Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your Skullcandy headphones won’t charge or turn on, first identify the exact model and whether you have over-ear headphones or earbuds that charge inside a case. Skullcandy uses different ports, indicators, controls and charging instructions across products, so no single button sequence or charging time is universal. After identifying the model, reconnect power, inspect the port or charging contacts, test a compatible cable and power source, and follow that model’s product-help instructions.
Start by identifying the Skullcandy model
Do not begin with a reset or assume that every Skullcandy product uses USB-C. Find the model name on the headband, earcup, earbud case, product label or original packaging. If the headphones still appear in a phone’s Bluetooth list, the saved device name may also help, but confirm it against the physical product or its manual.

Next, classify the device:
| Device type | What receives power | Checks that matter most |
|---|---|---|
| Over-ear or on-ear headphones | The headphone itself, usually through a port on an earcup | Port obstruction, plug seating, cable, power source, charging indicator and model-specific input limit |
| True wireless earbuds | The charging case, which then charges the earbuds through internal contacts | Case battery, earbud seating, accessible contacts, ear gels, case cable and case indicator |
Open the matching Skullcandy product-help page for the model before substituting a cable, attempting a reset or interpreting an LED. The official material covers representative products rather than every model, and port type, indicator behavior, controls, maximum input and charge duration can differ.
Fast checks for any model
- Disconnect and reconnect power. Remove the cable from both the power source and the headphones or case, then reconnect it firmly at both ends.
- Wait several seconds. Skullcandy notes on reviewed models that a charging indication may take a few seconds to appear after power is connected. A brief delay is not proof that charging has failed.
- Inspect the charging opening. Look for lint, dust or another obstruction in the port. Use only a gentle, dry external inspection; do not put liquid or a metal object into the port.
- Check the fit of the plug. The connector should be fully inserted and not sitting at an angle. For reviewed over-ear guidance, place the headphones on a flat surface so the connector can sit flush.
- Try a known-working, compatible cable and power source. A cable can fail even when it looks normal. Test one that you know charges another compatible device, while still following the Skullcandy model’s own power requirements.
- Leave the device connected long enough to observe it. If the battery was deeply depleted, the indicator may not appear immediately. Do not infer a universal required charge time because Skullcandy does not use one charge duration for every model.
How to troubleshoot over-ear Skullcandy headphones
1. Check the port and connector
With the headphones disconnected, examine the charging port under good light. Debris can prevent the plug from reaching the electrical contacts. Do not scrape inside the port with a pin, paper clip or other metal tool, and do not pour cleaner into it. If the opening looks damaged, loose or pushed inward, stop forcing the plug; repeated insertion can worsen a mechanical fault.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reconnect the cable until it is fully seated. If the model’s official instructions say to charge on a flat surface, follow that arrangement rather than letting the cable pull the earcup sideways. A connector that appears inserted but is not flush may not make reliable contact.
2. Verify the cable and power source
Use a different compatible cable and a power source that works with another device. If the headphones charge with the second cable, the original cable is the likely problem. If neither cable produces an indicator, continue with the model-specific checks instead of repeatedly buying cables.
Several reviewed over-ear product-help pages recommend a source no greater than 18 watts (5 volts/3.6 amps). That is a recommendation for those named models, not a universal limit for all Skullcandy headphones. Check your model’s page before applying it. If the page specifies a lower or different input requirement, follow that requirement.
3. Observe the charging indicator
Reconnect power and watch for the model’s expected light or other charging signal after a few seconds. The color, location and meaning of an indicator vary by product. A missing light can indicate a bad cable, an obstructed or damaged port, an unsuitable source, a fully depleted battery or an internal fault; it does not identify one cause by itself.
If an indicator appears but the headphones still will not turn on, keep the device connected while checking the model’s power control. Do not hold random buttons based on instructions for another Skullcandy product. Button locations, hold times and confirmation sounds are model-specific.
4. Check whether the failure is power or pairing
A headphone that powers on but does not connect has a different problem from one that shows no light or response. First establish whether any startup sound, LED or Bluetooth visibility appears. If there is evidence of power, use the model’s pairing instructions. If there is no charging indication and no startup response after the cable and source checks, treat it as a charging or hardware issue rather than assuming that pairing is the cause.
How to troubleshoot Skullcandy earbuds and their charging case
1. Charge the case first
Earbuds do not normally receive power directly from the external cable. The case must have enough battery to recognize that the buds are seated and deliver charge through its internal contacts. Skullcandy’s Mod guidance notes that a completely drained case can prevent the earbuds from recognizing that they are in the charging slots.

