Do not pick a version at random: quit the game, wait for any pending sync, copy the local save folder somewhere safe, then compare the modification times and the device on which each version was created. Keep the newest trustworthy save, verify it opens with the expected progress, and preserve every other copy until you are certain the recovery worked.
What a Steam Cloud sync conflict means
Steam Cloud synchronizes supported game files before and after play sessions. When a changed file is uploaded after you exit, Steam can later restore it on another device. A conflict appears when Steam sees that the local files and the cloud files are different and cannot safely decide which state should win.

The conflict window normally identifies a Cloud Save and a Local Save, along with modification times. The choice is not merely a display preference: the version you keep is synchronized to the device and cloud, while the version you reject can be overwritten. Valve’s 2024 guidance is explicit: “Please do not choose to overwrite your save!” Instead, check the timestamps and select the most recent trustworthy version.

Do this before selecting Local or Cloud
- Stop launching the game. Exit normally and wait for Steam to finish any pending synchronization. Starting the game repeatedly can create new files, change timestamps, or upload an unwanted state.
- Preserve the local files. Find the game’s save folder and copy it to a separate location before changing sync settings or choosing a conflict option. A USB flash drive is an optional destination, but any separate storage location works. Keep the original folder untouched.
- Record the evidence. Note the conflict dialog’s Local Save and Cloud Save times, which device was used most recently, and whether either copy has already been backed up.
- Inspect the game’s support instructions. Save names and folders are configured by each game. The operating-system families below help you search, but the game’s own documentation determines the exact folder and filenames.
“Please proceed with caution and backup your local saves on your current computer – if the save that you wish to keep is mistakenly overwritten, it is unlikely that you will be able to restore it unless you manually back it up ahead of time.” — Jimmy, Steam Support Tech, ValveSoftware issue tracker, 2015
How to fix a Steam Cloud sync conflict
1. Compare the modification times
Read the timestamps shown for both candidates. A save made on the computer where you played most recently is often the intended one, but do not assume that location alone proves it. Compare the times with your actual play history. If you played on a desktop last night and a laptop this morning, the laptop’s file may be newer even if it contains less progress because you started a fresh session.
Steamworks describes conflicts as automatically detected. The conflict screen is therefore a warning that two file states exist, not an instruction that either state is safe to discard.
2. Choose the newest trustworthy copy
- Prefer the candidate with the latest timestamp that matches the session in which you made the progress you want.
- Prefer a file you have independently copied or otherwise preserved over an unverified candidate.
- If one version has already been opened successfully in-game and shows the expected progress, treat that as stronger evidence than the timestamp alone.
- Do not choose an older cloud copy simply because it is labeled “Cloud.” An older cloud state can overwrite newer local progress.
After you select a version, Steam synchronizes that state to the current device and cloud. Keep the backup of the other candidate until you have launched the game, checked the relevant saves, and confirmed that the progress is correct.

3. Verify after synchronization
Wait for Steam to report that synchronization has completed. Launch the game once, inspect the save slots or profile, and confirm the expected chapter, character, inventory, settings, or other progress. Do not begin a new session until this check is complete; a new session can create another state and make the recovery harder to evaluate.
How to recover a missing Steam save
If the game opens with no progress
- Close the game immediately. Do not create a new profile or play far enough to generate new saves.
- Inspect the game’s local save folder and make a complete copy of everything still present.
- Compare the files and timestamps with the backup you made before changing Steam settings. Keep every candidate, including files that look old or have unfamiliar names.
- If a usable local copy contains the missing progress, temporarily disable Steam Cloud for that game from the game’s Steam client Properties page. This prevents the empty or incorrect cloud state from replacing the files while you restore them.
- Copy the backed-up files into the exact folder expected by the game. Do not guess filenames; use the game’s support documentation to identify the correct location and file set.
- Re-enable Steam Cloud. When Steam presents the next conflict, choose the restored local copy, then wait for synchronization to finish.
- Launch the game once and verify the recovered progress before normal play resumes.
Never delete the only remaining copy while experimenting. If a restore attempt fails, close the game, preserve the resulting folder as another snapshot, and return to the untouched backup.
If only the cloud copy appears usable
Allow Steam to download the cloud version, then launch the game once and check the expected progress. If the missing campaign, profile, or settings are present, close the game normally and let Steam complete its upload. Keep your local backup until you have verified the downloaded state on the device where you need it.

