The hand gesture is the Signal for Help, also called the Violence at Home Signal for Help. It communicates, in effect, “I need help, but I may not be able to say so openly.” The intended response is to reach out safely—not to confront anyone or automatically call the police.
It is a one-handed movement: open palm facing out, thumb tucked into the palm, then fingers folded over the thumb. TikTok helped popularize it, but the Canadian Women’s Foundation and its partners launched it in April 2020.

How to make the Signal for Help
From the viewer’s perspective, look for the complete three-part movement rather than only a closed fist:
- Open your hand with the palm facing outward.
- Tuck your thumb into your palm.
- Fold your other fingers down over the thumb, forming a closed fist.
The gesture can be shown in person, through a window or on a video call when speaking or texting may be unsafe. The Canadian Women’s Foundation’s description and launch context are available in its responder action guide and background explainer.

What the gesture means
The official idea is “reach out to me safely.” It may indicate domestic or family violence, coercive control, trafficking or another threatening situation, but the movement does not identify the exact problem or tell you what intervention the person wants.
It is a communication tool, not a guaranteed emergency code. Recognition depends on someone seeing the whole movement, knowing what it means and having a safe way to respond.
Did TikTok create the hand signal?
No. The Canadian Women’s Foundation and partners created and launched the Signal for Help in April 2020, when pandemic restrictions increased isolation and video calls became more common. TikTok and other social platforms helped spread awareness. A 2021 Kentucky case involving a 16-year-old drew further attention after a motorist reportedly recognized the gesture, as described in a Senate of Canada statement.

Calling it a “TikTok hand sign” gives the wrong credit and can imply that it is a platform-specific trend.
What to do if someone uses it
Prioritize the person’s safety and control over the situation.
- Do not confront a suspected abuser. An accusation or sudden intervention can increase surveillance or violence.
- Do not announce that you recognized the signal. Avoid drawing attention during a call, in public or in front of a controlling person.
- Find a safe, discreet way to check in. Use a channel that is unlikely to be monitored, and avoid messages that plainly mention abuse if another person might read them.
- Ask neutral questions: “Are you okay?”, “Can you talk safely?” and “What would you like me to do?”
- Let the person explain and choose options when there is no immediate threat. They may want a ride, a safe place, a trusted adult or simply continued contact—not authorities at once.
- Use emergency services for an immediate threat to life or serious physical injury. Contact the emergency number for the person’s location.
The Canadian Women’s Foundation says the signal does not prescribe one universal response. Its guidance is summarized in the Canadian Centre for Information on Missing Adults explanation.

If you are not sure the movement was intentional
Do not treat one ambiguous fist as proof, but do not dismiss a possible request for help. Consider whether you saw the palm-out, thumb-in, fingers-over-thumb sequence; whether it was repeated; whether the person made eye contact; and whether the setting suggests they could not speak freely.

Do not question them in front of a possible abuser, family member or other controlling observer.
Important limitations
It is not universal
Many people recognize the gesture, but recognition varies by country, age, platform exposure and context. A viewer may miss part of the motion on a low-resolution video or livestream.

It can produce false positives
Similar movements can occur during ordinary conversation, jokes, acting or online trends. Treat the gesture as a reason to check in, not as definitive proof of a particular crime.
It may not remain covert
A controlling person can learn the gesture’s meaning. Someone being monitored may be unable to use it safely, and public awareness can make it less discreet in some households. Use it only when doing so does not increase risk.
It is not accessible to everyone
Not everyone can make the movement or appear on camera. A person may instead use an agreed code word, a prearranged text, a trusted contact or a local domestic-violence service—provided that method is safe for them.

No. The Signal for Help was created as a campaign gesture and is not intended to represent anything in American Sign Language or another formal sign language. It should not be described as an official ASL sign for “help,” “danger” or “SOS.”
Can it be used for other emergencies?
In practice, someone may use it to silently indicate that they feel threatened or need assistance. The campaign, however, was created primarily around violence at home, intimate-partner violence and family violence. It is not a standardized code for every emergency, and it does not replace emergency services, safeguarding professionals or specialist support.
If you need help
If you are experiencing abuse, choose the safest available way to contact a trusted person or a local domestic-violence service. If your life or safety is in immediate danger, contact emergency services for your location. If you are helping a child or teenager, involve a trusted adult, school safeguarding professional or child-protection service as appropriate to the circumstances and local rules.
