Identify which side is failing before changing settings: check the server’s Steam connection status, compare local and remote connections, and note whether the message points to EAC. Then work through the matching repair steps below.

What “Steam Auth Failed” means
Steam authentication is not a single check performed in one place. The dedicated server has to establish its own connection to Steam, while a connecting player also has to pass authentication checks. Network access and server discovery can create symptoms that look like authentication failures even when the underlying issue is different.

Facepunch.Steamworks documents several server callbacks that help distinguish these cases. OnSteamNetAuthenticationStatus runs while the server is authenticating. OnSteamServersConnected indicates that the server is logged on and has a working connection to the Steam master server. OnValidateAuthTicketResponse reports whether a user’s authentication ticket was accepted or rejected. Look for equivalent status information in your server logs if you do not have access to the callbacks directly.
A community-reported message such as Rejecting connection - Steam Auth Error: NetworkIdentityFailure is a clue, but it does not by itself establish whether the server, client, or network is at fault. Use the checkpoints below to locate the failure domain rather than treating every instance as a server configuration problem.

First, locate the failure
Before changing anything, record the exact error, whether it appears in the client or server log, and whether the affected player is connecting from the server’s machine or from another networked device. These distinctions determine which checks are useful. Also note whether every player is affected or only one Steam account. A server-wide failure points toward the running server, Steam logon, or network path; a single-account failure is more consistent with that player’s Steam, Rust, EAC, or security-software state.
| What you observe | Most relevant area to check |
|---|---|
| The server never reaches a connected or logged-on Steam state, or repeatedly reports connection failures. | Server Steam connectivity, server files, startup configuration, or host firewall. |
| The server is logged on, but one player cannot join and the client or log points to EAC. | That player’s Rust, Steam, EAC, antivirus, or forbidden-application state. |
| The server is running, but it is missing from the browser or remote players cannot reach it. | Branch, firewall, VPN, addressing, forwarded ports, or browser discovery. |
| A client on the server’s own machine can connect, but remote players cannot. | Reachable server address and game/query port forwarding, rather than local authentication alone. |
Direct connect IP:Port works, but the server-browser listing does not. |
Steam browser polling, branch selection, VPN, or the browser-ping setting. |
These are diagnostic priorities, not guarantees: more than one issue can coexist. For example, a server can be logged on to Steam but still have an address or port problem that prevents remote players from connecting. Conversely, a server can be perfectly reachable while a damaged client installation fails EAC authentication.
1. Update and validate the dedicated-server files
Start with the server build when the server-side Steam status is unhealthy, or when you are unsure whether its files match the intended Rust branch. Facepunch’s server setup guidance uses SteamCMD, anonymous login, and Rust app ID 258550. From the SteamCMD directory, the documented Linux-style command is:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ../rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit
The +login anonymous step matters: omitting login can produce ERROR! Failed to install app '258550' (No subscription). Let SteamCMD complete the update and validation, then start the server using the script and installation directory you intended. Do not assume that a successful command updated the server you actually launch if your startup script points somewhere else.
Check the branch and startup arguments
- Confirm whether the server is meant to run the
publicorstagingbranch, and make sure the installed build and launch configuration agree. For ordinary connection troubleshooting, Facepunch support recommends testing on the regular Rust branch rather than Staging. - Review the startup script for the
RustDedicatedexecutable and deliberate values forserver.port,server.queryport, and the server identity. A mismatch between the ports in the script and those opened or forwarded on the network can make a correctly running server unreachable. - Confirm that the update directory and the launch directory are the same. It is easy to validate one Rust installation while a service, panel, or shell script starts another copy.
- After updating, watch the server’s startup output for a Steam-connected or logged-on state. A validated install is a useful repair, but the connected state is the stronger checkpoint that the running server reached Steam.
Examples in Facepunch’s setup material include ports 28015 and 28016. Treat them as examples, not universal values: the port settings in the actual startup script are the values to check and expose. Record the chosen values in one place before editing a firewall or router rule; otherwise it is easy to fix the wrong port.
2. Confirm that the server is logged on to Steam
Check the server log after startup rather than inferring Steam connectivity from the fact that the process is running. The key state is the server-connected/logged-on status represented by OnSteamServersConnected or equivalent log output. Facepunch describes that state as a working connection to the Steam master server. A process that is listening locally but never reaches this state has not completed the server-side Steam checkpoint.
If the server never reaches that state
- Complete the SteamCMD update and validation above, including anonymous login.
- Verify that the launch script starts the updated
RustDedicatedinstallation and uses the intended branch and server settings. - Check outbound connectivity and the host firewall. A server that cannot establish its Steam connection needs a server-side network or build investigation before you change player permissions.
- Check for repeated connection-failure messages over a restart, rather than treating one transient line as conclusive. The important result is whether the server eventually reaches the connected/logged-on checkpoint.
- Restart the server and check whether it now reaches the connected/logged-on state. If it continues to report connection failures, keep investigating the server’s connectivity and build rather than moving directly to client-side EAC repairs.
If the server is logged on but a player is rejected
Use the player’s client message and the server’s authentication response to narrow the issue. OnValidateAuthTicketResponse is the server-side signal for whether a user was authenticated or rejected. If the server is connected but the rejection is specific to one client, follow the Steam/Rust client steps and, when indicated, the EAC steps below. Avoid changing server IP or port settings solely because one player’s authentication ticket is rejected.
If all players are rejected despite a logged-on status, compare a local connection with a remote one and test direct IP connection. That comparison separates a ticket or client problem from a discovery, bind, firewall, or forwarding problem. Keep the server identity and port values unchanged while testing so each result remains meaningful.
3. Repair the player’s Steam and Rust state
When the server is connected to Steam and the failure follows a particular player, begin with the player’s Steam and Rust installation. Facepunch’s client guidance gives these actions in order:
- Restart Steam and Rust.
- Check for Steam client updates and install any available update.
- Opt out of Steam betas.
- Verify Rust’s files through Steam.
- If the startup or connection problem persists, perform a fresh Rust installation.
Retest after each relevant repair so you can tell which change affected the result. A server-side update will not repair a damaged client installation, and reinstalling Rust on a player’s computer does not resolve a server that never logged on to Steam. The player should also make sure the game is launched from the Steam library during testing, especially when EAC is involved.
Branch selection is part of this comparison. A client on Staging and a server on the regular branch are not a controlled test. Return both sides to the intended branch, and use the regular Rust branch for ordinary troubleshooting unless the server is deliberately a Staging server.

