Shader pre-caching is a strategy for doing some of that work before gameplay needs it—or saving results so they can be reused later. Compilation is the work; pre-caching changes when it happens and whether its output can be reused.
What is the difference?
Compilation is a transformation step. Depending on the engine and graphics API, it may happen during asset import or a build, on demand, or as part of creating a graphics pipeline. A cache can avoid repeating some of that work when matching inputs and compatible saved data are available.

Pre-caching or prewarming means proactively creating likely-needed shader variants or pipeline states before their first use, often during startup or a loading screen. The goal is to move expensive work away from the moment a draw first needs it. It does not mean every possible shader or pipeline has already been compiled.

| Shader compilation | Converts shader code or an intermediate representation into something the API or driver can use; may produce a variant or contribute to pipeline creation. | At import/build time, on demand, or during pipeline creation. | A compiled shader does not necessarily mean the complete pipeline state needed for a draw is ready. | Variant cache | Reuses a previously compiled matching shader variant. | When the same inputs are needed again. | A changed or missing variant may need compilation. Unity notes that deleting its shader cache means variants are compiled again. Unity shader compilation. |
| Prewarming or precooking | Requests GPU representations or creates selected states before first use. | Commonly during startup or loading. | Incomplete state information or coverage can leave first-use stalls. Unity’s shader-loading documentation. |
| Pipeline-state-object (PSO) cache or precaching | Stores or precompiles pipeline state objects, which combine shader stages with rendering state. | During loading, in background work, or on later runs if compatible data persists. | The engine must discover or predict useful states; coverage and compatibility vary. Why a compiled shader may still cause a hitch
A shader variant is not always a ready-to-draw pipeline. Modern APIs can require the engine to package shader stages together with render-state settings into a pipeline state object. Epic explains: “Modern APIs require developers to package all the shaders and settings they will use for a draw request into a Pipeline State Object and set it as a single unit.” Epic’s PSO article.

That distinction matters because a game may have compiled shader code but still need to create a particular pipeline configuration when it encounters a material, mesh, or rendering state for the first time. If that creation happens during gameplay, the delay can appear as a hitch. A cache hit can avoid some repeated work, but only when the relevant object is present and usable.
What can a shader cache contain?
“Shader cache” is an umbrella term, not a guarantee that every engine stores the same thing. Depending on the system, cached data may be preprocessed shader input, a compiled shader variant, driver-specific output, or a complete pipeline state object. These layers address different costs and are not interchangeable.
Compiled shader variants
Unity’s editor checks Library/ShaderCache for an identical previously compiled variant. If it finds one, it reuses it; if not, it compiles the variant and saves it. At player build time, required variants that have not yet been compiled are compiled into the game data. Unity shader compilation.

Unity’s Caching Shader Preprocessor stores intermediate preprocessing data so unchanged include files do not have to be parsed again for multiple variants. This speeds part of the import and compilation pipeline; it is not the same as asking the driver to prewarm a GPU representation. Unity shader compilation.

Pipeline states
Vulkan’s VkPipelineCache lets an application reuse pipeline-creation data. An application can save cache data to a file and reuse it on a later run, avoiding some costly creation work. Vulkan Guide: Pipeline Cache. In a broader sense, pre-caching can also mean proactively creating likely pipelines before the application first needs them; persistence between runs is one possible feature, not the definition of pre-caching.
How prewarming works in Unity
Unity describes prewarming as asking the graphics driver to create GPU representations of shader variants before they are first needed, commonly during startup or a loading screen. Unity shader loading.
For DirectX 12, Metal, and Vulkan, Unity says an accurate GPU representation requires the exact vertex data layout and render state. Unity recommends rendering materials off-screen to provide that information. Its ShaderVariantCollection.WarmUp and Shader.WarmupAllShaders APIs cannot supply those details, so they may create inaccurate representations. A warm-up call alone therefore does not prove that the pipeline configuration gameplay will use is ready. Unity shader loading.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.2 article describes identifying potential PSOs when objects load, based on material, mesh, and global settings, then compiling a subset during loading. As an example, Epic reports that a Fortnite Battle Royale match compiles about 30,000 PSOs and uses about 10,000, out of a possible combination space of millions. Epic says the system eliminated PSO-compilation stuttering for materials, but also describes coverage gaps and outstanding tasks that can still cause a hitch if needed immediately. These figures and results are Epic’s reported Fortnite example, not a general benchmark for games. Epic’s PSO precaching article.
Windows Advanced Shader Delivery
Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a distribution pipeline that prepares compiled results before a game reaches a player. It creates a State Object Database (SODB), tests and compiles it into a Precompiled Shader Database (PSDB), then deploys the SODB to a storefront. Microsoft says this can reduce on-device compilation, load time, gameplay stutter, and compilation power use; it does not publish a universal percentage reduction in the cited documentation. ASD depends on a supported Windows version, an ASD-capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration. Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery.
What pre-caching trades off—and why it can miss
Moving work earlier can reduce the chance that pipeline creation interrupts a draw, but it shifts costs rather than making them disappear. Compilation may lengthen startup or loading, background work can compete for resources, and persisted cache data uses storage. The balance depends on the engine, API, GPU and driver, and how many likely states the game can identify.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Coverage is the central limitation. A game can only pre-create states it knows about or predicts. Unity’s requirement for exact vertex layout and render state on DirectX 12, Metal, and Vulkan shows why a generic shader warm-up may not match a later draw. Epic likewise documents Unreal PSO coverage gaps and outstanding tasks. A cache or precompile step is not a promise of stutter-free play. Unity shader loading; Epic PSO precaching.
How to interpret a game’s “shader compilation” screen
A progress screen usually indicates that the game is doing some shader- or pipeline-related preparation, but the label alone does not reveal exactly what is being compiled, whether results will persist, or which states are covered. Those details depend on the game’s engine and implementation. If a game stutters later, it may have encountered a state it did not prepare, or work that its cache cannot reuse; the presence of a compilation screen does not establish that every future pipeline was covered.
