How to Fix Slow Speeds on a Mesh Wi-Fi Network

Use consistent tests at the modem, main mesh router, and problem area to find whether slow speeds come from the service, a device, Wi-Fi conditions, or a satellite link.

To find out why a mesh Wi-Fi network is slow, compare speeds at several points in the same connection: wired directly to the modem or gateway, wired at the main mesh router, on Wi-Fi near that router, and in the problem area. The pattern shows whether to focus on the internet service, a cable or port, the client device, wireless conditions, or a satellite’s connection back to the mesh. Work through those checks before moving nodes or changing settings at random.

Start by finding where the speed drops

A mesh system has several links that can affect the result: the incoming connection, the modem or gateway, the main mesh router, the link between mesh nodes, and the Wi-Fi link to the client device. A slow result on a phone near a satellite does not, by itself, show which link is responsible. Compare measurements at multiple points so you can narrow down the cause.

Use the same device and speed-test service for each comparison, and keep the test conditions as similar as possible. Run more than one test at each location and record the results, the time, the device, and which node or connection was involved. Microsoft recommends recording a baseline before changing settings. A single test can vary with household traffic and other conditions, so look for a consistent pattern rather than treating one reading as definitive.

Take four comparison readings

  1. Direct wired test: If your setup permits, connect a computer by Ethernet directly to the modem or gateway and run a test. This helps separate the incoming service and modem from the mesh. Some gateways combine modem and router functions; in that case, use the closest available wired test that bypasses the mesh router.
  2. Main-router wired test: Connect the same computer by Ethernet to a LAN port on the main mesh router. Compare this result with the direct wired result. If the first is healthy but this one is low, check the router port, cable, link speed, and configuration.
  3. Main-router Wi-Fi test: Test on Wi-Fi near the main node. This helps identify whether the wireless connection itself is performing differently from the wired connection at the router.
  4. Problem-area Wi-Fi test: Test in the location where speed matters, using the same device. If the main-router Wi-Fi result is good but this one is consistently poor, investigate the client’s connection to its nearest node and that node’s backhaul.

Linksys and TP-Link recommend bypassing the mesh where possible to distinguish an upstream ISP or modem issue from mesh performance. The exact test you can perform depends on whether your modem, gateway, and mesh router are separate devices and on how your provider has configured them.

Use the results to choose the next check

Follow the first pattern that matches your results. “Good” means the result is reasonably consistent with your own wired baseline and service—not a universal Wi-Fi target. No single speed is established as the expected result for every client, mesh model, home, or service plan.

What you observe Where to investigate Next useful check
Direct wired speed is slow Incoming service, modem or gateway, cabling, or service plan Repeat the wired test; check the modem and cable, then share the results with your ISP.
Direct wired speed is good, but wired speed at the main mesh router is low Router port, Ethernet cable, link negotiation, or configuration Confirm the port capabilities and negotiated link speed; try a known-good cable if the current one may be damaged.
Main-router Wi-Fi is good, but one satellite area is slow Satellite placement, wireless backhaul, extra hops, or local obstruction Check the mesh app’s signal or connection test, then move the satellite and test again.
One device is slow while nearby devices are not Client hardware, supported band, software, or device-specific conditions Compare another device in the same spot and check what bands the affected client supports.
Speed falls during busy household periods Shared bandwidth or wireless contention Pause large transfers and repeat the test while household traffic is lighter.

If the wired test directly at the modem or gateway is slow, the mesh has not yet been isolated as the cause. Keep the test results and check the modem and incoming cable; then contact the ISP if the problem persists. If the direct wired result is healthy but the main-router wired result is not, work through the router’s physical connection before changing Wi-Fi settings.

Check the main router’s wired connection

A fast service can still be bottlenecked between the modem or gateway and the main mesh router. Check that the Ethernet ports at both ends support the rate your service requires and that the link negotiates at the expected speed. Port capabilities and app labels vary by model, so consult the documentation for your exact hardware rather than assuming every port supports the same rate.

Inspect the cable and ports

  • Make sure the Ethernet cable is fully seated at both ends and connected to the intended modem/gateway and router ports.
  • Look for a damaged cable or connector. Linksys recommends swapping a suspect cable as a diagnostic step.
  • Check the router and modem or gateway documentation for port speed, and use any status display the devices provide to confirm the link is not negotiating below the expected rate.
  • Retest after changing one item at a time. If you replace a suspect cable, compare results with the same device and test service.

A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one possible replacement to try when a cable is suspect or when you are assessing a wired connection. First verify the port speeds and what the mesh system supports. A new cable will not fix a slow incoming service, poor satellite placement, radio interference, or a limitation in the client device.

Rule out the client device and its Wi-Fi band

Different devices can produce different results on the same network. A client may not support the same maximum rates as the router, and its location, software, or chosen Wi-Fi band can affect the connection. When only one phone, laptop, or other device is slow, compare it with another client in the same place before changing the mesh.

Compare devices and locations

  1. Test the affected device close to the nearest mesh node. If the speed improves substantially there, distance or the intervening path may be part of the problem.
  2. Test another device beside it, using the same speed-test service. If the second device performs well, focus first on the affected client rather than assuming the whole mesh is slow.
  3. Restart the affected client and repeat the comparison. If its manufacturer provides a relevant network-driver or software update, consider that as a device-specific check.
  4. Check which band the device uses, if the mesh app or client shows it. Confirm that the device supports the band in question.

