If Squad on PS5 cannot hear your squad, will not find a server, or keeps disconnecting, troubleshoot in layers: confirm PlayStation Network service, separate party chat from Squad game chat, verify the PS5 microphone and output device, test the headset, then work through the router and NAT only if the local checks pass. This order fixes the most common causes without changing network settings unnecessarily.
The instructions apply to the free PS5 alpha preview available in October 2026. Offworld Industries can change menus, voice channels, and networking behavior before the complete release, so use the labels currently shown on your console.

What is available on PS5 right now
Offworld Industries announced the PlayStation 5 version on October 15, 2026. A free alpha preview began on October 16, 2026, and its listing describes a 50-versus-50 preview of the 100-player military simulator. The complete PS5 release date is still listed as to be determined.
The PlayStation Store concept page says online play requires PlayStation Plus and supports up to 99 online players. Those details describe the planned console product, while the alpha listing is the version you can currently test. A console game in this stage can have temporary server, audio, or matchmaking faults that are corrected in later builds.

- VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings
Offworld’s console FAQ describes 4K dynamic-resolution upscaling and a 60 frames-per-second target for PS5. These are targets, not independent measurements, and neither figure explains a voice or matchmaking failure.
Communication is not optional in practical terms. Offworld Industries states in its October 15 announcement: “A microphone isn’t technically required to launch the game, but Squad is built around teamwork and players will have a significantly better experience when communicating with their squad.” Local, squad, and command communication are separate parts of that experience, so a working PlayStation party does not prove that Squad’s own channels are configured correctly.
Identify the failing layer before changing anything
| What you observe | Most useful first check | Likely scope |
|---|---|---|
| Your mic icon never reacts or nobody hears you | PS button > Game Base chat mode, then Settings > Sound > Microphone | Party/game-chat selection, mute state, input device, or headset |
| You hear a party but not squad members | Switch the active conversation from party chat to game chat | PlayStation chat routing or Squad channel selection |
| You hear others, but your voice cuts out | Watch the microphone input meter and test another headset | Physical mute, USB/controller input, or unstable network |
| Matchmaking searches indefinitely | Check PlayStation Network status, then fully restart Squad | PSN service, alpha server availability, or network path |
| You join and then disconnect | Power-cycle the PS5 and router; test Ethernet | Wi-Fi, router, NAT, ISP, or a server-side problem |
| NAT Type 3 appears | Check UPnP and ask the router maker or ISP for guidance | Restricted router or ISP path; not a reason to forward ports blindly |
Run one change at a time. After each change, test the same symptom so you know which layer actually helped.

1. Check PlayStation Network service first
Open the official PlayStation Network status page from a phone or browser and inspect Gaming and Social, Account Management, and any related services. If PlayStation reports an outage or maintenance, wait for recovery before changing router settings. A service incident can look exactly like a local matchmaking or voice problem.
If the status page is clear, sign out of the affected PS5 profile only if the console is behaving unusually, then sign back in and test another online game or PlayStation voice session. This comparison is diagnostic: if other online services also fail, stay focused on PSN or your connection rather than Squad’s in-game channels.

2. Switch deliberately between party chat and game chat
PS5 can route your microphone and headphones to a PlayStation party while Squad is waiting for game chat. You may therefore hear friends in a party and assume the game is broken, or speak in Squad while your party members hear silence.
- Press the PS button.
- Open Game Base and select the active party.
- Open the voice-chat card.
- Use the control that switches between party chat and game chat.
- Return to Squad and test local, squad, or command communication in the channel you intend to use.
Ask one teammate to confirm both directions: whether they see your speaking indicator and whether you hear their reply. Keep the party open only when you intentionally want party chat. If the party works but game chat does not, the PS5 network and microphone may be fine; concentrate on the selected chat mode and Squad’s channel controls.

3. Verify the PS5 microphone and audio output
Choose and test the input device
Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone. Confirm that Input Device is the microphone you intend to use: the DualSense controller microphone, a wired headset, or a USB microphone. Press the controller mute button once to ensure it is not muted. Select Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally. The input meter should move consistently rather than remaining flat or hitting the limit continuously.
A flat meter means Squad cannot be the first suspect: the PS5 is not receiving audio from that device. Check the connection and physical controls before changing any game option. A meter that responds in Settings but not in a match points toward chat mode, channel selection, or an alpha-specific issue.
Set the device that should carry sound
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the intended Output Device and review Output to Headphones. If you are using a headset, make sure game and chat audio are being sent to it rather than to the television. If you are testing the controller microphone with television speakers, keep the controller close enough for clear pickup and avoid creating feedback.

Disconnect and reconnect the headset at both ends. Check its physical mute switch, boom-microphone position, inline controls, and USB seating. A headset can be selected in software while its own switch still blocks input.
Try a second known-good headset or USB microphone. A PS5-compatible gaming headset with a microphone is the most direct replacement or diagnostic accessory; use it only after checking the mute state and input/output selections above. If the second device works, the original headset, cable, adapter, or controller connection is the fault domain.
If neither device produces movement in Adjust Microphone Level, test the controller microphone by itself. If the controller works but a USB device does not, remove and reconnect the USB device and test another port. If every input works in PS5 settings yet Squad alone remains silent, document that distinction for support instead of buying more hardware.
5. Restart the entire network path
For matchmaking searches, voice dropouts, or mid-match disconnects, turn off the PS5 and the modem/router. Leave both powered down for about five minutes, then start the modem/router, wait for it to regain service, and start the PS5. This clears temporary state in the console and network equipment; it is different from merely putting the PS5 into Rest Mode.