4. Repair EAC when the error points to EAC
Use this sequence when the client message or logs specifically identify Easy Anti-Cheat. Facepunch Support explains that an EAC authentication error means EAC was unable to authenticate the connection. That is a different checkpoint from the dedicated server’s Steam master-server connection, so establish the server’s status separately.
- Launch Rust from the Steam library rather than using a separate shortcut.
- Allow up to 10 minutes for the EAC cache to refresh.
- Verify Rust’s files in Steam.
- Open the Rust EasyAntiCheat folder and run
EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe repair. - Restart the PC and router.
- Check for Windows updates and review whether antivirus software is interfering.
- If it exists, delete
RustClient.exe.eac. - Inspect
output_log.txtfor forbidden applications that may be preventing authentication.
The cache wait and file verification are part of the repair sequence; do not assume EAC has refreshed immediately after launching the game. If antivirus or another security tool is suspected, check its events and exclusions rather than disabling protection indefinitely. The goal is to identify interference during a controlled test.
If these steps do not change the outcome, compare the exact client and server messages again to make sure the remaining failure is still EAC-related rather than a reachability or server-logon issue. A player who can join another Rust server but not this one should be tested against the server’s address and ports; a player who cannot authenticate anywhere should continue with the local Steam, Rust, and EAC checks.

