Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First find out whether the problem affects one device, one room, or the whole home. Compare a speed test near the router with one in the problem area, check another device, and—if practical—test over Ethernet. That pattern helps distinguish weak Wi-Fi coverage from a device issue or a slow connection coming into the home.
Start by identifying where the problem is
Wi-Fi performance depends on the device, its distance from the router or mesh point, the frequency band in use, physical barriers, and network traffic. Google outlines these factors in its slow-internet troubleshooting guidance. A poor result in one room may indicate weak coverage or a weak mesh link; slow results on several devices throughout the home point more toward the router, modem, or ISP connection.

- One device is slow: Compare it with another device in the same place. Older devices or devices with different Wi-Fi capabilities may reach lower speeds.
- One area is slow: Move the affected device closer to the router or nearest mesh point and test again. If performance improves, coverage or the connection between mesh points may be the issue.
- Several devices are slow everywhere: Check for bandwidth-heavy activity, restart the network equipment, and check for an ISP outage or service problem.
If your router or its app has a speed test, record the result and the time. A test measures a particular connection to a particular server, not the speed every app will receive. Google explains that its test measures data the router or primary Wi-Fi point can send and receive from Google’s servers; ISP or wider-network congestion can affect results, especially at busy times. Pause large downloads and other heavy network use where possible, and compare more than one result. See Google’s explanation of its speed test.

Try moving the router before changing settings or buying equipment. Place it in an open, central spot rather than inside a cabinet or behind a large obstacle. Walls, floors, concrete, brick, metal, mirrors, appliances, and furniture can weaken or block wireless signals. Google’s placement guidance covers router and mesh-point positioning.

With a mesh system, a device can have a strong connection to a nearby point even if that point has a weak connection back to the main router. If the system offers a mesh test, run it and follow its placement guidance. Move a weakly connected point closer to its upstream point, then test again. Google describes this approach in its mesh test guide.
Check interference and Wi-Fi settings
Nearby wireless networks can compete for airtime, and some electronics or building materials can contribute to poor reception. Use automatic channel selection if your router supports it. If problems continue, a manual channel change may be worth testing; compare results rather than assuming a particular channel will be better. Google covers competing networks, electronics, and channel selection in its wireless interference guidance.

- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Router controls vary by manufacturer and firmware, so use the equipment maker’s instructions. Apple recommends Auto channel selection where available. Its Wi-Fi router settings guidance recommends a 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz to help avoid performance and reliability problems near other networks and 2.4 GHz devices; for 5 GHz and 6 GHz, it recommends Auto or all widths.

If a modem/router and a separate router are both configured to route the same home network, check their setup: Apple warns that a network should have only one DHCP server, because multiple enabled servers can cause address conflicts. Change network settings only when you understand which device is responsible for routing and DHCP.

Restart the equipment and check the ISP connection
- Follow the manufacturer’s or ISP’s restart instructions. If the modem and router are separate devices, identify which one you are restarting and allow it to reconnect fully. Google says restarting a modem can fix some connection problems and occasionally improve slow connections; it is a troubleshooting step, not a diagnosis.
- Check whether multiple devices are still affected. Retest after the equipment reconnects, using the same device and location where possible.
- Check for an ISP outage or service issue. If several devices remain slow, contact your ISP and compare measured speeds with your subscribed service. The FCC’s Broadband Speed consumer guide recommends contacting the provider about unexpectedly low speeds or possible disruptions.
A new Wi-Fi router cannot make the incoming ISP connection faster than the service allows. If results are low only over Wi-Fi but stronger on a wired connection, focus on wireless coverage, interference, or the router rather than assuming the ISP is at fault.

| Mesh Wi-Fi system | Persistent weak coverage in multiple areas, or a larger home where additional points can maintain strong links. | Whether points can be positioned with strong connections to one another; whether Ethernet backhaul and the needed ports are available; device and ISP compatibility; app and management requirements. |
| Wi-Fi range extender | A localized dead zone where the extender can still receive a usable signal from the router. | Placement is critical: extending a weak signal does not make the incoming connection faster. Check compatibility, bands, setup, and whether its roaming behavior suits your devices. |
These are conditional options, not a ranking of specific products. Google identifies extenders as one way to rebroadcast a router signal, while also warning that weak mesh links can become speed bottlenecks; see its interference and extender guidance and mesh test guide.
