Usually, no—but it depends on your Schlage lock. Encode and Encode Plus have WiFi built in, while Connect uses Z-Wave Plus. The separate Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter is only for the older Sense deadbolt, and even a Sense owner may not need it if a compatible Apple home hub is already connected to home WiFi.

These are different connection systems, not interchangeable versions of one adapter. The Sense WiFi Adapter is not a universal accessory for Schlage locks.

When a Schlage Sense owner needs an adapter
The Sense deadbolt uses Bluetooth. If you want remote access and do not already have a compatible Apple home hub connected to your home WiFi, Schlage describes the Sense WiFi Adapter as the bridge that connects the lock for remote access. It pairs with the Sense deadbolt and app and plugs into your home WiFi.

Schlage says an iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod already connected to home WiFi can make the adapter unnecessary for this Sense setup. The adapter itself is not compatible with Apple HomeKit. Those statements concern different parts of the setup: an Apple home hub may provide the route for remote access, but that does not make the adapter a HomeKit-compatible device.

If you only need to use the lock nearby over Bluetooth, the adapter’s remote-access function may not be necessary. Decide based on whether you need to control the lock when away from home and whether your existing setup already supports that access.
Why Encode and Encode Plus do not need it
Schlage Encode and Encode Plus have built-in WiFi and provide remote access through the Schlage Home app. Their WiFi is part of the lock, so adding the Sense adapter is not the way to connect either model.

If you are replacing a Sense lock rather than adding an accessory, Encode and Encode Plus are complete lock options with built-in WiFi—not adapters for an existing Sense deadbolt.

Schlage Connect uses Z-Wave Plus, not the Sense adapter’s WiFi connection. For connected control, it works with a compatible home automation or security system. Buying the Sense adapter will not turn a Connect lock into a WiFi lock.

Check your model before buying anything
- Identify the lock. Check the model name or number on the lock and in its app. Do not choose an accessory based only on the Schlage name.
- Decide whether remote access is the goal. If you only need local operation, you may not need an added connection device.
- Match the connectivity. Sense uses Bluetooth and may use its specific adapter; Encode and Encode Plus have built-in WiFi; Connect uses Z-Wave Plus and a compatible system.
- For Sense, check for an Apple home hub. Schlage identifies an iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod connected to home WiFi as a setup that can make the adapter unnecessary.
- Verify any Sense adapter listing carefully. Schlage says Sense and the Sense WiFi Adapter were discontinued in July 2020. The official information does not establish present retail availability, so confirm the listing’s exact compatibility, condition, and availability before buying.

- Sense: You may need the model-specific Sense WiFi Adapter for remote access if you lack the qualifying Apple home hub setup. The Sense line and adapter were discontinued in July 2020.
- Encode or Encode Plus: No separate Sense adapter; WiFi is built in.
