Identify the failure before changing anything

- Update Windows. Install pending Windows updates and restart before testing. A reboot clears a partially updated graphics or runtime component and gives Steam a clean session.
- Close overlays and controller utilities. Exit overlay software, remappers, virtual-gamepad tools, capture programs, and other applications that can inject into a game or create a second controller entry. Leave Steam running, but do not add another variable while diagnosing.
- Check that Steam has finished updating Shadow Tactics. Open the Steam Downloads view and wait for the game’s update to complete. Steam’s update history records a fix for startup errors that presented only a black screen, so testing an older build can reproduce a problem already addressed by a patch.
- Run one unmodified launch. Start the game once after the baseline cleanup. If it fails, close Steam completely, relaunch Steam, and continue with the repair steps rather than repeatedly starting the game; each start can overwrite the diagnostic log.
2. Repair the installation and required runtime

Do not assume that a newer Visual C++ package replaces this older runtime; the documented remedy calls for the 2010 x86 component.
Why these two repairs come first
Verification addresses missing or altered game assets, while the x86 runtime supplies libraries the executable expects before rendering its first frame. Neither procedure changes the saved campaign state, so they are appropriate before any state-reset step.

3. Skip the startup movies
Some black-screen failures occur while the opening movies are being initialized. For versions covered by the documented 1.4.4 guidance and later builds that retain the option, add -skipmovies to Steam’s launch options.

- In Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find Launch Options and enter
-skipmoviesexactly, including the leading hyphen. - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
The developer’s later colored-screen guidance also points players to -skipmovies. This option bypasses the movie sequence; it does not repair a damaged save or prove that your graphics driver is healthy. If the game reaches the menu with the option enabled, leave it in place while you complete a normal session, then remove it later to test whether the original movie path was the trigger.
4. Reset only the corrupted game state, safely
Deleting the entire save directory is unnecessary and can remove campaign progress. The targeted procedure is to back up the complete user folder and remove gameState.save only if it exists.
- Exit the game and Steam. If Steam Cloud is active, note its synchronization status before changing a file.
- In File Explorer, go to

userfolder to a separate location, such as a folder on your desktop or another drive. Keep this backup untouched. - Open
usergameState_00. IfgameState.saveis present, move it to the backup location or rename it instead of permanently deleting it. - Start the game and test the previously failing launch. The game can create a fresh state file if the old one was the cause.
This is a state reset, not a general “delete all saves” instruction. Steam Cloud can synchronize a copy back to the computer or present a conflict, so review the cloud choice carefully and preserve the local backup before accepting a replacement. If the game starts after the reset, keep the backup until you have confirmed that your campaign files and settings are intact.
5. Address black, purple, and colored screens
Understand the DirectX initialization issue
In the developer’s colored-screen guidance, logs from some systems with DX10 or DX11-capable graphics cards showed the game initializing DirectX 9 instead of DirectX 10/11. That mismatch can leave the window on a solid purple or otherwise unusable screen even though the hardware should support the newer API. The guidance directs affected players back to the black-screen steps and to -skipmovies, then asks for the newly generated log.

This explanation is specific to the systems represented by those logs; it does not establish that every colored screen has the same cause. Complete the verified-file, runtime, movie-skip, and state-backup checks first, then collect diagnostics if the screen remains.
Test windowed presentation
If the game starts but the display remains black, test a windowed launch through the game’s available display settings or configuration. A windowed test is reversible and helps distinguish a full-screen presentation problem from a failure before rendering. Record the original setting so you can restore it after troubleshooting.
Try Windows 8 compatibility mode (community workaround)
Players have reported that Windows 8 compatibility mode can help with launch failures on newer Windows versions. This is anecdotal, not an official guarantee, and should be treated as a reversible experiment:

- Open the game’s installation folder from Steam’s Properties > Installed Files > Browse command.
- Right-click
ShadowTactics.exeand choose Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab and enable Run this program in compatibility mode for, selecting Windows 8.
- Apply the setting and test one launch.
If there is no improvement, turn the setting off before trying another remedy. Compatibility mode can change behavior outside the game’s graphics path, so do not leave it enabled merely because it was suggested in a forum report.

Disable fullscreen optimizations (community workaround)
The same type of player reports describe disabling fullscreen optimizations on ShadowTactics.exe as another possible modern-Windows workaround. On the executable’s Compatibility tab, enable Disable fullscreen optimizations, apply, and test. Revert it if the result is unchanged or if input, scaling, or alt-tab behavior becomes worse. Neither this setting nor compatibility mode should replace the official repair and logging steps.
6. Fix controller conflicts and UNKNOWN CONTROLLER
Controller failures can be independent of a graphics problem. External or Xbox controllers may be enumerated in an unexpected order, while duplicate physical, Bluetooth, or virtual devices can make the game assign input to an UNKNOWN CONTROLLER entry. In some reports, the conflict affects launch itself, not just menu navigation.
Start with one physical controller
- Exit the game.
- Disconnect every extra gamepad, steering device, flight stick, Bluetooth controller adapter, and virtual-controller device. If a controller is connected through both Bluetooth and USB, leave only one connection.
- Close controller-remapping software and any utility that creates a virtual Xbox-style pad.
- Connect one intended controller directly to the PC and wait for Windows to finish detecting it.
- Launch Shadow Tactics from Steam and test the menu.
If the game now launches, reconnect devices one at a time. The first device that brings back the crash or unknown entry is the likely conflict. Keep that device disconnected while you play or investigate its driver and remapping configuration separately.
Select the intended entry in the game
When more than one controller appears, open Options > Gameplay and select the intended Xbox controller entry rather than UNKNOWN CONTROLLER. Apply the selection, return to the menu, and test movement and confirmation buttons. If the correct entry disappears after restarting, repeat the one-controller baseline; the game may be receiving a different device order each time.

Separate input testing from graphics testing
Do not troubleshoot a controller conflict by deleting saves or changing DirectX settings. First reproduce the launch with no controller attached, then with exactly one attached. If keyboard and mouse launch reliably but a pad causes the failure, the input-enumeration path is implicated. If both launch methods fail identically, return to the installation, runtime, movie, and graphics procedures instead.
7. Capture diagnostics before contacting support
When the fixes above do not resolve the problem, provide the developer with artifacts from the exact failed launch. The game’s output_log.txt is overwritten on each start, so an old copy may describe a different attempt.
- Close the game if it is still open.
- Reproduce the failure once, whether it is a black screen, purple screen, immediate close, or controller-related launch failure.
- Exit the game without starting it again.
- Open the game’s
Shadow Tactics_Datafolder and copyoutput_log.txtimmediately. - Generate a Windows DxDiag report and include it with the log.
- Use the game’s technical-support route associated with its Steam listing, identifying the Windows version, graphics hardware, controller setup, Steam build, and the exact step at which the failure occurs.
Describe changes in order: whether file verification found replacements, whether Visual C++ 2010 x86 was installed, whether -skipmovies changed the symptom, whether gameState.save was present, and whether the game behaved differently with all controllers disconnected. This gives support a reproducible branch instead of a generic “it crashes” report.

After the game launches
- Remove temporary compatibility settings one at a time and retest so you know which setting is actually required.
- Keep only the controller you intend to use connected until the game consistently recognizes it under Options > Gameplay.
- Retain the user-folder backup until you have loaded a campaign and confirmed that saves are present.
- If a future failure occurs, reproduce it once and copy
Shadow Tactics_Data/output_log.txtbefore launching again, because the next start overwrites the previous log.