Connect the case to a compatible power source and allow the case indicator time to respond. If the case has no light, repeat the port, cable and power-source checks on the case itself. Do not judge the earbuds’ battery state until the case has had an opportunity to charge.
2. Reseat both earbuds
Remove each earbud and place it back into its designated slot. The earbud should sit fully down, with the charging contacts aligned. Close and reopen the lid if the model uses a lid sensor, then check the case indicator or the model’s documented charging signal.
On models with removable ear gels, make sure a gel has not shifted and is preventing the earbud from sitting low enough to contact the case. Push Play Active guidance specifically checks the ear gels, contacts, cable and case charge when the buds do not charge.
3. Inspect the accessible contacts
Look at the metal charging contacts on the earbuds and in the case for visible obstruction. Keep the inspection dry and gentle. Do not use a metal pick or liquid inside the case. If a contact is bent, recessed or visibly damaged, stop pressing the earbud into the slot and contact Skullcandy support.

If the buds show no response outside the case, that alone does not prove they are defective. They may be fully depleted, or the case may not be delivering power. Test the case with a known-working compatible cable and suitable source, then reseat the buds after the case has charged.
Connector and cable guidance
USB-C is model-specific. Skullcandy specifies USB-C for Grom Wireless, but that does not establish USB-C for every Skullcandy product. Confirm the port on your exact model before ordering a replacement cable. A cable is a sensible troubleshooting substitute only when the existing cable may be faulty; it cannot repair a broken port, failed battery or damaged internal electronics.
Do not force a connector that does not match the opening. A plug that fits loosely, stops before reaching the end or requires unusual pressure is not a safe match. Check the model’s product page or guide for the specified connector and input requirements.

Avoid common troubleshooting mistakes
- Do not assume the light is universal. A color that means charging on one model may mean pairing, a low battery or a completed charge on another. Use the exact guide for interpretation.
- Do not apply another model’s button sequence. A factory reset or power command can clear pairings without addressing a physical charging fault, and the controls may be in a different location.
- Do not keep forcing a loose port. If the plug only works when held at an angle, the issue may be mechanical rather than a bad cable.
- Do not buy a cable solely because it is USB-C. First confirm that your product has a USB-C port and that the cable is suitable for its stated charging requirements.
- Do not keep charging a visibly damaged battery. Heat, swelling, a burnt smell or a damaged enclosure warrants disconnection and professional support, not repeated charging tests.
- Do not judge earbuds without checking the case. A dead case can make both buds appear faulty, while a shifted ear gel or blocked contact can affect only one side.
These precautions also prevent a useful comparison from becoming misleading: an over-ear headphone is tested at its own charging port, while an earbud is tested through the case and its contact system.
When a replacement cable is worth trying
A replacement cable is reasonable when the current cable is frayed, intermittently connected or unable to charge another compatible device. Borrow or test a known-working cable before purchasing one. Match the connector and follow the model’s input instructions; do not treat a cable purchase as a repair for a loose port, worn battery or failed charging electronics.
If a second compatible cable and suitable source behave exactly like the first, further cable swaps have diminishing value. Document what you tested, including whether an indicator appeared after several seconds, and move to Skullcandy support rather than spending repeatedly on accessories.
When a reset is appropriate—and when it is not
Skullcandy distinguishes between a factory-default reset and a hardware reset:
- Factory-default reset: clears paired devices and settings.
- Hardware reset: forces a firmware reboot.
These operations address software or connection-state problems. They are not established as a universal cure for a depleted, damaged or failed battery, a blocked port or a broken charging circuit. A reset can also erase pairing information, so do not perform one merely because the charging light has not appeared.
If the headphones show signs of a frozen connection state—such as powering on but refusing to respond normally—use the exact reset procedure in the product guide. Skullcandy’s reset guidance gives general button-hold information but directs users to the specific guide for button locations and confirmation cues. Because controls vary, do not apply a sequence from a different model.
Use this decision path after the first checks
| What you observe | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| No light or response on over-ear headphones | Reconnect firmly, inspect the port, test a known-working compatible cable and source, and verify the model’s input limit. |
| Light appears after a delay | Leave the device connected and follow the model’s documented charging and power-on instructions. |
| Case has no light and earbuds do not charge | Charge the case, test its cable and source, then reseat both earbuds. |
| Case charges but one or both earbuds do not | Check earbud seating, removable ear gels and accessible contacts for obstruction. |
| Connector will not sit flush or port feels loose | Stop forcing it and contact support; a cable swap will not fix a mechanically damaged port. |
| Headphones power on but pairing is stuck | Use the exact model’s pairing or reset instructions; do not treat a reset as a battery repair. |
Signs the problem may require service
Contact Skullcandy when the correct cable and power source produce no indicator after the port or case checks, when a connector or contact is physically damaged, or when the product repeatedly loses charging contact. Also seek support if the headphones become unusually hot, smell burnt, swell or show other signs of battery damage; disconnect them and do not continue charging a visibly damaged product.

