How to Take a Puppeteer Screenshot After a Page Finishes Loading

Wait for Puppeteer’s network-idle condition or a page-specific selector, then save a screenshot. Includes full-page and element capture examples and troubleshooting.

Wait for the page condition that actually means “ready” for your capture, then call page.screenshot(). For a general-purpose starting point, Puppeteer’s screenshot guide uses page.goto() with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; for dynamic sites, waiting for a page-specific selector can be more reliable.

Take a screenshot after navigation reaches network idle

Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer, then run this script. It opens a browser, navigates to the page, waits for Puppeteer’s networkidle2 lifecycle event, saves a PNG, and closes the browser.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();

    await page.goto('https://example.com', {
      waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
    });

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Run it with node screenshot.js. The output file, page.png, is written to the current working directory. Puppeteer’s official guide demonstrates this navigation-and-capture pattern: Puppeteer screenshots.

Choose what “finished loading” means

A browser event can tell you that a particular phase of navigation has completed; it cannot guarantee that every site’s meaningful content is ready. Choose the wait condition based on what must appear in your screenshot.

Use a navigation lifecycle event

page.goto() accepts a waitUntil option. Its default is load; the navigation timeout defaults to 30,000 milliseconds. If you specify more than one lifecycle event, Puppeteer waits until all of them have fired. The documented choices are load, domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2. See Puppeteer’s wait options.

Condition What it waits for When it may fit
domcontentloaded The DOM content has been parsed; it does not wait for all resources to finish loading. When you will separately wait for an element that signals the page is ready for capture.
load The page’s load lifecycle event. When the ordinary navigation load event is an adequate readiness signal.
networkidle0 No more than zero network connections for a 500 ms window. When you want a stricter network-idle condition and the site’s requests settle.
networkidle2 No more than two network connections for a 500 ms window. A general-purpose starting point, as in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide.

The network-idle thresholds and lifecycle names are documented in Puppeteer’s lifecycle event type and network-idle options.

Wait for an application-specific readiness element

Some pages render the content you need after navigation settles; others keep connections open even after the useful content is visible. If the page exposes a reliable readiness element, wait for it explicitly. In this example, [data-ready="true"] is illustrative: replace it with a selector that exists on your target page and signals the content you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
  waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
});

await page.waitForSelector('[data-ready="true"]');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

Puppeteer also provides page.waitForNetworkIdle() as a separate wait. Its idleTime defaults to 500 ms, and the method waits at least that long once network idleness is reached. See the method documentation.

Capture the full page or one element

Save a full-page image

Set fullPage: true in the screenshot options to capture the full page rather than just the viewport. The default is false; PNG is the default image type. Puppeteer’s screenshot options describe the available settings.

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'full-page.png',
  fullPage: true,
});

Capture one element

Wait for the target element, then call the element handle’s screenshot() method. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if necessary. The method throws if the element has been detached from the DOM before capture. See the element screenshot method.

}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });

Troubleshoot screenshots that are late or incomplete

  • Navigation times out: the default navigation timeout is 30,000 ms. Check whether the site keeps connections active or takes longer than expected to load, then select a readiness condition that matches the page rather than relying on network idle automatically.
  • The screenshot is missing content: navigation may have completed before the application rendered the needed content. Wait for a selector that represents readiness, then capture.
  • The wait never completes: a site may keep network connections open. Try a page-specific selector or another lifecycle event appropriate to the capture instead of assuming that network idle will occur.
  • An element screenshot throws: the element may have been removed from the DOM. Wait for a stable target and ensure the selector identifies the element that remains present through capture.
