It means the configured update endpoint returned HTTP 503. In Configuration Manager (SCCM/MECM), that endpoint is commonly an internal WSUS Software Update Point (SUP), IIS, a proxy, or a network device—not necessarily Microsoft’s public Windows Update service. Identify the failing endpoint first, then repair that layer.
Microsoft maps this code to an unavailable update source and recommends checking network and proxy access: Common Windows Update errors.

What the error means
| Code | Symbolic name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
0x80244022 |
WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE |
The configured update endpoint returned HTTP 503 (service unavailable). |
This is a scan failure: the Configuration Manager Scan Agent asks the Windows Update Agent to scan the assigned WSUS/SUP source, and that request receives 503. It is different from WSUS synchronization, update-content download, installation, or compliance-reporting failures. The 503 text describes the HTTP response; it does not prove that Microsoft is globally overloaded.
Configuration Manager’s workflow and log relationships are described in Microsoft’s software update management troubleshooting guide.

Use scope to choose the first investigation
| Pattern | Start here |
|---|---|
| One device | WSUS policy, DNS, WinHTTP proxy, local firewall, Windows Update services, or damaged client state. |
| One subnet, VPN group, or boundary | Boundary-group SUP assignment, routing, firewall, proxy, or DNS. |
| Most or all clients | SUP/WSUS, IIS, WsusPool, SQL/WID, server resources, or a site-wide configuration change. |
| Intermittent failures | Application-pool recycling, request queues, resource pressure, proxy timeouts, database contention, or scan bursts. |
| Scan succeeds but deployment fails | Investigate deployment policy, distribution-point content, installation, or detection; it is not this scan error. |
1. Confirm the error and correlate logs
On the client, Configuration Manager logs normally reside in C:WindowsCCMLogs.
WUAHandler.log: Windows Update Agent requests and returned codes.ScanAgent.log: scan-job start, progress, and completion.LocationServices.log: SUP discovery and assignment.ClientLocation.log: site and management-point location.PolicyAgent.log: policy retrieval.WindowsUpdate.log: detailed Windows Update activity, including endpoint and proxy clues.
Record the timestamp of 0x80244022. On the SUP, compare that time with IIS logs, WSUS events, and Application/System events. A matching IIS 503 is stronger evidence than the client code alone.
2. Identify the actual update source
Find the WSUS/SUP URL in WUAHandler.log or the reconstructed Windows Update log. Common ports are 8530 (HTTP) and 8531 (HTTPS), but your SUP configuration may use another host or port.

Review WUServer, WUStatusServer, and UseWUServer. An old or unreachable value may come from Group Policy. Do not permanently edit the registry before identifying the policy or Configuration Manager design that owns it; Group Policy can overwrite a manual change.
3. Test DNS, TCP, WSUS, and WinHTTP
Run these tests from the affected client, substituting the hostname and port shown in your logs.

Resolve-DnsName wsus-server.example.com
Test-NetConnection wsus-server.example.com -Port 8530
Test-NetConnection wsus-server.example.com -Port 8531
Test only the configured port when interpreting results. A DNS or TCP failure points to name resolution, routing, firewall, or port configuration.
Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "http://wsus-server:8530/iuident.cab" -UseBasicParsing
Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "https://wsus-server:8531/iuident.cab" -UseBasicParsing
- 200: basic web-endpoint access works, but this does not prove every WSUS API is healthy.
- 503: investigate IIS,
WsusPool, WSUS, proxy, load balancer, or upstream availability. - 401/407: server or proxy authentication is involved.
- 403: authorization or filtering may be blocking the request.
- TLS error: check certificate trust, expiration, name matching, binding, and TLS policy.
Check the machine-level proxy used by Windows Update:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →netsh winhttp show proxy
Confirm that the proxy is reachable, permits the SUP hostname and paths, does not require interactive user authentication, and is not breaking certificate validation through SSL inspection. Browser proxy settings are not automatically suitable for the Windows Update service.
4. Check the SUP, WSUS, and IIS
Verify services
Get-Service WsusService, W3SVC, WAS, BITS, WUAUSERV
Confirm that WSUS and the required IIS services are running. Service names and roles can vary by Windows Server version.
Inspect WsusPool
In IIS Manager, open Application Pools and inspect WsusPool. Check its state, recent recycles, rapid-failure events, private-memory behavior, CPU and memory pressure, worker-process crashes, and request queues. A stopped or repeatedly recycling pool can return 503.
Rank #3
Do not set the pool’s private-memory limit to unlimited as a generic fix. That can conceal a memory leak, inefficient query, oversized database, or inadequate capacity. Base any limit change on event logs, measured resource use, server sizing, and change control.

