 6,144 Kb/s = 6 Mbps. This is a unit conversion, not a promised or typical download speed. Steam Support explains the units.

2. Check Steam’s download settings and queue
Before changing network or computer hardware, check for limits and competing downloads in Steam.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and check whether a bandwidth limit is enabled. The units shown depend on whether Steam is set to display rates in bytes or bits.
- Open the Download Manager and review the queue. Another download may be using bandwidth or waiting ahead of the affected game.
- Check download scheduling and update behavior in the same settings area; these can affect when Steam downloads updates.
Steam’s Managing Steam Downloads & Updates guide describes these controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.

- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
3. Restart Steam, then clear the cache if downloads fail
Close and restart Steam; if the issue remains, restart the computer. For a download that fails or a game that will not start, clearing Steam’s download cache is a more targeted next step:
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm.
- Sign back in to Steam and retry the download or launch.
Clearing the cache does not affect installed games, but Steam signs you out and requires another login. See Steam’s Clear download cache instructions.

- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
4. Test your download region
Steam normally selects content servers based on your location, but a regional server can be slow, overloaded, or temporarily unavailable. Changing regions is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed speed boost.

- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Choose the region where you are located. If downloads remain slow or unavailable, try another relatively close region.
- Compare the result, then keep the region that works better for your connection.
A distant region is not automatically faster. Steam lists regional slowdowns, overloaded servers, and hardware failures among possible causes of download trouble. See its guidance on slow downloads and content-server connections and unavailable or busy servers.

5. Use library repair or file verification for installation errors
If a download issue appears during installation or an update, or only one game is affected, try the remedy that matches the symptom.
Repair a Steam library folder
If library permissions may be broken, open Settings > Storage, select the three-dot menu beside the affected library, and choose Repair Folder. Steam includes this as an installation troubleshooting step in its Update & Installation Issues guidance.

- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
Verify one game’s installed files
If the problem is specific to a game and corrupted or missing files are a possibility, open Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. This checks that game’s files rather than changing the download region or repairing every library folder.

If the Steam-specific steps do not resolve the issue, the cause may be elsewhere. Restart your modem and router, and consider whether background downloads or applications that monitor network or disk activity are competing with or interrupting Steam. Firewalls, antivirus software, packet filters, proxies, operating-system or driver issues, and drive errors can also contribute.

Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection as a routine fix. Treat security software as a possible cause to investigate safely; Steam’s advanced troubleshooting guidance discusses network and system checks, including testing another network and checking for drive or memory errors. If those checks require changes you are unsure about, seek qualified technical help. See Steam’s installation troubleshooting and its guidance for slow downloads.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Distinguish a drive bottleneck from a network problem
During a download, Steam may be transferring data over the network or processing and writing files. If the graph shows little network activity while installation work continues, the drive or other disk activity may be relevant; that is a diagnostic clue, not proof that the connection is slow. A full, heavily loaded, or failing drive can also cause installation trouble.
If storage is the likely issue, Steam supports adding another library folder on an alternate drive and moving an installed game between library folders without downloading it again. An external SSD is an option only when additional storage or drive performance is the problem; it will not fix a slow content server or network connection. Steam describes library and installation options in Update & Installation Issues and Managing Steam Downloads & Updates.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuick Recap
How to narrow down the cause
- All downloads seem slow: confirm the units, check Steam’s limit and queue, then compare your current region with another nearby region.
- One game has an installation or update error: repair its library folder if permissions may be the issue, or verify that game’s files if corruption is suspected.
- Steam shows little network activity during installation: check whether disk work, drive capacity, or other disk-heavy applications are involved.
- The problem persists across Steam checks: restart network equipment and investigate background traffic, filtering or security software, drivers, and the storage drive. A test on another network can help narrow the source.
