For most new VPS deployments in 2026, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the better default. It offers standard security maintenance through 31 May 2029, a longer runway than CentOS Stream 9, whose listed end of life is 31 May 2027. Choose CentOS Stream 9 when your team specifically needs the RHEL-family RPM/DNF and SELinux ecosystem or wants to test software before it enters a RHEL release. The choice is primarily about lifecycle and operational compatibility, not a guaranteed performance difference.
The short answer
A VPS is easier to operate when its operating system matches your team’s tools, package knowledge, automation and support plan. If you are starting from a blank server, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS gives you the more durable production baseline in 2026. Ubuntu’s standard security maintenance runs until 31 May 2029, and Canonical lists optional Ubuntu Pro coverage through May 2034, with Legacy coverage through May 2039.

CentOS Stream 9 remains a legitimate choice, but it is specialized. It follows the public development stream associated with RHEL rather than being a frozen rebuild of a released RHEL version. The CentOS Project lists 31 May 2027 as its expected end of life, so a VPS created in 2026 needs a replacement or migration plan before that date.

CentOS Linux and CentOS Stream are not the same product
Many older comparisons use “CentOS” as if it still meant the former CentOS Linux rebuild. That assumption is the source of much confusion. The CentOS Project states: “We will not be producing a CentOS Linux 9, as a rebuild of RHEL 9. Instead CentOS Stream 9 fulfills this role.”
What CentOS Stream 9 represents
CentOS Stream 9 is the current CentOS successor to CentOS Linux 9. It is positioned in the RHEL development flow, ahead of the corresponding RHEL release. In practical terms, it is intended for organizations that want visibility into changes before they arrive in RHEL, or that already operate software built around the RHEL family.
Why the distinction changes a VPS decision
A traditional rebuild model encourages the expectation that packages track an already released enterprise distribution with minimal change. Stream is different: its purpose is to expose the work that is moving toward RHEL. That can be valuable for validation, but it means your change-management process must allow for a moving stream rather than treating the server as an unchanging clone of a released RHEL system.

Why Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the default for a new 2026 VPS
Longer standard runway
The clearest objective advantage is timing. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is security maintained for five years, until 31 May 2029. A new server deployed during 2026 therefore has a defined standard-maintenance period that extends beyond the next two years. CentOS Stream 9’s listed 31 May 2027 EOL is close enough that a new production installation should include a funded migration, replacement or upgrade project from the start.
Predictable LTS baseline
The LTS label gives teams a stable baseline for long-lived application servers, web servers, container hosts and development environments. “Stable” does not mean that packages never change; it means the release is maintained as a long-term support line rather than chosen primarily as a preview of the next RHEL changes.

Broad general-purpose fit
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is a sensible starting point for a general-purpose VPS when no existing operating-system standard dictates otherwise. Typical examples include a web server, an application API, a Docker or other container host, a CI or development box, and a small business service whose operators want extensive cloud documentation and a clearly dated LTS baseline.
Extended options when five years is not enough
Canonical’s current lifecycle table lists Ubuntu Pro expanded security maintenance for 24.04 LTS through May 2034 and Legacy coverage through May 2039. Those are optional service tiers, not part of the standard five-year term. Evaluate their price, eligibility and operational value before treating either date as your guaranteed plan.
When CentOS Stream 9 is the better fit
Your tooling is already RHEL-oriented
CentOS Stream can reduce migration work when your organization already relies on RPM packages, DNF workflows, SELinux policies, RHEL-family repositories, configuration management, monitoring integrations or internal procedures written for that ecosystem. Reusing tested automation may be safer than changing the operating-system family merely because another distribution has a longer lifecycle.
You need to validate upcoming RHEL behavior
Stream’s position ahead of RHEL can be useful for a test environment, compatibility lab or controlled service where the team deliberately validates changes before they enter a RHEL release. This is a different goal from selecting the most conservative long-term baseline for an internet-facing production VPS.
You accept the 2027 boundary
Choosing Stream in 2026 should trigger a written lifecycle plan. Inventory the workloads, identify the target replacement, test data and rollback procedures, and assign an owner and budget before 31 May 2027. A plan that begins only when the EOL date arrives leaves little time for provider-image changes, application testing or maintenance windows.

Package management and administration differences
The distributions can run the same broad categories of services, but they do not use the same operational vocabulary. Ubuntu follows Debian-family conventions and APT-based package management. CentOS Stream follows the RHEL family, using RPM/DNF conventions and SELinux as a central security technology.

