How to Fix “Something Happened and We Couldn’t Start the Upgrade” in Windows 11

The Windows 11 message is a generic Microsoft Store transaction failure. Learn how to distinguish an S-mode switch from a Home-to-Pro purchase and fix each without prematurely resetting your PC.

The message “Something happened and we couldn’t start the upgrade” is a generic Microsoft Store transaction failure. In Windows 11 it usually appears when the Store cannot complete either a switch out of S mode or a paid Home-to-Pro edition upgrade. It is not, by itself, evidence that the annual Windows feature update has failed.

First identify which operation you attempted, then use the matching Store route. The safest fixes are to complete pending updates, repair the Store, verify the Microsoft account and activation state, and check whether an organization policy is blocking the change.

Identify which “upgrade” failed

Windows uses the word upgrade for several different operations. Check the exact button you selected and your installed edition before changing anything.

  1. Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter to confirm the Windows version.
  2. Open Settings → System → Activation.
  3. Note whether the page says Windows 11 Home in S mode, Windows 11 Home, or Windows 11 Pro.
  4. Match the failed control to the table below.
What you clicked What it means Correct route
Get under “Switch out of S mode” Leaves S mode and changes the restricted configuration to standard Windows. Use the S-mode Store page.
Open Store or Upgrade under “Upgrade your edition of Windows” Purchases or applies a Windows 11 Home-to-Pro license. Use the Home-to-Pro Store flow.
A Windows Update or Installation Assistant button Attempts a Windows feature-version update. Troubleshoot Windows Update, not a Store transaction.

Microsoft specifically distinguishes the S-mode link from Upgrade your edition of Windows; choosing the latter does not take a device out of S mode. See the Windows 11 in S mode FAQ.

Check the prerequisites before retrying

  • Use a reliable internet connection and temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, or network-filtering security product.
  • Correct the date, time, time zone, and region in Settings → Time & language.
  • Open Settings → Windows Update and complete any update that requires a restart.
  • Open Microsoft Store and sign in to the intended Microsoft account. For a paid upgrade, it must be the account associated with the purchase.
  • Confirm that the installed Windows edition is activated. Microsoft requires an activated Home installation for the supported Home-to-Pro route.
  • Back up important files before repair or recovery operations.
  • If the PC belongs to a school or employer, assume a management policy may be intentional. Microsoft says an organization can prevent a device from leaving S mode.

Use the least-destructive fixes first

1. Restart, update Windows, and update the Store

  1. Go to Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart Windows.
  2. Open Microsoft Store → Library and select Get updates.
  3. After the Store finishes updating, retry the original operation once.

The Store client, licensing components, and Windows servicing components can update separately, so a restart that was not explicitly requested is still worthwhile.

2. Retry the correct Store path

For leaving S mode

  1. Open Settings → System → Activation.
  2. Under the S-mode section, select Go to the Store.
  3. On the Switch out of S mode page, select Get.
  4. Wait for confirmation instead of repeatedly selecting Try again.

Leaving S mode is free and permanent through the supported Windows setting; Microsoft does not provide a supported way to return to S mode. The official procedure is documented in Switching out of S mode in Windows. S mode is available with Windows 11 Home, not Pro, according to Microsoft’s S mode FAQ.

For a Home-to-Pro purchase

  1. Open Settings → System → Activation.
  2. Under Upgrade your edition of Windows, select the Microsoft Store option.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the purchase or will make it.
  4. Confirm the entitlement or purchase and allow Windows to restart when prompted.

Follow Microsoft’s Upgrade Windows Home to Windows Pro guidance. Do not buy a second license merely because the first installation attempt produced this message.

3. Repair or reset Microsoft Store

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Store, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair first.
  4. If Repair changes nothing, select Reset, restart the PC, and sign in to the Store again.

Menu names and placement can vary by Windows 11 build, language, edition, and management policy. Resetting can remove Store sign-in state, so be ready to authenticate again.