Prefer an Ethernet connection for the next test. A wired connection removes radio interference and distance from the Wi-Fi diagnosis. If Ethernet is not possible, move the PS5 closer to the router, reduce obstructions, and pause heavy downloads or streaming on the same network. Update router firmware using the manufacturer’s documented procedure.
After the restart, test one matchmaking attempt and one short voice exchange. If the wired test succeeds while Wi-Fi fails, the evidence points to wireless conditions rather than a Squad account or microphone fault. If both fail while other online services are healthy, continue to NAT and router checks.
6. Understand NAT Type 3 and router controls
PlayStation guidance identifies these ports for connection troubleshooting:
| Protocol | Ports | Why the list matters |
|---|---|---|
| TCP | 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 | PlayStation connection and service traffic referenced in support guidance |
| UDP | 3478, 3479, 49152–65535 | PlayStation connection traffic and the stated high-port range |
These numbers are troubleshooting references, not an instruction to create forwarding rules without understanding your router. Capcom’s PS5 guidance warns that NAT Type 3 can affect PSN online multiplayer and recommends checking UPnP or contacting the router maker or ISP. NAT Type 3 commonly means the console has a restricted path; it does not identify which device or policy caused the restriction.
Use the least risky router check
- Run the PS5 internet connection test and record the NAT type.
- Open the router’s administration page using its documented method.
- Check whether UPnP is available and enabled, following the router manufacturer’s security guidance.
- Reboot the router and PS5, then run the connection test again.
- If NAT remains Type 3, ask the router manufacturer or ISP whether carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, or an account-level restriction is involved.
Do not expose the console to the internet or forward every listed port as a guess. Port-forwarding syntax differs by router, and an ISP may control the upstream NAT. Router changes also require access credentials and can affect every device in the home.

7. Troubleshoot matchmaking and server discovery
When PSN is healthy, chat mode is correct, and the PS5 connection test is stable, close Squad completely and launch it again. A full game restart is the appropriate next attempt for a search that never finds a server or a browser that stops updating. Do not rely on Rest Mode to refresh an alpha session.
Retry after the restart and note whether the failure is immediate or occurs after a long search. An immediate error suggests account, service, or configuration trouble; a search that times out after appearing to work can indicate a server or network path problem. Record the exact wording rather than paraphrasing it.
If other games matchmake normally but Squad still cannot discover or hold a server, check Offworld’s official Squad support topics for current server-browser and audio incidents. Alpha menus and service behavior can change between builds, so an older workaround may no longer apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Fix voice dropouts during a match
First distinguish an audio-route failure from a network failure. If the PS5 microphone meter still responds in Settings but every Squad channel drops at once, check whether the game session lost connectivity. If only one channel is silent while others work, recheck the selected party/game-chat mode and the Squad channel you are using.
For a dropout that coincides with movement, interference, or a disconnect message, use the network restart and Ethernet test from Step 5. For a dropout that occurs only with one headset, use the hardware isolation test from Step 4. Do not change NAT settings to solve a microphone that has no input-meter activity; those are separate fault domains.
9. Escalate with evidence when local checks pass
Submit a request through Offworld’s official Squad Support path when PSN is operating, the PS5 microphone and output tests pass, the headset has been isolated, and a stable network still cannot find or hold a server. Include:
- The date and approximate time, including your time zone.
- The exact error text or a screenshot of the message.
- Your region and whether you used Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- The PS5 NAT type shown by the connection test.
- Whether PlayStation party chat worked at the same time.
- Whether the failure affected local, squad, command, or all game channels.
- Whether another headset or the controller microphone changed the result.
- The alpha build or menu version shown by the console, if displayed.
This information lets support separate a console audio route, a restricted ISP path, and an alpha server issue without asking you to repeat every basic test.
Choose the next fix by symptom and risk
| Fix | Best for | Scope | Reversible? | ISP/router access needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch party chat to game chat | Party works but squad members cannot hear you | PS5 chat routing and Squad channels | Yes | No |
| Adjust Microphone Level and unmute | No speaking indicator or flat input meter | PS5 microphone settings | Yes | No |
| Reconnect or substitute a headset | Only one headset fails or its mute switch is suspect | Headset, cable, USB, or controller | Yes | No |
| PSN status check | Several online services fail at once | PlayStation service | Not applicable | No |
| Power-cycle and Ethernet test | Search timeouts, voice dropouts, or disconnects | PS5, modem/router, and Wi-Fi path | Yes | Usually no; physical access helps |
| UPnP/NAT investigation | NAT Type 3 or persistent session failures | Router or ISP path | Yes, if documented | Often yes |
| Offworld support request | Only Squad fails after all local checks | Game service or alpha build | Not applicable | No |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume a working PlayStation party proves Squad game chat is enabled.
- Do not buy a headset before checking the controller mute button, the headset’s own mute switch, and the PS5 input meter.
- Do not forward ports blindly or place the PS5 in an exposed-router mode.
- Do not treat NAT Type 3 as proof that Squad’s servers are down; it only shows a restricted network path.
- Do not report a target such as 60 FPS as a measured performance result or use it to explain a voice failure.
- Do not keep changing several settings at once; one controlled test produces more useful evidence.
The fastest reliable path is therefore local and reversible: confirm service status, select game chat, verify the microphone meter and output device, isolate the headset, restart the network, and only then investigate NAT or contact Offworld. The PS5 alpha can change before launch, so preserve the exact menu labels and error text when you report a problem.