Where Steam games usually store local saves
There is no universal Steam save directory. Steamworks identifies common platform path families, but each game chooses its own subfolder, filename, and format.
| Operating system | Common save-location families | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Documents; AppData\Local; AppData\LocalLow; AppData\Roaming; Saved Games |
Check the game’s support documentation for the exact title-specific folder and filenames. |
| macOS | Home; Library/Application Support; Documents |
Search the game’s documented application-support or Documents subfolder, then copy the complete save set. |
| Linux | Home; XDG data locations | Use the game’s Linux instructions to identify the exact directory and preserve all related files. |
Some games use more than one file for a profile, autosave, settings, or cloud metadata. Copy the entire game-specific folder rather than selecting a single file unless the game’s documentation explicitly identifies a single-file save.
Local Save or Cloud Save: which should you choose?
Use the following decision framework when the dialog offers both choices. It is safer than treating “cloud” as automatically newer or “local” as automatically more current.
| Question | Evidence that favors the Local Save | Evidence that favors the Cloud Save |
|---|---|---|
| Which timestamp is newer? | The local timestamp is later and matches the session where the desired progress was made. | The cloud timestamp is later and matches the session where the desired progress was made. |
| Where was the progress created? | You most recently played on this computer and remember saving the missing progress here. | You most recently played on another device and that session completed normally. |
| Does it open correctly? | The local copy has already been tested or its contents match the expected profile. | The downloaded cloud copy opens and shows the expected campaign or profile. |
| Is there an independent backup? | You copied the local folder before resolving the conflict. | You have preserved the local candidate even while selecting the cloud state. |
If the evidence is inconclusive, do not resolve the conflict by guessing. Preserve the local folder, take screenshots of the dialog, and ask Steam Support for guidance before allowing one state to overwrite the other.

Why repeatedly choosing a version can make recovery worse
Steam synchronizes files around game sessions. A launch can read the currently selected state, create new files, and upload changes when you exit. Repeated launches therefore alter both the evidence and the possible recovery paths. They can replace a useful timestamp with a newer empty save, trigger another conflict, or cause the wrong state to propagate to another device.
The safest sequence is one controlled attempt: stop writes, copy the local folder, decide from timestamps and play history, synchronize, and verify. If verification fails, stop again and work from the preserved copies rather than continuing to play.

Capture the exact failure
Write down the game name, the operating system, the exact error text, and the timestamps shown in the conflict dialog. Take screenshots of the dialog and retain any logs Steam Support requests. If the game has an AppID available in its Steam details, include that too.

Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance covers common synchronization problems and provides a support-ticket path. Include the evidence set and explain exactly which version you selected, whether the game opened afterward, and whether the missing progress exists in any remaining file. Support cannot reconstruct data that was never uploaded, but complete timestamps, files, screenshots, and logs give it the information needed to diagnose a persistent sync error without further overwriting your saves.

Steam Cloud’s scale and its practical limit
Valve reported in 2025 that half of all Steam users had played a game on more than one device during the preceding year. The same presentation said Steam Cloud stored about 40 petabytes and roughly 40 billion files across data centers in 31 countries. Those figures explain why Cloud is useful for moving supported saves between devices, but scale does not make it a version-control system for every file or a substitute for a personal backup.
Cloud synchronization only knows about files the game has configured for Cloud and only retains a state that was successfully uploaded. If a crash, offline session, configuration problem, or game-specific limitation prevented the desired save from uploading, Steam cannot recreate it later. A separate copy made before troubleshooting remains the most reliable protection against an accidental overwrite.
Preventing the next conflict
- Exit games normally and wait for Steam’s synchronization indicator to finish before shutting down or moving to another device.
- When switching computers, allow the previous session to complete its upload before launching the game elsewhere.
- For games with valuable long-term progress, periodically copy the documented local save folder to separate storage.
- Keep old backups until you have verified that a new device shows the correct profile and that Steam has completed its upload.
- If a conflict appears, follow the timestamp-and-backup workflow instead of selecting a version reflexively.
The safest final decision
Choose Local or Cloud only after you have preserved the local folder and compared timestamps with your actual play history. Keep the newest trustworthy state, verify it in-game, and retain the rejected candidate until verification succeeds. If the desired progress is absent from both copies or synchronization continues to fail, stop writing to the game and escalate to Steam Support with the files and evidence intact.
