How to Fix Spotify Podcast Episodes That Won’t Play or Download

If a Spotify podcast episode will not play or its download is stuck, first determine whether Spotify is failing for all content or only that episode. Then check your connection, download eligibility, available storage, app version and device limits. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory for downloads. Use Spotify’s Offline mode when you need to force playback from saved episodes. Reinstall only as a last resort: it can repair damaged app data, but it removes every local download.

Start with a two-minute diagnosis

Before changing account settings or deleting anything, test another Spotify song and another podcast episode while you are online. The result tells you which branch to follow.

What you observe Most useful next check What it tells you
Nothing plays, including songs Test Wi-Fi or mobile data, then reopen Spotify This is probably a connection, service, app or device problem rather than one podcast.
Other content plays, but one episode fails Check that episode’s download status, then try another episode from the same show A show-specific availability or feed problem is possible. Spotify’s general support guidance does not establish one universal cause for a single-feed failure.
Streaming works, but the download never completes Check eligibility, storage, download settings and background cleanup The problem is likely local downloading rather than playback.
A saved episode is visible but will not play offline Turn on Offline mode and check that the episode still shows the downloaded indicator Spotify may still be trying to load online content, or the local file may no longer be available.
Several downloads disappeared Reconnect, update Spotify and review device and storage conditions Spotify lists account synchronization, device limits, reinstalling, outdated software and SD-card faults as possible causes.

Do not assume that replacing headphones, a router or your subscription will repair corrupted local download data. Those changes address different problems.

Confirm that your account can download the episode

Premium and free-account rules

Spotify’s support guidance says Premium accounts can download albums, playlists and podcasts. Free accounts can download podcasts, but not music albums or playlists. If the download control is missing for a podcast, verify that you are signed in to the account you intend to use and that the episode is actually a podcast item rather than music content placed in a playlist.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Start while connected

  1. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, or enable mobile-data downloads if Wi-Fi is unavailable.
  2. Open the podcast show and the specific episode.
  3. Tap or click the download control. A downloaded indicator should appear when Spotify finishes saving the episode.
  4. Open another screen in Spotify and return to the episode to confirm the indicator remains.

Spotify uses Wi-Fi for downloads by default. On a phone or tablet, allow cellular downloads through Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Downloads and streaming. Your operating system may also restrict background data for Spotify; if the progress stops whenever the screen locks, review the system’s background-data permission for the app.

Interpret a stuck download

A progress spinner that never changes usually means Spotify cannot finish writing or retrieving the file. Leave the app online long enough to test once, then stop and restart the download rather than repeatedly tapping the control. If other episodes download normally, continue with the storage and show-specific checks below instead of changing your account.

Check connection and playback scope

When all Spotify content fails

  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to identify whether one network is blocking Spotify.
  • Open a normal web page on the same device. If that also fails, repair the connection before troubleshooting Spotify.
  • Temporarily disable a network filter, VPN or DNS blocker that could prevent Spotify from reaching its service, then test again.
  • Force-close Spotify, reopen it and retry a short episode.

If every song and podcast still fails on a working connection, restart the device before clearing data. A restart removes a temporary process or audio-session fault without deleting downloads.

When only one show or episode fails

Try a different episode from the same show and then an episode from another show. If only one item remains unavailable while everything else works, the feed or that episode’s availability may be the cause. The general Spotify support instructions do not identify a single fix that applies to every one-episode failure. Keep the app updated and retry later, but do not erase all local data solely because one episode is unavailable.

Make sure Spotify has room to save downloads

Free at least the recommended space

Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free memory for downloads. This is free device storage, not the size of one episode. Check the phone, tablet or computer’s storage screen and remove enough unused files to create a comfortable margin above 1 GB. Large video files, photos, offline maps and other downloaded media can consume space without appearing inside Spotify.

Prevent automatic cleanup from deleting Spotify data

Battery-saver, “cleaner” and automatic cache-clearing utilities can remove Spotify’s local files while the app is not running. Pause those utilities or add Spotify to their exclusions, then restart Spotify and download the episode again. On Android, also check whether the operating system is archiving or restricting the app when storage is low.

Retry after a clean restart of the app

  1. Stop the download and force-close Spotify.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or enable approved cellular downloads.
  4. Open Spotify, return to the episode and start one download.

Test one episode first. If it succeeds, queue the remaining episodes in smaller batches so you can see whether storage or a particular show causes the next failure.

Use Offline mode for reliable offline playback

Simply turning off Wi-Fi or mobile data does not always force Spotify to use local files; the app can continue trying to load online content. Spotify says downloaded content plays automatically when you lose internet, but Offline mode makes Spotify use only downloads. Items you have not downloaded appear grayed out while Offline mode is active.

  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].

Phone or tablet

  1. Open your profile menu.
  2. Choose Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline.
  3. Switch Offline mode on.
  4. Open the podcast library and play an episode that still shows the downloaded indicator.

Desktop app

  1. Open the Spotify menu.
  2. Select Offline Mode.
  3. Play a saved episode. Undownloaded items should be visibly unavailable or grayed out.

If the episode is grayed out in Offline mode, it is not currently stored on that device even if you remember downloading it. Reconnect, download it again and verify the indicator before going offline.

Understand why downloaded episodes disappear

Spotify lists several conditions that can make downloads unavailable. Check them in this order so you do not delete healthy local data.