5. Separate server discovery from connection and authentication
A server not appearing in the browser is not the same as a player failing authentication after reaching it. Test discovery and connection separately. Facepunch support says Rust uses the Steam master server for server collection and recommends setting Steam’s Server browser pings / minute to a minimum of 5000.
Try a controlled network test
- Temporarily disable a VPN while testing, then check firewall and antivirus settings if discovery or connection changes.
- Confirm that the client is using the regular Rust branch rather than Staging when testing a server on the regular branch.
- Set Steam’s Server browser pings / minute to at least
5000if the browser is unreliable. This is a polling threshold, not a guarantee that a blocked server will appear. - If the server is absent from the browser, use Rust’s direct connection command to bypass browser discovery: press F1 in Rust and enter
connect IP:Port, substituting the server’s reachable IP address and configured game port.
If direct connection works while the browser listing does not, focus on discovery and browser settings rather than treating the listing failure as proof that Steam authentication is broken. If direct connection also fails for remote players, check the address, firewall, and port-forwarding configuration. Test from a genuinely separate network when possible; a local machine may take a different route and can conceal a public-address problem.
6. Check the server address and ports
The address a client uses depends on where that client is located. Facepunch’s server guide distinguishes a local connection from one made over a network: localhost or 127.0.0.1 is appropriate when the client and server share a machine. A remote player needs the server’s reachable IP address and the relevant ports must be forwarded correctly.
Validate the bind address and forwarding
- The default server bind is
0.0.0.0. This is different from advertisinglocalhostto remote players; localhost only refers to the player’s own machine. - Check whether
+server.ipis set. Binding to a LAN address can restrict where the server listens, so make sure that address is appropriate for the intended clients. - Compare the game and query ports in the startup script with the ports configured in the firewall and router. Forward the server’s configured game/query ports for remote access rather than assuming the example values
28015/28016apply to every setup. - Check both host-firewall rules and router forwarding. Opening a router port does not override a host rule, and a host rule cannot make an incorrect public forwarding target work.
- Test from the server machine and from a remote network separately. A local success does not establish that the public address or port forwarding is correct.
Do not change the server’s bind address or ports at random. First identify the exact configured values, then check whether they match the path the client is using and the ports allowed by the host and network. Changing several values at once makes it impossible to tell whether the original authentication symptom was actually a reachability failure.

Addressing also explains why a browser result can be misleading. A listing may show a server while a client is unable to use the advertised address, or the listing may be delayed while a direct connection succeeds. Treat the direct connect test, local-versus-remote comparison, and server log status as separate observations.
7. Escalate only after the relevant checks
If SteamCMD updates and validation, startup settings, server connectivity, client repairs, and address/port checks have not resolved the issue, identify what remains difficult to operate. A managed Rust server host may be an operational alternative when maintaining the server build, ports, and uptime is the underlying problem. Managed hosting is not itself a Steam-authentication repair and will not automatically correct a player’s local EAC state.
Before choosing a provider, verify its current Rust build, RCON support, port handling, and refund and service-level terms. Ask how updates and validation are performed, which game and query ports are assigned, and whether you can use the server identity and branch you require. Those details affect whether it can run the server configuration you need; they do not establish that a player’s local Steam or EAC state will authenticate successfully.
Self-hosting gives you direct control of SteamCMD, the startup script, bind address, ports, and update timing, but you must maintain those items and keep the host reachable. Managed hosting trades some control for operational assistance and an ongoing fee. Choose it when maintenance, uptime, and port administration are the real constraint, not as a shortcut around identifying the failing authentication checkpoint.