4. Clear the Store cache

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  3. Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
  4. Restart Windows and retry the correct upgrade path.

wsreset.exe is a practical cache-reset step frequently recommended in Microsoft community troubleshooting, including reports on exiting S mode. It is not a guaranteed cure.

5. Verify Store identity and basic downloading

  1. Sign out of Microsoft Store, close it, reopen it, and sign in with the intended account.
  2. Try downloading a free application.
  3. For a Pro purchase, open your Microsoft account order history and verify whether the transaction completed.

If the Store cannot download an ordinary free app, fix Store connectivity or authentication before retrying the upgrade. Community reports describe purchases that completed while installation did not; those reports show a possible entitlement-synchronization failure, not a universal cause. See the reports on Home-to-Pro failures and Pro upgrade problems.

Repair Windows without deleting your files

On supported Windows 11 installations, check Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now. This repair-reinstall replaces Windows components while normally preserving apps, files, and settings.

  • Read the confirmation screen carefully.
  • Keep the PC connected to power and back up important data first.
  • If the control is absent, that can reflect the Windows build, edition, hardware state, configuration, or management policy.

Microsoft Q&A users have reported this option helping with S-mode problems, but those are anecdotal reports rather than an official success rate. One example is Stuck in S Mode Windows 11. If the option is unavailable or fails, an in-place repair installation or Microsoft Support may be appropriate after confirming the choices that preserve your data.

Check management, licensing, and hardware edge cases

Work or school management

Press Windows + R, enter ms-settings:workplace, and press Enter. Also inspect Settings → Accounts → Access work or school. A managed device may enforce S mode or block Store transactions; local resets will not override that policy. Ask the administrator to confirm whether leaving S mode or changing editions is permitted.

ARM or Snapdragon devices

On Qualcomm Snapdragon systems, driver and application compatibility can differ after leaving S mode. Microsoft advises checking whether the hardware manufacturer supplies compatible drivers; consult the S mode FAQ before switching.

Only the upgrade transaction fails

If Windows is activated, the Store is updated and can download other apps, the correct account is signed in, and the device is not managed, the remaining problem may be account entitlement synchronization or a Microsoft service-side failure. Registry edits, random PowerShell commands, BIOS changes, and repeated factory resets cannot reliably repair that condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

  • Do not repeatedly purchase Windows 11 Pro while the first order is unresolved.
  • Do not start with a factory reset. It can erase data and may restore the same preinstalled S-mode state.
  • Do not change Secure Boot or other BIOS settings for a Store licensing error.
  • Do not use unofficial activators, registry scripts, “PC cleaners,” or third-party Windows keys.
  • Do not treat a generic Pro installation key as proof of activation or as a replacement for a purchased entitlement.

When to contact Microsoft

Escalate a paid-upgrade problem after checking order history and the account used for the purchase. Provide:

  • A screenshot or exact text of the error.
  • Your Windows edition, version, and activation status.
  • The Microsoft account used in Store.
  • The order number, if payment was taken.
  • Whether other Store applications download successfully.
  • Whether the PC is connected to work or school management.

Microsoft can verify whether the Pro entitlement is attached to the account, whether installation can be reissued, and whether a refund is available. If the issue is S mode on a managed device, contact the organization’s administrator instead.

Choose the right outcome

Situation Best route Trade-off
Home in S mode; you need ordinary desktop applications Switch out through the Store Free, but permanent.
Activated Home; you need Pro-only capabilities Use the Microsoft Store Home-to-Pro upgrade Paid license and account entitlement required.
Store downloads fail generally Repair/reset Store and clear its cache You may need to sign in again.
Device is organization-managed Ask the administrator Policy may intentionally block the change.
You only need a Store app that is available in S mode Remain in S mode You keep S-mode restrictions but avoid an irreversible switch.

If by “Windows 11 2024 upgrade” you meant a yearly feature update, use Windows Update or the Installation Assistant troubleshooting path instead. The Microsoft Store message described here concerns an edition or S-mode transaction, not a normal feature-version upgrade.
