RustDesk can be a better-value alternative to a TeamViewer subscription if you are comfortable managing your own remote-access setup. Its open-source clients and server let you self-host ID and relay services, choose where deployment infrastructure runs, and adjust session settings without paying for the OSS software. But TeamViewer is not subscription-only: it offers free personal, non-commercial use, while RustDesk hosting and organizational features can still carry costs.
What “free” means for RustDesk and TeamViewer
RustDesk’s client and Server OSS are open source. The server provides ID and rendezvous/signaling through hbbs and relay through hbbr; you can run it on infrastructure you control. The software has no license fee, but a cloud server, bandwidth, setup time, and ongoing maintenance may cost money. RustDesk also sells Server Pro for organizations that want additional administration features.

TeamViewer, meanwhile, says its free license is for personal, non-commercial use. Its official feature overview lists a maximum of three managed devices and file transfer one file at a time. A paid plan is generally relevant when your use is commercial or you need plan-specific capabilities; the claim that TeamViewer always requires a subscription is too broad. TeamViewer’s free-versus-paid feature overview explains the distinction.

1. An open-source server you can host yourself
RustDesk Server OSS gives you the option to operate the ID/signaling and relay components rather than relying on a vendor-managed service. That can be attractive if you have the skills and infrastructure to deploy it, and want to control how the service is configured and maintained. The trade-off is operational responsibility: you handle networking, configuration, updates, and availability.

RustDesk recommends Docker as an installation route and says a basic cloud server’s minimum configuration may be sufficient. Its documentation lists common core ports as TCP 21114–21119 and UDP 21116, although the ports needed depend on how you deploy and use the service. Check the current RustDesk Server installation guide before opening firewall rules. Relay traffic varies with screen resolution and updates, so estimate network use for your own workload rather than assuming a fixed bandwidth requirement.
2. More control over ID, relay, and deployment infrastructure
Self-hosting lets you decide where RustDesk’s ID and relay infrastructure runs and manage the deployment on systems you operate. That is a meaningful control option for people with specific infrastructure or data-handling requirements. It is not, by itself, proof that RustDesk is categorically more secure than TeamViewer: security also depends on configuration, access controls, updates, and how the deployment is administered.

RustDesk describes peer-to-peer connections with end-to-end encryption based on NaCl. Those capabilities do not remove the need to secure the server, limit access appropriately, and keep software current. The RustDesk documentation describes the product and its deployment options.
3. Clients across desktop and mobile platforms
RustDesk documents clients for Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, Android, iOS, and the web. Its overview also describes support for software and hardware codecs, giving users connection options across different devices. Platform coverage does not mean every device can be controlled in both directions: RustDesk’s client documentation specifically notes that iOS cannot be controlled remotely. Check the client documentation for platform-specific behavior.

4. A lightweight Windows start and configurable sessions
RustDesk says Windows use does not require installation or administrative privileges to launch. If a task needs elevated permissions, elevation can be enabled locally or remotely when required. That can make an occasional support session easier to start, though it does not mean every support task can be completed without elevation.
The client exposes settings for security permissions, network and server configuration, display, clipboard synchronization, audio, recording, and service control. These options are useful when you want to tailor session behavior or connect through a server you manage; consult the RustDesk client guide for the available controls.

When TeamViewer may be the more practical choice
TeamViewer’s paid commercial plans are designed for business use and vary by licensed user, connection channel or concurrent connection, managed-device allowance, and other features. Availability and pricing can depend on country and selected plan, so compare the terms shown for your location rather than assuming one price or feature set applies everywhere. Its plans and pricing page outlines the current options.

For assigned devices, TeamViewer’s Remote Access page highlights unattended access, Wake-on-LAN, black screen, and quick file transfer. A managed commercial service may be preferable if you need those capabilities or would rather not deploy, secure, and maintain a server yourself. RustDesk’s Server Pro is a separate self-hosted option with features such as a web console, API, OIDC/LDAP, two-factor authentication, device management, access controls, logs, and multiple relays. Its pricing page says those plans are for self-hosting, not a SaaS subscription. See RustDesk pricing and the Server Pro documentation.
TeamViewer’s pricing FAQ describes annual subscriptions that renew automatically every 12 months unless the customer terminates at least 28 days before the term ends. Because contract terms may change and can depend on the purchase, verify the terms in the current offer and agreement before subscribing. TeamViewer licensing and pricing support provides its licensing information.
How to decide between RustDesk and TeamViewer
- Check whether your use is personal or commercial. TeamViewer’s free license is limited to personal, non-commercial use. If you need commercial access, compare paid plans with RustDesk’s OSS setup and any Pro requirements.
- Decide whether you will run a server. If you can deploy and maintain RustDesk Server OSS, its no-license-fee software may fit. If you do not want that work, a managed service may be worth paying for.
- Consider how much infrastructure control you need. Self-hosting gives you control over where ID and relay services run, but that control also makes you responsible for operations and security.
- List the business features you actually need. Central device management, identity integration, logs, support, or unattended-access functions may make a paid plan or RustDesk Server Pro more suitable than OSS alone.
The “worst deal” claim only holds for readers who qualify for neither TeamViewer’s free personal tier nor a need for its managed commercial features, and who are willing to take on the work and costs of self-hosting. For technically capable users who value infrastructure control, RustDesk’s free OSS route can make a paid TeamViewer subscription unnecessary; for others, the managed service may justify its price.
