Find the last successful startup stage before changing anything. Save the complete console output and server log, then test a clean, updated vanilla server until it reaches “Server startup complete”. If vanilla is stable, restore server.cfg, your map, Oxide, and plugins one layer at a time. That sequence distinguishes a broken RustDedicated install from a map, configuration, plugin, or host problem without destroying the evidence you need.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
A server that exits immediately and one that crashes after hours require different investigations. The workflow below covers both, including custom-map failures, Oxide loading, scheduled events, resource pressure, and the separate “Steam not open?” client error.

Start with evidence, not a reinstall
Repeatedly restarting can overwrite the exact lines that identify a failure. Stop the restart loop if possible and preserve the original files before updating, deleting plugins, or changing settings.
Capture the files and timestamps
- Copy the complete console transcript from the failed launch.
- Add
-logfileto the normal startup command, or preserve the file it already creates. Facepunch’s server setup guidance uses this option so console output remains available after the process exits. - Save the newest crash report, dump, or host-process event supplied by your host.
- Copy
server.cfg, the server identity folder, map name or URL, Oxide version, plugin list, and the exact times of each exit. - Keep untouched originals. Work on copies so a host or plugin author can inspect the first failure.
For modded servers, the daily log under oxide/logs is usually the most useful record. uMod documents both server logs and compiler logs there. A compiler warning or notification by itself does not establish that the runtime crash came from that plugin; match the timestamp and stack trace to the exit.

Use the last successful startup stage to narrow the cause
A healthy RustDedicated boot eventually prints “Server startup complete” (Facepunch Rust Wiki wording). Locate the last stage reached before the process dies, then investigate only the layers that can run at that point.
| What you observe | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Process exits immediately | Executable and SteamCMD update state, file permissions, runtime dependencies, launch arguments, and the final console error. |
| Exit during world or map generation | Switch to a stock procedural map; inspect the complete NRE stack trace; validate the custom map URL and prefabs. |
| Exit while Oxide or plugins load | Launch without Oxide, confirm the provider supports Oxide 2.0 or newer, check oxide.version, and restore plugins in controlled groups. |
| Boot completes, then the server crashes during play | Correlate the crash time with logs, plugin errors, map events, scheduled restarts, CPU or memory pressure, and host process events. |
Facepunch’s troubleshooting FAQ says that in “99% of cases,” startup errors are caused by user configuration or installation mistakes. Treat that as a reason to check files and settings methodically, not as proof that your host hardware is innocent.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Build a clean, repeatable baseline
The baseline test answers the most important question: can the current Rust server build start without custom variables? Back up first; the identity folder, world data, plugin data, and logs may be needed to restore the live server.
- Back up the live instance. Include identity and configuration files, map files or URLs, Oxide data, plugins, and all logs.
- Update once through SteamCMD. Record the update date and build or manifest information shown by the tool. Do not put an unconditional SteamCMD update in the same script that launches a modded server.
- Prepare a minimal launch. Use the normal RustDedicated executable with only the essential port, query, RCON, and logging arguments. Keep
-logfileenabled. - Start with no Oxide, plugins, custom map, or nonessential configuration. Use a known-good procedural world.
- Wait for the completion line. A first world generation can take several minutes. Do not interpret ordinary startup noise or isolated warnings as a crash.
- Run the baseline more than once. An immediate repeat exit points to installation, launch, permissions, or host dependencies; a stable repeat gives you a control case for the next change.
When the vanilla instance is stable, restore exactly one layer at a time: essential server.cfg values, then the custom map, then Oxide, then small plugin groups. Keep a dated changelog. The first addition that reproduces the failure identifies the layer to examine; remove only that layer while leaving the working baseline intact.
Check update and configuration traps
Do not overwrite a modded install on every launch
Facepunch warns that running SteamCMD in a startup script can replace an Oxide installation with vanilla files. The safe order is: update Rust once, install the Oxide release that matches that Rust build, verify oxide.version, and only then start the server. If an automated host updates on every restart, change that policy or separate the update and launch jobs.
Review server.cfg before command-line arguments
Rust reads server.cfg at startup, and for many settings its values take priority over command-line values. Keep the command line small and inspect the configuration for:
Recommended Free Tools
- Typos, obsolete variables, or values from an older Rust release.
