How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi When Your Signal Bars Look Strong

Strong Wi-Fi bars measure signal indication, not internet speed. Use repeatable tests, device comparisons, and Ethernet to pinpoint the cause before changing settings or buying equipment.

Strong Wi-Fi bars show that your device is receiving a signal; they do not confirm that the connection has enough capacity, that your broadband service is working properly, or that your internet speed is good. Before changing router settings or buying equipment, compare repeated speed tests, devices, and—if possible—Wi-Fi with an Ethernet connection. Those checks help identify whether the problem is your broadband connection, the wireless network, a particular device, or one location in your home.

Start with repeatable speed tests

Run a speed test more than once, noting the time, location, device, and whether it is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Test in different parts of your home, and repeat at another time: a single result may reflect temporary household or network conditions. Microsoft recommends testing in different home locations and recording results before and after changes; Ofcom also advises repeated tests because results can vary by time and test provider. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance for Windows and Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Use the same test provider and, where practical, the same device for comparisons. Focus on whether results change consistently after one adjustment, rather than treating one number as a definitive diagnosis.

Compare another device and a wired connection

If only one device is slow

Test another phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi, in the same location. If the second device performs normally, focus first on the affected device: check for downloads, updates, or other background apps using bandwidth; confirm that its Wi-Fi adapter supports the band your network uses; and install available device or adapter updates. Microsoft’s Windows connection troubleshooting covers background apps and band support. Replacing the router is unlikely to be the right first move when other devices work well.

If Wi-Fi is slow across devices, compare with Ethernet

Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and run the same test. If the wired result is good while Wi-Fi remains slow, investigate wireless conditions or device compatibility. If both are slow, the problem may lie in the broadband service, modem, router, or the path between them. Ofcom recommends using Ethernet where practical, and TP-Link’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide describes this wired-versus-wireless comparison.

To test the broadband connection more directly, follow your ISP’s or equipment maker’s instructions for connecting a computer to the modem. Do not assume that every modem or ISP setup supports the same test method. TP-Link’s guide is from 2018 and gives examples for its own products, so use your own manufacturer’s instructions for exact steps and settings.

  • Improve placement. Put the router in an open, central position rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet. Test closer to the router and in the problem area. Walls and other physical surroundings can affect wireless performance; Microsoft’s home-layout guidance discusses how placement and barriers matter.
  • Check the Wi-Fi band and device support. A device may not support every band offered by the router. Compare its performance with a device known to support the network’s available bands, and check the documentation for both devices before changing settings.
  • Consider nearby network congestion and interference. Other networks and devices can affect wireless conditions even when your own signal indication looks strong. Google’s advice on improving Wi-Fi speed with Nest Wifi and Google Wifi is product-specific; use your router maker’s guidance for other equipment.
  • Review channel settings only with the right instructions. Router channel and channel-width settings may matter, but exact options and behavior vary by model and region. Consult the router manufacturer’s documentation rather than copying settings intended for another brand.

Check household traffic and equipment state

Notice whether the slowdown coincides with video calls, large downloads, cloud backups, or other bandwidth-heavy activity. As a temporary test, pause or disconnect devices that are not needed and rerun the speed test. If performance improves, household network use may be part of the cause. Ofcom includes checking how the network is being used among its troubleshooting steps.

Restart the router and modem according to your ISP’s or manufacturer’s directions. Check for firmware updates through the equipment maker’s normal update process. Microsoft also recommends checking background applications and firmware when troubleshooting a slow connection. Avoid changing several settings at once: doing so makes it harder to identify what fixed—or worsened—the problem.

Choose the next step from the test pattern

What your tests show What to investigate next
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow across devices Check for an ISP service issue and investigate the modem/router path. Contact your ISP with test times and results if the wired connection remains below your service expectations.
Ethernet is normal, but Wi-Fi is slow across devices Focus on router placement, wireless congestion or interference, and router/client compatibility or settings.
One device is slow, while other devices work normally Check that device’s background apps, Wi-Fi band support, adapter, and software; seek device-specific support if needed.
Wi-Fi works well near the router but poorly in one distant room Assess placement and coverage in that part of the home. Consider a coverage solution only if the tests point to a coverage limitation.

Ofcom puts the central distinction plainly: “A slow Wi-Fi test does not always mean there is a fault with your broadband line.” Its guidance is UK consumer advice, not a guarantee of any particular ISP speed. The page was published on 13 October 2023 and last updated on 25 August 2026.

When extra hardware or ISP help makes sense

Buy equipment only when your comparisons point to a problem it can address. A mesh system or extender may help with weak coverage in a particular part of the home; it cannot repair a slow broadband service. Ofcom notes that boosters can affect speed, so assess the result rather than assuming an added device will improve it.

If you need a cable for a wired comparison, TP-Link suggests checking the Ethernet cable between the modem and router, including trying Cat 6 or better. That is a troubleshooting option, not a universal fix for slow Wi-Fi: use a replacement only if you lack a suitable working cable or suspect the existing one is faulty, and check that your devices and ports support the connection you intend to test.

Contact your ISP when a wired test at the router or modem remains slow, sharing the times and results you recorded and asking about service issues. If just one device is affected, contact its maker or support provider. If the issue is limited to a distant room, resolve the placement and coverage question before considering new hardware.
