Its advertised plan prices are starting points, not an estimate of the total bill. Before deciding, compare a written quote—including devices, software, payment channels and contract terms—with another provider’s quote built on the same assumptions.
What Toast’s published prices do—and don’t—tell you
Toast’s 2026 cost guide lists an eligible Starter Kit at $0 per month and its Point of Sale plan at $69 per month. The Starter Kit is described for eligible new, single-location restaurants and includes a one-terminal hardware configuration with no upfront hardware cost. Processing fees and terms still apply. The Point of Sale plan’s final cost can change with hardware choices, additional devices and add-ons; configurations beyond the listed plans receive custom pricing. The official Toast pricing page says advertised pricing applies to new customers and single locations, includes the first hardware terminal subscription, and may charge for subsequent devices. Toast’s terms and conditions apply. Confirm eligibility and the full amount in a written quote rather than treating either advertised figure as an all-in price.
Toast describes itself as a payment facilitator that partners with processors to offer card processing services. Software pricing and processing charges are therefore separate parts of the cost picture; the plan price alone cannot establish what your restaurant will pay.

Does Toast’s hardware fit your restaurant?
Toast says its services may be used only on devices it identifies as compatible and approved, and that it may change which devices are approved. That makes Toast a less straightforward fit for an operator who wants to reuse generic tablets or build a setup around arbitrary hardware. Ask Toast to identify approved model numbers and quote each device required for your service style.
- Counter terminals and any additional terminals
- Handheld ordering or payment devices
- Kitchen display screens
- Printers and other required peripherals
Toast advertises Toast Care as included with every software subscription, available 24/7/365 by phone or web messaging. That establishes the advertised support channels and availability, not independently measured response times or support quality. Toast’s pricing page describes the offer.

How payment processing affects the real cost
Toast says it builds a custom rate around a restaurant’s characteristics. Its payment-fees page distinguishes card-present transactions—such as in-person swipe, chip or contactless payments—from card-not-present transactions, where the cardholder is absent or card details are keyed. Online orders, third-party delivery, phone orders and online invoices are examples of the latter. Toast says card-not-present processing costs more because of higher fraud risk, so ask for separate assumptions for each significant payment channel rather than applying an in-person rate to all sales. Toast explains that interchange is set by card networks and paid to the issuing bank; it usually consists of a percentage plus a per-transaction amount, and varies by card type and transaction method. A quoted rate needs to be assessed against your own card mix and transaction count.

For scale—not as a promised rate—Toast Support’s Interchange Plus illustration calculates a hypothetical $10 sale this way: interchange of 1.80% + $0.20 equals $0.38; network fees of 0.20% equal $0.02; and Toast’s markup of 0.50% + $0.10 equals $0.15, for a stated total of $0.55. This is an example using Toast’s stated assumptions, not a universal offer or a prediction of your effective rate. Toast Support’s Interchange Plus explanation provides the calculation.
Toast Dual Pricing: eligibility and important caveats
According to Toast Support’s FAQ, last updated September 25, 2026, Dual Pricing is available only to eligible new US customers when they sign up; it is not yet available to existing Toast customers. In the described setup, guests see a card total and a discounted cash total. Toast’s default cash discount is 4%, and it recommends raising listed menu prices by 4% where processing costs have not already been incorporated. That percentage is Toast’s product recommendation, not an independent estimate of every restaurant’s processing cost.

Toast says Dual Pricing does not remove the merchant’s contractual processing fees on card sales. It also says merchants must display the standard card price and clearly disclose the cash discount, while remaining responsible for additional legal requirements in their jurisdiction. How to compare a Toast quote with another POS provider
Compare expected costs over the same contract period and give each provider the same operating assumptions. Toast’s cost guide recommends comparing like-for-like hardware, features, transaction assumptions and time period. Include costs that may not appear in the monthly software price:

- Transaction volume, transaction count, card mix and the split between card-present and card-not-present sales
- Setup, installation, networking, migration and training
- Support, replacement devices and likely expansion
Request the merchant agreement and order details in writing before signing. Check software fees, processing-rate structure, device charges, minimums, contract term, renewal, cancellation, hardware ownership or financing, and what happens if subscription fees or processing rates change. Public pricing pages do not establish the term or exit cost for your particular account, so rely on the actual agreement rather than assuming a universal contract length or cancellation fee.