Inventory what changes during a migration
- Package names and availability: The same application may have a different package name, split packages, or a different repository source.
- Repository definitions: Repository files, signing keys, enablement rules and vendor support statements must be recreated for the target distribution.
- Service configuration: Defaults, file locations, service units and firewall integration can differ even when the daemon has the same name.
- Security policy: SELinux policies and enforcement behavior require explicit review when moving away from a RHEL-family system; moving toward Stream requires verifying that existing policies still load and permit the application.
- Automation: Installation tasks, package modules, conditionals, handlers, templates and image-building scripts need distribution-specific testing rather than a simple string replacement.
- Operational documentation: Update runbooks, incident procedures and onboarding material so the next operator does not apply instructions for the wrong family.
Migration guidance identifies release cadence, licensing model, package management, service configuration and security posture as decision points. Treat those as a checklist for a real workload, not as abstract differences between logos.
Security updates: what the published policies do and do not prove
Ubuntu’s maintenance model
Ubuntu states that its security team backports fixes to supported LTS releases. That model lets an organization remain on the 24.04 LTS base while receiving security maintenance through the stated standard endpoint. Ubuntu Pro adds the longer coverage options listed by Canonical, subject to the service’s terms.
CentOS Stream’s update timing
The CentOS FAQ explains that security issues are updated in CentOS Stream after they are solved in the current RHEL release and notes that there is no service-level agreement for the timing. This is an important qualification for teams that require a contractual or explicitly timed response.
How to interpret the comparison
Neither description establishes that one distribution is always faster, safer or better managed. Security depends on applying updates, restricting exposure, configuring access controls, reviewing logs, protecting credentials and maintaining the application as well as the operating system. Select the update channel whose timing and governance match your risk requirements.
Performance: do not choose by distribution branding
No authoritative controlled CentOS-versus-Ubuntu VPS benchmark is established for this comparison. A distribution can appear faster on one provider and slower on another because the virtual CPU model, storage, noisy-neighbor behavior, kernel configuration, network path, filesystem, database settings and workload are different.
A practical benchmark plan
- Choose the exact provider region, VPS size, storage tier and network plan you would purchase.
- Build equivalent test images with the same application version, data set, runtime settings and resource limits.
- Measure the operation that matters: requests per second, tail latency, job completion time, database transactions, build duration or sustained transfer.
- Repeat tests at representative concurrency and during the expected peak window; record CPU, memory, disk and network saturation.
- Run a failure or restart test so you compare recovery behavior, not only a best-case speed result.
- Keep the faster result only if its maintenance model, compatibility and lifecycle are acceptable for the service.
If you cannot run this test, select the distribution based on support horizon and operational fit instead of an assumed benchmark winner.

Provider image availability and deployment checks
Image catalogs vary by VPS provider, region and product generation. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and CentOS Stream 9 should be treated as separate image choices whose availability must be confirmed at the time of purchase. A provider may offer one as a first-party image, a custom template or not at all in a particular region.
For a Linux VPS with full root access, Antihost VPS is available in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine regions, with NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs, 2 to 64 GB of RAM and unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port. It is self-managed and includes a 14-day free trial.
Before creating the server
- Confirm the exact image name and version, not merely “Ubuntu” or “CentOS.”
- Check whether the image receives updates from the expected upstream repositories.
- Record the provider’s rebuild, snapshot and rescue options.
- Verify that the provider supports your required architecture, storage type, IPv4 or IPv6 needs and virtualization features.
- Confirm how the provider handles image replacement when the distribution reaches EOL.
- Decide where backups, logs and secrets will live independently of the VPS disk.
These checks prevent a common failure mode: choosing an operating system in a comparison article, then discovering that the desired region supplies an outdated or differently maintained image.

