To fix a slow IDrive backup, first check the cause that matches your device: on Windows, review IDrive’s bandwidth throttle; on mobile, check the connection and whether the app can keep running in the background. Then verify that the files you want backed up are selected, accessible, and available when the backup runs. These checks can identify a bottleneck, but they cannot guarantee a particular transfer speed.
Start with the platform and the kind of backup
The documented desktop throttle steps below apply to IDrive’s Windows application. Mobile guidance applies to the IDrive mobile app. The available documentation does not establish equivalent throttle controls for Mac desktop, so do not assume the Windows menu exists there.

Also note whether this is the first backup or a later run, and whether the device is actively being used. Speed alone does not identify the cause: a first upload, a restrictive setting, weak connectivity, or unavailable source files can all affect how long a job takes.

Check bandwidth throttle and auto-pause
- Open the IDrive Windows application and go to Settings > Throttle > Bandwidth throttle.
- Check whether the throttle or auto-pause settings are limiting the backup. IDrive lists bandwidth throttle at 100% by default. When auto-pause is enabled, its documented defaults are 25% while the PC is in use and 100% while it is idle.
- If the current limit is deliberately leaving bandwidth for other work, decide whether you can raise or remove it while the backup runs. A less restrictive setting may let IDrive use more available bandwidth, but does not guarantee a faster completion time.
These percentages describe configuration defaults, not measured transfer speeds. IDrive’s Windows FAQ does not state a publication date for this guidance; it was accessed on October 7, 2026. Read IDrive’s Windows online-backup FAQ.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Inspect CPU throttle only on supported Windows versions
In the same Settings > Throttle area, check CPU throttle if your system supports it. IDrive lists the default as 100% and says this control is available on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 or later. Do not apply this menu instruction to other platforms or assume that changing it will resolve every slowdown.
Confirm the backup set and source access
- Make sure the intended folders are selected and are not excluded.
- Confirm the source drive is connected and the files are readable when the backup runs.
- If you back up a mapped drive, check that it is authenticated and accessible to IDrive.
After correcting the selection or access issue, use Backup Now to start an immediate run. IDrive documents this option for running a backup after changing the backup set. See the Windows application FAQ for backup-set and mapped-drive details.

- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Check the schedule if only scheduled runs are affected
Review the scheduled backup settings and make sure the selected days and start time fit when the computer and source drives are available. IDrive’s scheduler supports a start time with selected days of the week or a daily schedule. If an immediate run works but a scheduled one does not, focus on schedule timing and source availability rather than changing hardware. IDrive’s Windows FAQ explains scheduled backups.
Fix a slow IDrive backup on a phone or tablet
Check connection, battery, permissions, and background access
- Check that the internet connection is stable; IDrive identifies weak internet as a cause of slow mobile backup.
- Check the device’s battery level and confirm IDrive has the permissions it needs.
- Review device settings that restrict background activity or optimize battery use, and allow IDrive to continue working if appropriate for your device.
For a large upload, keep IDrive open and connect the device to a charger. IDrive warns that closing the app may pause an upload. Exact battery and background-setting labels vary by device. See IDrive’s iOS and Android FAQ.

Account for what the app uploads on each run
After the initial mobile backup, photos, videos, and music are backed up incrementally. Contacts, calendar, SMS, call logs, and other documents are re-uploaded on each run, according to IDrive. A later backup may therefore take a different amount of time depending on the data categories included; a repeated upload of those categories is not, by itself, proof that the connection is faulty. IDrive’s mobile FAQ describes its backup behavior by data type.

The documented guidance does not establish a router, Ethernet adapter, or external drive as a general fix for slow IDrive cloud transfers. Network equipment may matter if your local connection is the bottleneck, but first check the app’s settings and source access. An external or local drive changes the backup destination; it does not, by itself, speed up a cloud upload.

If these checks do not explain the slowdown, record your platform and IDrive app version, whether the run is initial or recurring, what data is selected, and whether the device remains available throughout the job. That information helps distinguish an app-setting issue from connection, scheduling, or source-access problems without assuming a cause from the speed alone.
