For ScreenshotOne’s timeout_error, first check whether the request is spending too long waiting for the page, rendering the capture, or sitting through an unnecessary fixed delay. Match wait_until, navigation_timeout, and timeout to the phase that is failing; use asynchronous requests with webhooks for work that may outlast a synchronous request. A proxy is a targeted retry only when blocking or routing trouble is plausible.
What ScreenshotOne’s timeout error means
ScreenshotOne uses timeout_error when it cannot render a screenshot or video within the time allowed for the request. Its guidance describes two broad possibilities: the target site is not responding quickly, or rendering takes longer than expected. The error alone does not identify which phase caused the delay, so changing every setting at once can hide the cause.

ScreenshotOne documents two distinct timeouts. The overall timeout is the request’s rendering budget. The navigation_timeout limits how long it waits for the target site to respond. In ScreenshotOne’s request-options documentation, the regular-request overall timeout defaults to 60 seconds and has a 90-second maximum; the navigation timeout defaults to 30 seconds and also has a 30-second maximum. These are configuration limits, not promises that a site will render successfully within that time. For asynchronous requests with webhooks, the timeout guidance allows up to 300 seconds. - Navigation: the target takes too long to respond or is difficult to reach. Check
navigation_timeout, the target’s response behavior, and whether routing or IP blocking is plausible. - Rendering: the page responds, but scripts, assets, full-page capture, or other rendering work takes too long. Check the overall
timeout, capture options, and whether extra waits are necessary. - Caller wait: your application, HTTP client, proxy, or serverless platform stops waiting before ScreenshotOne finishes. Align its timeout with the API’s processing window; this may appear as
request_abortedrather thantimeout_error.

Fix the request in a controlled order
1. Remove an unnecessary fixed delay
The delay option adds a fixed wait before capture; its documented default is zero seconds. If you set a long delay “just in case,” reduce it or remove it and test again. That wait consumes elapsed request time without making an unresponsive site load faster. Keep a delay only when the page needs a known settling interval after navigation. 2. Choose a wait condition that matches the page
The documented wait_until choices are load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2; the options reference defaults to load. A page with ongoing network activity may never become idle in a useful timeframe, while a site that does not emit DOMContentLoaded as expected can make that condition unsuitable. Try one condition at a time and observe whether the failure moves or disappears. Do not assume that a network-idle condition is always more reliable: it waits for a period with very few or no network connections, which can be a poor fit for pages with persistent activity. 3. Increase only the timeout for the failing stage
If the target’s response phase is stalling, adjust navigation_timeout within its documented limit. If the site responds but the complete capture needs more time, raise the overall timeout within the limit for that request mode. The regular-request overall maximum is 90 seconds, while navigation timeout is capped at 30 seconds in the current options reference. 4. Use asynchronous requests for longer work
When rendering may exceed the synchronous request window, ScreenshotOne recommends asynchronous requests with webhooks. Its timeout guidance allows an overall timeout of up to 300 seconds in that mode. Configure the webhook handling and make sure the caller-side system is designed for asynchronous completion; a longer API timeout cannot help if your own runtime ends the request first. 5. Retry through a proxy only with evidence
A proxy may be worth one targeted retry when the symptoms point to IP throttling, blocking, or regional routing. It is not a general fix for slow rendering: proxies can add latency and another service dependency. First try reducing unnecessary page work or delay, choosing an appropriate wait condition, and tuning the relevant timeout. Use automated access only where it is allowed. 6. If it is a full-page capture, reduce extra rendering work
Start with ScreenshotOne’s default full-page algorithm. Its documentation also describes a by_sections alternative, scroll controls, motion reduction, and additional waiting for rendering problems. These options can help address specific capture defects, but additional rendering work or waits can hurt performance. Add only the option tied to an observed problem, then retest. Keep the fix testable
- Record the failing URL, capture mode, request settings, response error, and caller-side timeout.
- Remove any unneeded
delayand select a singlewait_untilcondition appropriate to the page. - Change the timeout for the stage that logs indicate is slow; stay within the documented limit for the request mode.
- If the work needs a longer window, move it to asynchronous processing with a webhook and confirm your own runtime will not abort first.
- Try a proxy only for credible blocking or routing symptoms. For full-page shots, revert unrelated quality options and add back only what the capture needs.
Changing one variable per retry makes the result interpretable and avoids accumulating waits or rendering options that worsen latency.