| Your situation | Better starting choice | Reason and condition |
|---|---|---|
| New VPS with no established operating-system standard | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS | It provides the longer standard-support runway and a predictable LTS baseline through 31 May 2029. |
| Existing RHEL or CentOS automation and packages | CentOS Stream 9, if compatibility is the priority | It keeps the RPM/DNF, SELinux and RHEL-family operating model, but requires a migration or replacement plan before 31 May 2027. |
| Longest supported production baseline | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with Ubuntu Pro evaluated separately | Standard maintenance reaches May 2029; Canonical lists expanded and Legacy endpoints in May 2034 and May 2039. |
| Testing behavior intended for a future RHEL release | CentOS Stream 9 | Its public-stream position is the reason to select it; keep the environment controlled and plan the next lifecycle step. |
| Performance-sensitive application | Whichever passes your workload test | Provider and configuration effects dominate; distribution branding alone is insufficient evidence. |
A deployment workflow for a new VPS
- Write the service requirements. List the application, data stores, integrations, required security controls, expected lifetime and recovery target.
- Identify existing dependencies. Search your automation and runbooks for RPM, DNF, APT, SELinux, repository and service-file assumptions.
- Set the lifecycle horizon. For Ubuntu, record 31 May 2029 as the standard-maintenance endpoint. For CentOS Stream 9, record 31 May 2027 and assign a migration owner immediately.
- Select the provider image. Confirm the exact release and repository source in the provider’s catalog for your chosen region.
- Build a disposable test server. Install the application, apply hardening, configure monitoring and exercise backups before putting production traffic on the VPS.
- Validate updates. Apply routine updates in a staging copy and document reboots, service restarts and rollback procedures.
- Test recovery. Restore the important data and configuration to a clean server so a provider failure or image replacement does not become an emergency experiment.
- Record the next review date. Lifecycle dates, provider images and application dependencies change; schedule a review well before the support endpoint.
Moving an existing CentOS workload to Ubuntu
A cross-family migration is a rebuild and validation project, not an in-place package conversion. The safest pattern is to provision a new Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VPS, reproduce the service configuration, restore application data, test integrations and switch traffic only after verification.
Migration checklist
- Export application configuration, database schemas, scheduled jobs, certificates and secret references.
- Document every installed package and repository, including software that was added manually.
- Map each package and service to its Ubuntu equivalent; do not assume names or default paths match.
- Translate firewall rules, service permissions, users, groups and security policies.
- Rebuild automation with explicit distribution conditionals and test it from a clean image.
- Restore a recent backup into a non-production instance and run application-level checks.
- Plan DNS, load-balancer or reverse-proxy changes with a rollback window.
- Keep the original server intact until monitoring confirms that the new instance is healthy.
The work is justified when the longer Ubuntu lifecycle or your team’s Debian-family expertise outweighs the cost of rewriting RHEL-specific procedures. If the workload is tightly coupled to RHEL tooling, staying with Stream for a controlled period may reduce immediate risk, provided the 2027 boundary remains visible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling CentOS Stream “the old CentOS”
Use the full product name in architecture documents and purchase requests. “CentOS” without “Stream 9” can hide a materially different update model and lifecycle.
Best Value
Ignoring the EOL date when selecting Stream
A short-term compatibility benefit does not remove the need for a replacement plan. Put the 31 May 2027 date on the service roadmap before deployment.
Assuming package commands and paths are portable
APT and RPM/DNF ecosystems differ in package naming, repositories and defaults. Test installation and upgrades on a clean target image rather than editing a few command names in production scripts.
Treating Ubuntu Pro dates as automatic standard support
May 2034 and May 2039 are optional Ubuntu Pro lifecycle endpoints listed by Canonical, not the standard Ubuntu 24.04 LTS term. Confirm the service and cost before relying on them.
Choosing on an unverified benchmark
There is no controlled universal benchmark in the available authoritative material. Measure the actual application on the actual VPS configuration if performance determines the purchase.
Leaving provider details until the end
The operating system is only useful if the provider offers the required image, region, storage and recovery features. Verify those constraints before committing your automation.
Planning the lifecycle from 2026 onward
If you deploy Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Use the standard-maintenance endpoint of 31 May 2029 as the first major review. Decide in advance whether you will move to a later Ubuntu release, adopt Ubuntu Pro coverage, rebuild on a new provider image or retire the service. The optional May 2034 and May 2039 endpoints can support longer-lived systems only when the applicable Ubuntu Pro services are deliberately purchased and maintained.
If you deploy CentOS Stream 9
Start migration discovery during deployment, not during the final months before 31 May 2027. Test an Ubuntu target if a longer standard runway is attractive, or evaluate another RHEL-family target if compatibility is non-negotiable. Keep backups and infrastructure definitions portable so the lifecycle decision does not depend on an irreplaceable server.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For both distributions
Separate application data from the operating-system disk where practical, maintain restorable backups, monitor update failures and document the rebuild path. A VPS is replaceable infrastructure only when the service can actually be recreated.
Final recommendation
Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for most new VPS deployments in 2026. Its standard security maintenance through 31 May 2029 gives a new server a materially longer supported baseline than CentOS Stream 9’s listed 31 May 2027 EOL. Choose CentOS Stream 9 when the RHEL-family ecosystem or pre-RHEL validation is the requirement that matters most, and attach a dated migration plan to that choice. For speed-critical services, let an application benchmark on the selected provider decide.