Warranty and replacement expectations
Skullcandy’s warranty policy describes a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects for authentic products, with valid proof of purchase required. Eligibility depends on the policy terms, purchase source and country process; a charging failure is not automatically covered.
Recommended Free Tools
Under the policy, Skullcandy may replace the product or provide store warranty credit at its discretion. An exact replacement is not guaranteed because models, colors and styles change. Check the current policy and follow the support process before paying for a replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to have ready when contacting support
- The exact model name and whether it is an over-ear headphone or earbuds with a case.
- The charging-port type and the cable used.
- Whether any indicator appears, and how long you waited after connecting power.
- Whether you tested another compatible cable and power source.
- For earbuds, whether the case charges and whether both buds sit fully in their slots.
- Proof of purchase if you want the warranty team to assess eligibility.
This information helps support distinguish a cable or power-source problem from a port, contact, battery or firmware issue without asking you to repeat unrelated reset procedures.
Bottom line
Identify the model first, then match the troubleshooting to the device type. For over-ear headphones, focus on a clean port, a fully seated connector, a known-working compatible cable and the model’s power limit. For earbuds, charge the case, reseat the buds and check contacts and ear gels. USB-C, 18-watt input guidance, indicator behavior and reset controls are not universal across Skullcandy products. If those model-appropriate checks fail, use Skullcandy support and review the one-year limited-warranty terms rather than assuming a reset or replacement cable will fix hardware failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my Skullcandy headphones take a few seconds to show a charging light?
On reviewed Skullcandy models, the charging indication can take a few seconds after the cable is connected. Reconnect the cable firmly, wait briefly, and then check the model’s documented indicator behavior. A short delay alone does not prove the battery or cable has failed.

What does the 18-watt charging limit mean?
Several reviewed over-ear product-help pages recommend a source no greater than 18 watts, listed as 5 volts/3.6 amps. This figure applies to those named models, not automatically to every Skullcandy headphone. Follow the charging limit on your own model’s page.
Why do my Skullcandy earbuds not charge even though they are in the case?
The case may be completely drained, an earbud may not be sitting fully in its slot, a removable ear gel may be blocking contact, or an accessible contact may be obstructed. Charge the case first, reseat both earbuds and inspect the contacts gently without liquid or metal tools.
Should I reset Skullcandy headphones that will not turn on?
Not as a first step. A factory-default reset clears paired devices and settings, while a hardware reset forces a firmware reboot. Neither is established as a universal repair for a depleted battery, blocked port or failed charging circuit. Use a reset only when the symptoms suggest a frozen connection state and follow the exact model guide.
What if a replacement cable does not fix the problem?
If a known-working compatible cable and suitable source produce the same result, stop repeatedly swapping accessories. Inspect the port or case contacts, record whether any indicator appears after several seconds, and contact Skullcandy support. A cable cannot repair a loose port, failed battery or damaged internal electronics.
Is a Skullcandy charging failure covered by warranty?
Skullcandy describes a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects for authentic products and requires valid proof of purchase. Eligibility depends on the current policy, purchase source and country process. Skullcandy may replace the product or issue store warranty credit at its discretion, and an exact like-for-like replacement is not guaranteed.
What information will Skullcandy support need?
Have the exact model name, device type, connector, cable and power source ready. Note whether an indicator appears and how long you waited, and for earbuds record whether the case charges and both buds sit correctly. Keep proof of purchase available if you want warranty eligibility assessed.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact Skullcandy model first. Check the port, cable and power source for over-ear headphones; charge the case and reseat contacts for earbuds. Model-specific limits, connectors, indicators and resets matter. If those checks fail, contact Skullcandy and review the one-year warranty terms.