Common pitfalls to avoid
- Updating the wrong installation: SteamCMD may validate one directory while a service launches another. Match
+force_install_dirto the directory used byRustDedicated. - Changing permissions before checking logon: Player permissions cannot repair a server that never connected to the Steam master server.
- Confusing EAC with Steam server logon: EAC repair belongs on the client path when the message or log identifies EAC; it is not a substitute for checking
OnSteamServersConnected. - Using localhost remotely:
127.0.0.1points to the connecting player’s own computer, not the server across the internet. - Assuming example ports are mandatory:
28015and28016are examples. Use the ports explicitly configured by the running server. - Testing only through the browser: A direct F1 connection can show whether the browser is the failing layer.
- Mixing branches during a test: Keep the server and client on the intended public or staging branch, and use public for normal troubleshooting unless staging is intentional.
Fast decision checklist
- Read the exact client and server messages and decide whether the symptom is server-wide or account-specific.
- Confirm the running server reaches the Steam-connected/logged-on state.
- If it does not, validate app
258550with anonymous SteamCMD login, then check the launch directory, branch, outbound connectivity, and host firewall. - If it does, repair the affected player’s Steam/Rust state and follow the EAC sequence only when EAC is named.
- Compare a local connection, a remote connection, browser discovery, and direct
connect IP:Portseparately. - Verify
server.port,server.queryport,+server.ip, firewall rules, and router forwarding against the actual startup script. - Consider managed hosting only when maintaining builds, ports, or uptime—not as a replacement for client or EAC repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “Steam Auth Failed” mean on a Rust dedicated server?
It can indicate that the dedicated server has not logged on to Steam, that a player’s Steam authentication ticket was rejected, that EAC could not authenticate the client, or that network and discovery problems prevented a normal connection. Check the server’s connected/logged-on status and the exact client or server message first.
Which SteamCMD command updates and validates a Rust server?
Use ./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ../rust +login anonymous +app_update 258550 validate +quit, adjusting the installation path to your setup. Rust uses app ID 258550. Omitting +login anonymous can produce a “No subscription” installation error.
How can I tell whether the server itself is authenticated?
Look for OnSteamServersConnected or equivalent log output. This state means the server is logged on and has a working connection to the Steam master server. OnSteamNetAuthenticationStatus runs during authentication, while OnValidateAuthTicketResponse reports whether a user was accepted or rejected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I do if the error specifically mentions Easy Anti-Cheat?
Launch Rust from Steam, allow up to 10 minutes for the EAC cache to refresh, verify Rust files, run EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe repair in the Rust EasyAntiCheat folder, restart the PC and router, check Windows updates and antivirus, delete RustClient.exe.eac if present, and inspect output_log.txt for forbidden applications.
Why does my server work locally but not for remote players?
Local success does not prove that the public address or forwarding is correct. Remote players need the server’s reachable IP address and correctly forwarded game and query ports. Check the actual server.port, server.queryport, bind address, host firewall, and router rules.
What can I try if the Rust server is missing from the browser?
Temporarily disable a VPN, check firewall and antivirus, use the regular branch rather than Staging for a normal server, and set Steam’s “Server browser pings / minute” to at least 5000. Then press F1 in Rust and test connect IP:Port directly.
Should I use localhost or 127.0.0.1 for a remote Rust player?
No. localhost and 127.0.0.1 are appropriate when the client and server share one machine. A remote player must use the server’s reachable network address.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are ports 28015 and 28016 required?
No. They are example ports from server setup material. Use the game and query ports configured in your startup script, then make the firewall and router rules match those values.
When is managed hosting worth considering?
Consider it when maintaining SteamCMD updates, startup settings, ports, and uptime is the persistent operational problem. Compare the host’s current Rust build, RCON support, port handling, refund terms, and service-level terms. Hosting does not fix a player’s local Steam or EAC authentication state.
The Bottom Line
Start with the running server’s Steam-connected/logged-on status. If that checkpoint fails, validate Rust app 258550 with anonymous SteamCMD login and inspect the launch path, branch, outbound connectivity, and firewall. If the server is logged on, repair the affected player’s Steam, Rust, and—when identified—EAC state. Finally, separate browser discovery from direct connection and verify the actual bind address, game/query ports, firewall, and forwarding. Managed hosting is an operational fallback, not a substitute for finding which authentication layer failed.
