There is no single Chrome flag that reliably fixes every Selenium screenshot crash. First check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions, then separate a page-readiness timeout from a browser or renderer failure. Reproduce the problem with a fixed, small viewport and a minimal page before changing headless, GPU, or process settings.
First identify what failed
A failed screenshot can mean different things: Chrome exited, the WebDriver screenshot command timed out, the call failed while the browser stayed open, or an image was saved but is blank or incomplete. Those outcomes point to different causes. Record the operating system and version, Selenium binding and version, Chrome and ChromeDriver build numbers, Chrome options, screenshot method, page URL (or a safe minimal reproduction), full exception, and available Chrome/ChromeDriver logs.

Check Chrome and ChromeDriver compatibility
Compare the major version numbers of Chrome and ChromeDriver. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says their major versions must match. If they differ, install a compatible pair and repeat the unchanged test before investigating other settings.

Capture the exact versions rather than writing only “latest.” Browser and driver releases move independently, and a recorded pair makes a failure reproducible. Avoid updating every dependency at once: that can hide whether a version mismatch caused the original problem.
Rule out page-readiness and timing problems
A screenshot taken before the content is ready may look like a capture failure even when Chrome has not crashed. After navigation, use an explicit Selenium wait for the element or application state that must appear in the image. For animated or JavaScript-heavy pages, wait for the actual content or animation state—not just the navigation command to finish.

Chrome’s command-line capture options illustrate the distinction: --timeout sets a maximum delay before capture even if loading continues, while --virtual-time-budget advances time-dependent page code. These are Chrome CLI options, not Selenium WebDriver flags; do not add them to Selenium code expecting them to control a WebDriver screenshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake the capture reproducible
Set a deliberate viewport before capturing. A fixed window size makes repeated runs easier to compare and helps isolate layout-dependent behavior. Chrome’s headless documentation documents pairing CLI --screenshot with --window-size; that does not establish that viewport size causes a particular Selenium crash.

- Use a stable, minimal page that reproduces the problem, if possible.
- Set a known window size in the WebDriver session before taking the screenshot.
- Try a normal viewport screenshot before attempting a very tall or full-page image.
- If the large capture fails, reduce the viewport as a diagnostic experiment and compare logs and outcomes.
If the small viewport works but a very large capture fails, that narrows the conditions but does not, by itself, prove why the failure occurs.
Verify which headless mode Chrome is using
Record the Chrome binary path and the precise headless argument. Headless behavior is version-sensitive. The Chromium Headless documentation states: “As of M132, headless shell functionality is no longer part of the Chrome binary, so –headless=old has no effect.” If your setup depends on the old implementation with Chrome M132 or later, use chrome-headless-shell only if you specifically require that implementation; otherwise use the supported current Chrome headless mode.

A report that a page freezes under a particular headless setup is evidence about that setup, not proof that all headless Chrome sessions share the same defect. For example, an individual Selenium issue report describes pages seeming to freeze when switching headless options. Use such reports to compare symptoms, not as universal diagnoses.

Test GPU and process flags individually
Do not paste a bundle of flags from an unrelated fix. Remove unusual process flags from the minimal reproduction first, then test GPU-related settings one at a time only if the logs or environment make rendering a plausible lead.

--single-process: remove it during diagnosis unless your setup specifically requires it.--disable-gpu: do not assume it is always necessary or always harmful. A Selenium issue report records a DevTools disconnection with--disable-gpu,--single-process, and headless mode together. It supports testing the combination carefully, not a blanket GPU recommendation.- Linux graphics configuration: Chromium’s GPU guidance describes hardware use in headless mode as dependent on configuration. Its Linux guidance covers display availability, OpenGL autodetection with an X display, and possible Vulkan configurations on some systems.
Change one setting at a time and keep the same browser, driver, page, viewport, and capture method. The cited documentation and issue reports do not establish a universal GPU setting that prevents Selenium screenshot crashes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare another environment when the local cause is unclear
Run the same minimal test in a second environment, keeping the Chrome version, viewport, page, and capture method as similar as possible. If the failure follows the page or test, investigate those conditions; if it appears only in the local runtime, compare its browser installation, display and graphics configuration, and logs.
BrowserStack’s Selenium screenshot documentation describes saving screenshots, and its Visual Logs documentation describes screenshots during test commands. A managed service can help compare environments; its documentation does not promise to fix a local Chrome crash.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than a local Selenium diagnosis, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. Its API can accept a URL and return PNG, JPEG, or WebP; for example, request a WebP screenshot of a page you are authorized to capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners and known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default, with each step configurable. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome exits or the session disconnects | Chrome/ChromeDriver major versions, full logs, process flags, and whether the failure repeats on a minimal page. | Match the major versions; remove unusual flags and retest individually. |
| Screenshot command times out, but Chrome remains open | Whether the required page content was ready and whether the page or capture is unusually large. | Wait explicitly for the needed content, then try a fixed, smaller viewport. |
| Image is blank or missing content | Whether the page had loaded the target content, or whether animations and delayed scripts were still running. | Wait for the relevant element or state and repeat with a stable minimal page. |
| DevTools disconnects after adding flags | Which flags changed together, especially process and GPU flags. | Remove the added flags, then test one at a time. A reported combination is not proof of a universal cause. |
Only --headless=old behaves unexpectedly on Chrome M132 or later |
Whether the setup expects old Headless to be bundled in Chrome. | Use current supported headless mode, or the separate chrome-headless-shell if old Headless is required. |
| Local result differs from a managed environment | Whether browser version, viewport, page, and capture method are comparable. | Compare runtime and graphics configuration; remote success does not establish a local fix. |
What to include when asking for help
- Operating system and version; Selenium binding and version.
- Exact Chrome and ChromeDriver versions, plus the Chrome binary path.
- All Chrome options, including the headless and GPU/process flags.
- The screenshot method, viewport, and whether the capture is viewport-sized or full-page.
- The complete exception and relevant browser/driver logs.
- A safe minimal page or reproduction, and whether Chrome exits, the command times out, or the saved image is blank.
These details distinguish version compatibility, page readiness, renderer behavior, and environment-specific failures. Issue reports from 2023 and 2024 describe particular setups; they do not establish how common those failures are or diagnose a different machine.