- Invalid map, webhook, or download URLs.
- Duplicate settings whose later value silently overrides the first.
- Port, RCON, hostname, seed, world-size, or identity values that point to an unintended instance.
Temporarily move nonessential settings out of the file rather than guessing which one is harmful. Add them back in a documented order after the baseline starts.
Diagnose custom-map crashes
Custom maps introduce three independent failure points: the download, the map’s assets, and world or ocean path generation. Test a procedural map first; if it boots, the custom map becomes the leading suspect.
Validate the download address
Use a publicly reachable direct download URL that ends in the map file, normally .map. A Discord landing page, HTML page, login screen, or redirect that does not deliver the file directly can make startup fail. Download the URL from the server host itself to confirm that the host—not just your desktop browser—can retrieve it.
Read the complete NRE stack trace
If the log reports a broken prefab or a null-reference exception (NRE), open the full trace rather than relying on its first line. The trace can identify the offending prefab. Remove or replace that prefab in the map editor, export the map again, and retest it on the clean baseline. Follow the map FAQ’s guidance for vehicle and NPC content: use the relevant spawner prefabs instead of placing vehicle or NPC entities directly when the map tool recommends that approach.

Handle maps with no usable ocean
Some all-water or enclosed maps stall when Rust tries to generate cargo-ship paths because no usable ocean area exists. Add adequate ocean space in the map when possible. For the documented no-ocean case, Facepunch lists these settings:
baseboat.generate_paths false
cargoship.event_enabled false
Apply them only when the map’s geometry matches that case; disabling path generation or cargo events is not a general fix for unrelated map errors.
Isolate Oxide and plugins without losing your world
uMod requires a server provider capable of running Oxide 2.0 or higher. Plugins normally reside in oxide/plugins. A replacement .cs file is loaded automatically when Oxide is installed, but automatic loading does not make an incompatible plugin safe.
Perform the no-plugin test
- Back up the entire
oxidedirectory, includingdata, config, logs, and plugin files. - Move plugin
.csfiles to a temporary folder outsideoxide/plugins; do not delete their data yet. - Start the server with Oxide still installed but no plugins enabled.
- Confirm the Oxide version in the console and test a complete boot and a representative play session.
- Restore plugins in small groups. Put the most recently changed or highest-risk plugin in a group by itself so the first reproducing change is obvious.
If the server crashes with no plugins, investigate the Oxide build, provider compatibility, Rust build, configuration, or host. If it is stable, restore one plugin or one tightly related group at a time and record the result. Replace outdated .cs files with current versions rather than editing around compiler errors.
Separate compile messages from runtime failures
Compiler errors, warnings, and notifications in oxide/logs tell you that a plugin did or did not compile. They do not, by themselves, prove a runtime crash. A useful correlation has the plugin name, the exception or stack trace, and a timestamp immediately before the process exit or the in-game event that triggers it.
Check policy and listing state after restoration
Facepunch’s policy update dated March 4, 2026 places gameplay- or UI-modifying plugins under the Modded listing, with limited exceptions for Community servers. After re-enabling such plugins, verify that the server’s listing category and description match its actual behavior. A listing change will not normally cause a process crash, but an unexpected category can indicate that the wrong server files or launch profile were restored.
Find the cause of a random crash after a successful boot
“Random” usually means event-triggered or time-dependent, not causeless. Build a timeline from the exact exit time and ask what happened immediately before it.
Compare the server log with the event
- Mark the last normal tick, save, wipe, restart, or map event in the log.
- Look for the same exception on every occurrence. A repeated stack trace is stronger evidence than a one-off warning.
- Check plugin timers, scheduled commands, automated wipes, cargo or other world events, and external restart tasks.
- Compare crashes that occur only after players join with crashes that occur while the server is empty.
Check resource and host signals
Ask the host for CPU, memory, disk, and process-event data covering the crash minute. Note whether the operating system killed the process, the host restarted the instance, storage filled, or a watchdog intervened. Do not infer an out-of-memory failure solely from a slow tick or a warning; require a matching host event or log entry.
Use a controlled soak test
Run the clean baseline for the same duration that normally precedes a crash. Then repeat with the map, Oxide, and plugins restored in stages. If only one stage fails after a predictable event, keep that event and component isolated while contacting its author. If every configuration fails at the same host time, investigate scheduled jobs, maintenance, watchdogs, or operating-system events rather than deleting plugins at random.
