A slow PS5 or Xbox download is usually caused by Wi‑Fi conditions, another device using your connection, a platform-service slowdown, or an ISP problem—not the console’s advertised internet speed. Start with a controlled test: run the console’s network test, pause every other download or stream, and download one game while the console is idle. Repeat the same download over Ethernet if you can. A faster wired result points to Wi‑Fi or router congestion; an equally slow wired result points toward the platform service, your ISP, or the game’s own server.
This guide shows the exact PS5 settings for wired connections and Rest Mode, explains how to use Xbox’s built-in diagnostics without relying on undocumented menu names, and gives a decision path for connection failures, stalled installs, and downloads that never reach the speed you expect.

Run a controlled download test first
Changing DNS servers or buying networking hardware before measuring the problem can hide the real cause. Use one repeatable test so each change has a clear result.

Pause downloads on phones, computers, and other consoles. Stop 4K streaming, cloud backups, video calls, and large uploads for the duration of the test.
- Check the platform service. Look at the official PlayStation or Xbox service-status page for an incident affecting games, downloads, or account services. A service-side slowdown cannot be fixed by changing settings at home.
- Run the console’s network test. Record whether it reports a successful internet connection and note the measured download speed, NAT result, and any error message. Treat the number as a snapshot, not a guarantee of the speed shown by your ISP plan.
- Download one title while the console is idle. Pause the transfer once, resume it, and watch whether the rate stabilizes. Do not compare a tiny patch with a 100 GB game; server load and file size vary.
- Repeat over Ethernet. Connect the console directly to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable, disable or disconnect Wi‑Fi if the console requires that choice, and repeat the same test. This isolates the wireless link from the rest of the path.
If the wired test is clearly faster, concentrate on Wi‑Fi placement, interference, band selection, or router capacity. If wired and wireless are similarly slow, investigate platform status, the ISP connection, and the game’s servers before buying equipment.

Fix a slow PS5 download
Set up and test a wired connection
Sony’s connectivity guidance places both wired and wireless setup under Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Choose the wired connection when the console is connected to the router, then run the network test again. Sony’s error guidance says, “If possible, connect to the Internet using a wired connection.” Ethernet removes radio interference and distance from the test, but it does not bypass an overloaded PlayStation service or a slow ISP link.
Improve PS5 Wi‑Fi when Ethernet is not practical
Move the PS5 closer to the router and remove cabinets, walls, and other obstructions between them. Keep the console in an open, ventilated position rather than inside a closed media unit. If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, test both from the PS5’s internet-connection screen: 5 GHz is often faster at short range, while 2.4 GHz can travel farther through walls. Use the band that produces the steadier download in your room, not the one that sounds faster in theory.
Schedule large downloads when fewer household devices are active. A dual-band router or mesh system can improve coverage when the wired test is fast but the PS5’s room has a weak signal; it cannot increase the speed purchased from your ISP or remove a PlayStation-side outage.

Allow downloads in Rest Mode
Rest Mode downloads work only when the PS5 is allowed to keep its network connection. Enable the setting at Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet.
Automatic updates are a separate control. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, then enable Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode, as appropriate. Sony notes that Auto-Download can be used when you want to keep a suspended game. If Stay Connected to the Internet is off, the console cannot fetch the update while sleeping, even if automatic updates are enabled.
When a PS5 download pauses or crawls
- Pause the download, wait a few seconds, and resume it once. Repeatedly toggling pause can make diagnosis harder.
- Close a game that is running and leave the console at the home screen during the test.
- Check that another game, update, or cloud-synchronization task is not consuming the connection.
- Restart the PS5 and router, then run the network test before starting the download again.
- If every title remains slow on both Ethernet and Wi‑Fi, check PlayStation service status and compare the PS5 test with another device on the same router.
Fix a slow Xbox download
Use Xbox’s built-in network diagnostics
Xbox Support maintains a dedicated Troubleshoot slow game or app downloads on Xbox One guide, along with separate guidance for wired connections and connection-speed troubleshooting. Open the console’s Network settings and run its connection and speed tests, then follow the slow-download flow in the official support guide. Xbox menu labels can change with dashboard updates, so use the current labels shown on your console rather than an old screenshot or an undocumented command.

