To build around it, weigh chance against crit bonus, normal damage, attack frequency, and the specific weapon or ability’s behavior. A high displayed chance alone does not tell you which upgrade will deal more damage.
What does critical chance above 100% mean?
Chasing Carrots said in a May 16, 2023 developer announcement that “Critical Hits and other chances can now exceed 100% and be applied several times at once.” In other words, excess chance can contribute to additional crit stacks rather than simply being wasted at a 100% ceiling. That announcement establishes the design principle, but it does not establish that every current ability handles those stacks or their secondary effects identically.

The Halls of Torment Wiki’s Game Mechanics page illustrates the idea with a calculation: 310% crit chance is represented as a 90% chance of three stacks and a 10% chance of four. This is an example of how to think about stacked chance, not a recommended target or a measured result from gameplay.
How do chance and crit bonus work together?
Crit chance and crit bonus are separate parts of the damage calculation. The Halls of Torment Wiki’s Stats reference distinguishes base crit chance, a chance multiplier, base crit bonus, and a crit bonus multiplier. The weapon or ability matters too: first establish whether it can crit and how its critical stats are calculated.
#1 Best Overall
The Game Mechanics page gives a simplified example using 50 normal damage and a 220% crit bonus. Under its 310% chance example, three stacks produce 380 damage (50 + 330) with 90% odds, while four stacks produce 490 damage (50 + 440) with 10% odds. This illustrates why chance cannot be interpreted without the bonus and normal damage. It is a reference-page calculation, not a universal output for every attack.
How should you choose between crit upgrades?
- Check the attack. Identify the weapon or ability you expect to carry your damage, and confirm that it can crit. Consider how often it hits; an upgrade affects the attacks to which its critical calculation applies.
- Read the critical stats as a set. Compare base chance and its multiplier with base crit bonus and its multiplier. Also account for the attack’s normal damage rather than judging an upgrade by its chance percentage alone.
- Compare the next upgrade’s marginal value. More chance may add opportunities for another stack; more crit bonus can increase the value of existing stacks. Normal or base damage, attack frequency, and the ability’s own effects are also relevant alternatives.
- Account for what you give up. A crit-focused choice competes with other damage investments. Which option wins depends on the character, available traits, stage, attack, and game version; the available references do not establish a universal breakpoint or ranking.
Do extra crit stacks trigger more on-crit effects?
Do not assume they do. A Steam Community discussion about game mechanics cautions that some effects may not apply additional effects for additional crit chance; it uses Sorceress and Transfixion as an example and suggests that 200% chance may be treated as one hit with increased damage. This is community feedback, not an official rule for every ability.
If your build depends on an “on crit” effect, inspect the current tooltip and verify the behavior for that specific trait or ability in your game version. Extra critical damage and extra effect-proc checks are separate questions.
Can lightning or effect synergies support a crit build?
Chasing Carrots’ May 16, 2023 announcement described Sorceress as focused on lightning and Chain Lightning, introduced Lightning damage that can cause Electrify, and noted that effects may stack. These interactions make lightning and effect behavior worth considering when evaluating a crit-oriented build. The announcement does not show that crit stacks trigger extra Electrify applications, nor does it establish Sorceress as the strongest current crit character.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
- The developer’s 2023 announcement supports the principle that critical chance can exceed 100% and apply multiple times.
- The community-maintained wiki offers a model for crit stacks and separates chance from bonus, but its present-day accuracy has not been independently validated here.
- The Steam discussion raises an ability-dependent caveat about additional on-crit effects; it is not a global, official mechanic.
- No current patch-specific comparison establishes an ideal crit chance, a best-in-slot build, or which crit investment outperforms other damage choices.