In suitable conditions, 5 GHz or 6 GHz can offer higher speeds, but neither is automatically faster in every room. Range, walls, compatibility, and the mesh system all matter. A higher-frequency connection that is weak through obstacles may not perform as well as a stronger connection on another supported band. Compare results where you actually use the network, not just beside the router.

Improve satellite placement and test the backhaul

A satellite has two jobs: connect upstream to the rest of the mesh and serve nearby client devices. Putting it at the far edge of an area with little or no usable signal can leave it with a poor upstream connection, even if it is physically close to the client. A node’s position should let it receive a dependable connection while extending coverage toward the problem area.

Move nodes in small, testable steps

  1. Open the mesh vendor’s app and look for its mesh test, node status, or signal-strength indicator. Menu names differ by system.
  2. Check the satellite’s connection to its upstream node before moving it. If the app reports a weak connection, test a position closer to the upstream node rather than extending it farther into the dead zone.
  3. Place nodes in open locations where possible. Avoid enclosing them in cabinets or placing them immediately beside thick walls, large metal objects, or likely sources of interference.
  4. After each move, run the app’s mesh test or review its signal indicator, then repeat the Wi-Fi test in the problem area. Change one node’s position at a time so you can tell whether the move helped.
  5. If the system has multiple satellites, check which node the client is using when that information is available. A client connecting to a more distant or less suitable node can complicate the comparison.

More nodes do not automatically mean faster speeds. Coverage and capacity depend on the particular system, layout, and connection between nodes. TP-Link’s Omada mesh troubleshooting guide warns that wireless clients connected to a mesh access point may perform worse than clients connected to the root access point, and that more wireless hops can increase interference or connection loss and affect speed-test results. That guidance describes the trade-off to check; it does not set a fixed speed penalty for every home mesh.

Consider wired backhaul when practical

With wireless backhaul, a satellite uses radio resources to communicate upstream while also serving client traffic. That shared wireless path can contribute to weaker results than a client connected near the main node. If your system supports Ethernet backhaul and your home wiring makes it practical, a wired connection between nodes is worth considering. Verify the supported topology and port speeds for your specific mesh model; connecting a cable does not guarantee that every system will use it as intended.

Reduce interference and competing traffic

Wi-Fi performance can change when other devices are using the connection or when nearby radio activity competes with it. To see whether congestion is involved, temporarily pause large downloads, cloud backups, 4K streams, and game downloads. Disconnect idle clients only if that is practical, then rerun the same test. If the result improves, repeat the test at a quieter time and consider scheduling large transfers outside the periods when reliable speed matters most.

Neighboring Wi-Fi networks and other radio sources, including microwaves and baby monitors, can affect wireless performance. If your mesh system provides channel optimization or a Wi-Fi analysis feature, use it to investigate congestion and follow the vendor’s guidance for that model. Channel controls and the amount of user control vary by system; avoid changing a setting without first checking what the vendor documents and noting the current setting so you can restore it if needed.

Restart and update the mesh carefully

A restart can help when a modem or node has stopped working as expected, but it is best done after recording baseline results so you can tell whether anything changed. Linksys recommends this sequence for its procedure: power off the modem and mesh nodes, wait 15 seconds, start the modem first, then the parent node, and then the remaining nodes. Allow the devices to reconnect before testing. This is a vendor-specific restart procedure, not a universal timing requirement for every mesh system.

Check your mesh vendor’s app or support page for available firmware updates. TP-Link also recommends current firmware in its mesh guidance. Follow the instructions for your model, and do not interrupt an update while it is in progress. After an update and reconnection, repeat the same tests at the same points in the network rather than relying on a different device or location.

Review advanced settings only when the results point there

Some mesh systems offer settings that can affect how traffic is handled, but labels and behavior vary. TP-Link’s Deco troubleshooting guide identifies QoS as one possible factor in slow speeds. If the tests suggest that prioritization or channel controls are relevant, consult the documentation for your system and review one setting at a time. Record the original value before changing it, then repeat the comparison that exposed the problem.

Do not change DNS or unrelated advanced settings as a generic speed fix. A setting change is useful only when it addresses a plausible cause and the results can be compared afterward. If your direct wired test is already slow, for example, a Wi-Fi setting on the satellite does not resolve the upstream issue shown by that test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact your ISP or mesh support

Contact your ISP when repeated direct wired tests remain slow and the modem, gateway, and incoming cable have been checked. Give the provider the service plan, the device and test service used, the wired results and times, and whether the test bypassed the mesh. That makes it easier to discuss the connection that is actually slow rather than attributing the result to Wi-Fi without evidence.

Seek model-specific mesh support when the direct wired result is healthy but the main router or a satellite remains slow after checking ports, cables, client differences, placement, traffic, restart, and available firmware. Include the mesh make and model, service plan, wired result at the modem or gateway, results at the main node and problem area, and whether the affected satellite uses wired or wireless backhaul. These details help distinguish a model-specific configuration or compatibility issue from a general signal problem.

Official support guidance from Linksys, TP-Link, and Microsoft available on October 13, 2026 informs the diagnostic steps above. Exact app menus, port capabilities, firmware, and wired-backhaul support depend on the model and may change. The right outcome is not a universal speed number; it is a set of comparable tests that identifies where your own connection loses performance.