Distinguish a client error from a dedicated-server crash
The message “Steam not open?” on an administrator’s Rust client is a client startup problem, not evidence that RustDedicated exited. Facepunch’s sequence is:
Rank #3
- Acrylic Painting Pla Plastic
- Restart Steam.
- Install any pending Steam updates.
- Opt out of Steam beta participation.
- Verify Rust’s files in Steam.
- Perform a fresh client install if the error persists.
File verification on the client cannot repair a dedicated process on a remote host. If the host process exits, use the server log, the clean baseline, and host event data instead.
Choose a remedy by failure layer
| Failure layer | Typical reproducibility | Reversible first action | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client Steam or Rust files | Every client launch | Restart/update Steam, leave betas, verify files | A fresh client install still fails. |
| RustDedicated files or dependencies | Every server launch, including vanilla | One SteamCMD update, permissions and dependency check, then a clean launch | The completion stage is never reached on a known-good host configuration. |
| Configuration | Immediate or repeatable after a setting change | Start with a minimal server.cfg; add settings one at a time |
The same minimal configuration fails. |
| Custom map | Only with one map or at world generation | Use a procedural map; validate direct URL, prefab trace, and ocean geometry | The stock map also fails. |
| Oxide or plugin | Only after mod loading or a specific event | Run without plugins; restore small groups and update the matching release | Oxide-free vanilla is unstable. |
| Host operating system or service | Often time- or load-dependent | Correlate host process, resource, watchdog, and scheduled-task logs | The host cannot provide timestamps, dumps, or stable resource data. |
Prepare a useful report for your host or plugin author
Send a compact, reproducible packet instead of “the server randomly crashes.” Include:
- Rust build or update date, Oxide version, provider type, operating system, and server start command with secrets removed.
- The complete console output and the relevant daily file from
oxide/logs, if modded. - The exact UTC or local timestamp and whether the process exited, froze, or was restarted by a watchdog.
- Map name and direct URL, procedural seed or world size, and whether the failure occurs on a stock map.
server.cfgand identity settings with passwords, tokens, and private addresses redacted.- Plugin filenames and versions, plus the smallest plugin group that reproduces the failure.
- Host CPU, memory, disk, and operating-system events for the same minute.
- The last successful startup stage and the first error or stack trace after it.
Keep the original logs available. Truncated excerpts can hide the first exception or a preceding download failure.
Prevent the next crash
- Separate update, mod installation, and launch jobs; never silently replace a modded install with a vanilla update.
- Keep dated backups of identity, configuration, map, plugin data, and logs before every Rust or Oxide change.
- Maintain a plugin and configuration changelog so you can roll back one variable.
- Test updates on a disposable copy with a procedural map before applying them to the live world.
- Use a known-good baseline after each Rust, Oxide, map, or major plugin update.
- Configure restart automation to preserve logs and report the reason for a restart rather than masking an exit.
Managed Rust server hosting can centralize updates, backups, restart policies, and mod support, but features and diagnostic access vary by provider. Confirm that you can download full logs, control the Oxide version, test a vanilla instance, and obtain host resource events before treating a managed plan as a fix.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my server stop before it says it is ready?
Find the last startup stage in the preserved console and logfile. An exit before the completion line is usually in process launch, files, configuration, map generation, or plugin loading; use a minimal vanilla launch to separate those layers.
Can I delete all plugins to test the server?
Move the plugin .cs files out of oxide/plugins and back up the oxide directory instead of deleting it. This preserves data and lets you restore plugins in small, traceable groups.
Why does a custom map work on my computer but fail on the host?
The host may not be able to fetch the direct .map file, or the map may contain a broken prefab or unusable ocean geometry. Test the URL from the host, inspect the full NRE trace, and compare against a stock procedural map.
Are Oxide compiler warnings proof that Oxide caused the crash?
No. uMod’s logs documentation distinguishes compiler notifications from runtime failures. Match a plugin exception and timestamp to the process exit or the in-game event before assigning blame.
What should I do if vanilla is stable but the modded server is not?
Update Rust once, install the matching Oxide release, verify oxide.version, and restore configuration, map, and plugins one layer at a time. The first change that reproduces the crash is the layer to investigate.