Read IIS and event logs
IIS logs are usually under C:inetpublogsLogFilesW3SVC*. At the failure time, search for 503, 500, 401, 403, slow responses, and repeated requests to /ClientWebService/, /SimpleAuthWebService/, /ServerSyncWebService/, or /iuident.cab. Also review Application, System, Windows Server Update Services, IIS-W3SVC-WP, and WAS events.
Check WSUS and server capacity
Use the WSUS tools for configuration and status, for example:
Get-WsusServer
(Get-WsusServer).GetConfiguration()
Then check free disk space, memory, CPU, SQL Server or Windows Internal Database pressure, database growth and maintenance, update-metadata volume, synchronization status, and network or upstream-proxy limits. Restarting a failed service may restore scans temporarily, but recurring 503s require capacity or maintenance remediation. Avoid running an unreviewed database-cleanup script; procedures depend on the server, database, and change-control state.
5. Check policy and SUP assignment
gpresult /h C:Tempgpresult.html
gpresult /scope computer /r
Review applied policy for the intranet update-service location, Automatic Updates, dual scan, Windows Update for Business deferrals or pauses, target-release settings, and MDM/Group Policy precedence. Confirm that the client’s boundary group assigns the intended SUP and that recent site or SUP changes reached the device. Microsoft documents policy and scan-failure paths in Troubleshoot software update scan failures.
Rank #4
6. Repair an individual client only after infrastructure is healthy
Check Windows Update services
sc query wuauserv
sc query bits
sc start wuauserv
sc start bits
Start stopped services only when permitted by policy and when no servicing operation is active.
Retrieve policy and trigger a scan
In Control Panel > Configuration Manager > Actions, run Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle, then Software Updates Scan Cycle. Run Software Updates Deployment Evaluation Cycle only when deployment evaluation is also required.
Automation through TriggerSchedule uses version-dependent schedule identifiers. Verify the identifier for your Configuration Manager release instead of treating an undocumented GUID as universal.
Generate a readable Windows Update log
Get-WindowsUpdateLog
This reconstructs a diagnostic log from ETL files. Use timestamps from the new scan attempt.
Reset local update components as a last resort
After confirming the SUP is reachable and healthy, and after ensuring no update installation is running, use an elevated prompt:
Best Value
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
Renaming these folders can remove cached metadata and affect local update history. Do not delete them across a fleet or use this procedure to treat a server-side 503. Microsoft’s client-agent guidance covers configuration, services, proxy, reset, and identity checks: Troubleshoot issues with WSUS client agents.
7. Understand duplicate WSUS identity correctly
Disk cloning can create duplicate WSUS client IDs, causing several machines to appear as one computer or report inconsistent status. That is primarily an identity and reporting problem, not the normal explanation for a direct HTTP 503. Investigate it when endpoint access works but reporting or computer identity is wrong.
8. Verify the repair
- Retrieve Machine Policy.
- Run a Software Updates Scan Cycle.
- Record the scan start time.
- Confirm successful completion in
ScanAgent.logandWUAHandler.log. - Check the Windows Update log for a completed scan and received metadata.
- Run deployment evaluation if required by the original symptom.
- Confirm that compliance state updates at the management point and site.
An iuident.cab response or service restart alone is not proof of recovery; the Configuration Manager-initiated scan must complete successfully.

Prevention checklist
- Document each SUP URL, port, certificate binding, and boundary-group assignment.
- Monitor
WsusPoolrecycles, IIS 503s, WAS events, disk, memory, and database health. - Review products, classifications, superseded updates, and WSUS maintenance regularly.
- Plan capacity for concurrent scans and avoid synchronized scan storms where possible.
- Include proxy, firewall, DNS, and certificate changes in update-service change reviews.
- Keep client, SUP, and Configuration Manager logs available for timestamp correlation.