Compare wired and wireless results
Connect the Xbox directly to the router and repeat the same download with competing traffic stopped. A faster Ethernet result identifies the wireless segment as the likely bottleneck. Improve placement, test the router’s available bands, or add coverage with a better router or mesh system. If Ethernet is no faster, the console’s Wi‑Fi is unlikely to be the main cause; continue with service-status and ISP checks instead.
Follow the slow-download escalation path
- Pause and resume the title once, then leave the Xbox idle while it downloads.
- Stop other game updates, app downloads, streams, and household transfers.
- Restart the Xbox and router, run the Network settings test, and record the result.
- Compare the Xbox result with a phone or computer connected to the same router.
- Check Xbox service status and the official slow-download and connection-speed troubleshooting pages.
- Contact your ISP or Xbox Support if wired tests remain slow while other devices and the service-status page do not explain the problem.
Do not assume a particular Xbox speed target or a guaranteed percentage improvement from Ethernet. Microsoft’s support flow helps isolate the fault, but actual rates vary with the ISP plan, Wi‑Fi conditions, server load, and the game being downloaded.
Use the results to locate the bottleneck
| Test result | Most likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi is slow; Ethernet is substantially faster | Signal loss, interference, poor band choice, or router congestion | Move the console, remove obstructions, test the other band, reduce competing traffic, or improve coverage with a router or mesh system. |
| Ethernet and Wi‑Fi are both slow on one console | Platform service, ISP path, router fault, or a title-specific server issue | Check service status, reboot router and console, compare another device, and escalate to the ISP or platform support if the pattern persists. |
| Only one game or patch is slow | Load on that game’s content server or a problematic transfer | Pause/resume once, retry later, and check whether other titles download normally before changing network hardware. |
| All devices are slow | ISP outage, line problem, or router-wide congestion | Run the ISP’s diagnostic, reboot the router, and report the measured wired result to the ISP. |
| Other devices are fast but both console tests are slow | Console configuration, platform service, or console-specific fault | Verify the Ethernet cable and router port, check platform status, and contact platform support with the recorded test results. |
A speed test measures a moment in time. Rates can drop when a popular release overloads content servers, and a larger game can take longer even at the same Mbps because it contains more data. No authoritative general percentage gain, Mbps target, or average time saved applies to every PS5 or Xbox download.

Reduce home-network congestion without guessing
Identify hidden traffic
Cloud photo synchronization, operating-system updates, security-camera uploads, and another console downloading in the background can consume upload or download capacity. Temporarily pause these jobs while testing. If the game accelerates immediately, the fix is scheduling or traffic management rather than a console repair.
Choose the right connection path
Use Ethernet whenever a practical cable run exists. A Cat6 cable is suitable for a normal home gigabit connection and is inexpensive compared with replacing networking equipment. Connect it directly to the main router for the cleanest comparison; a slow powerline adapter or an overloaded wireless extender can reintroduce the same bottleneck.

When cabling is impossible, place the router centrally and keep it elevated and unobstructed. A mesh node should be close enough to the main router to receive a strong signal; placing a node in the dead zone simply extends a weak connection. Configure the console on the band that remains stable in its actual room.

Reboot in a useful order
- Stop the console download.
- Power off the PS5 or Xbox completely rather than leaving a game suspended.
- Unplug the router and modem or gateway for about 30 seconds, then power the modem or gateway first and wait for it to reconnect.
- Power the router, wait for its status lights and Wi‑Fi to return, and then start the console.
- Run the network test before resuming the game download.
This clears transient router states; it does not repair a damaged cable, an ISP line fault, or a platform outage.
Handle stalled downloads and failed installs safely
A transfer that repeatedly stalls or fails can involve corrupted cached data as well as connectivity. Use the cache-clearing or download-repair procedure documented for your platform or the game publisher. Do not casually delete saved data: save files and downloaded content are separate, and removing the wrong item can erase progress.
Before clearing anything, note the title, update version, error code, and whether another game downloads normally. Restart once, retry on the same connection, and then follow the documented cache process if the failure recurs. If the install fails after a complete download, check available storage and the platform’s error guidance; a network-speed tweak will not fix a full drive or damaged install package.

When to contact support
Escalate after you have a repeatable result: the console model, wired or wireless connection, network-test values, error code, title and update size, time of day, and whether another device is fast. Give the ISP the wired measurement and ask whether there is an outage, line error, or modem signal problem. Give PlayStation or Xbox Support the platform test and service-status context. This evidence prevents the conversation from stopping at generic advice to restart the router.
There is no universal guaranteed speed increase from Ethernet, Rest Mode, a different Wi‑Fi band, or a new router. Those changes help only when they address the measured bottleneck. The reliable method is to isolate one variable, repeat the same download, and keep the fix that produces a sustained improvement.