You have been offline too long

The account must go online at least once every 30 days so Spotify can verify and synchronize downloads. Spotify’s Premium information says downloads become unavailable after 30 days offline until the library reconnects and synchronizes. Connect the affected device to the internet, open Spotify and leave it signed in long enough for the library to sync, then test the episode again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The account is using too many devices

Spotify’s current support figures allow up to 10,000 tracks per device on as many as five devices. The current Premium page describes up to 10,000 songs on each of five devices, or up to 50,000 songs total. These figures refer to Spotify’s stated music-download limits; they are not a promise that every podcast account or device can store an unlimited number of episodes. If you recently added a sixth device, remove an old device from your account management, reconnect the device you use and download the episode again.

Limit or requirement Qualification Action when reached
10,000 tracks on one device Spotify Support figure, current in 2026; stated for tracks Remove unneeded downloads or use another permitted device.
Five devices Spotify Support figure, current in 2026 Disconnect an unused device before downloading on a new one.
50,000 songs total Premium page figure: 10,000 songs on each of five devices Reduce saved content across devices if your account reaches the stated total.
At least 1 GB free memory Spotify’s recommendation for downloads Free device storage and prevent automatic cleanup.
Online every 30 days Needed to keep downloads active Reconnect and let Spotify synchronize.

The app was reinstalled or is out of date

Reinstalling removes local downloads by design, so every episode must be downloaded again. An outdated app can also make existing downloads unavailable. Update Spotify through your device’s normal app store or desktop installer before considering a reinstall.

An SD card is failing

This branch applies only to Android devices configured to store Spotify data on a removable SD card. A faulty, loose, full or intermittently readable card can make downloads vanish or fail during writing. If your device uses internal storage only, replacing an SD card cannot fix the problem.

  1. Check Android’s storage settings to confirm Spotify is using the removable card.
  2. Power the device off before removing or reseating the card; do not pull it while Spotify is writing.
  3. Check whether other files on the card open reliably and whether the card has free space.
  4. After reseating or replacing the card with a model compatible with your device, open Spotify online and download one short episode as a test.

Copy important personal files off a suspect card before formatting it. Formatting erases the card and is not a Spotify-specific repair. A compatible microSD card is relevant only for Android hardware that supports removable storage and allows Spotify data to be placed there.

Choose a repair level: restart, cache cleanup or clean reinstall

Repair Use it when Local-download impact
App restart and device restart A temporary playback or connection process is stuck Downloads remain.
Cache cleanup Spotify’s temporary files are damaged or oversized Spotify’s cache is removed; verify whether the app asks you to download episodes again.
Clean reinstall Playback and downloads still fail after connection, storage, update and limit checks Spotify says downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again.

Do not jump directly to a reinstall if a single episode is affected. A reinstall is useful for persistent app-data corruption, but it is a data-loss trade-off for offline content.

iPhone and iPad clean reinstall

  1. Open the device’s storage settings and select Spotify to clear its cache if that option is available.
  2. Delete Spotify from the iPhone or iPad Storage screen.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Install Spotify again from the App Store.
  5. Sign in, reconnect to the internet and download one test episode before restoring a large queue.

Existing Spotify downloads are deleted during this process and cannot be recovered as local files; download them again from the podcast pages.

Android 6.0 and later clean reinstall

  1. In Android app settings, clear Spotify’s storage and cache.
  2. Uninstall Spotify.
  3. Using a file manager, remove a remaining com.spotify.music folder from internal storage or the SD card if one is present.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Install Spotify again from Google Play, sign in and test one podcast download.

Clearing storage and removing the folder erases Spotify’s local data, including downloaded episodes. Skip the folder-removal step if you cannot identify the correct Spotify folder safely; an incorrect deletion can affect unrelated files.

Mac clean reinstall

  1. Quit Spotify completely.
  2. Remove the Spotify application.
  3. Delete com.spotify.client and com.spotify.client.helper from the Caches folder.
  4. Delete the Spotify folder from Application Support.
  5. Restart the Mac.
  6. Install Spotify again, sign in and download a test episode.

Windows 10 and later clean reinstall

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select Spotify and uninstall it.
  3. Install Spotify again from the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s desktop installer.
  4. Sign in online and verify one episode before downloading a larger library.

On Windows, the reinstall also removes local Spotify downloads. Keep the account credentials available because the new installation must synchronize your library again.

After the repair: verify offline playback before leaving Wi-Fi

  1. Open the episode while online and confirm the downloaded indicator.
  2. Switch on Offline mode using the mobile, tablet or desktop path above.
  3. Play the episode from your library.
  4. Try a second downloaded episode from another show.
  5. Turn Offline mode off only after both tests work, then reconnect periodically so Spotify can maintain the downloads.

If the first test works but a particular show still does not, treat that show or episode as a separate availability problem. If every test fails after a clean reinstall, document the device model, operating-system version, Spotify version, storage location and whether the account is Premium or free before contacting Spotify support; those details identify whether the next investigation belongs to the account, app or hardware.

Quick checklist

  • Test another song and podcast to separate a global failure from one episode.
  • Start downloads while online; Premium can download podcasts, while free accounts can download podcasts as well.
  • Allow cellular downloads at Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Downloads and streaming when needed.
  • Keep at least 1 GB of free device memory and exempt Spotify from automatic cleaners.
  • Use Offline mode instead of merely disabling Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Reconnect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active.
  • Review the five-device and 10,000-track-per-device limits before adding another device.
  • Investigate an SD card only when the Android device actually uses removable storage.
  • Restart first; reserve a clean reinstall for persistent app-data faults because it deletes local downloads.
