Start with the least destructive fixes: install every Xbox and Samson update, perform a complete power cycle, and run Samson once while the Series X is offline. If the game still crashes, reinstall Samson and its add-ons and verify the console has unobstructed ventilation. For controller problems, resynchronize the controller, test a USB connection where supported, and try a second known-good controller. If several games show the same failures after these steps, treat the problem as a console or service issue and contact Xbox Support or an authorized repair provider.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Samson is discussed by players in the r/samsongame community, including reports of frame drops in the Xbox Series X performance mode. No official Samson support page or Samson patch notes were identified, so game-specific conclusions should be treated as community observations rather than confirmed publisher statements. The procedures below are general Xbox Series X troubleshooting steps, with Samson used as the test game.

A crash, a stutter, and a controller disconnect have different likely scopes:

- Crash or sudden return to the dashboard: could be a damaged game installation, a transient console state, an online-session problem, or a broader system fault.
- Stutter or uneven frame pacing: may be limited to Samson’s performance mode, or may be affected by network services or a console that is running poorly.
- Controller disconnect or missed input: may involve synchronization, the controller, the USB connection, or the console’s wireless hardware rather than the game itself.
The fastest diagnosis is to change one variable at a time and test Samson after each change. Do not begin with a factory reset: the steps below are reversible and provide more useful evidence.

1. Install Xbox and Samson updates
Updates are the first step recommended in Microsoft’s Xbox Series X service guidance. Ubisoft’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance likewise starts with current console software because outdated system components can cause game performance problems.
Check for a console update
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system, then Settings.
- Choose System, then Updates.
- Install any available console update and allow the Series X to restart fully.
Do not launch Samson while an update is still downloading or applying. If the console reports that it is already up to date, continue to the game update check.
Check Samson and its add-ons
- Open My games & apps.
- Select Manage, then Updates.
- Install every available Samson update. If Samson has listed add-ons, update those as well.
- Start the game and reproduce the original action once before changing another setting.
Record what happened after the update: a crash at launch, a crash in a particular area, a repeatable stutter, or an input failure. That distinction matters if you later need support.

2. Perform a complete power cycle
A normal restart may leave temporary state intact. Square Enix’s Xbox crash procedure specifies a full shutdown and power removal:

- With the Series X turned on, hold the console’s physical power button for 10 seconds, until the console switches off.
- Unplug the console’s power cable.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the console on.
- Launch Samson and test the same activity that previously failed.
The 10-second hold and the 10-second wait are part of the procedure; do not substitute a brief tap on the power button. A power cycle does not remove installed games or saved data, but unsaved progress from the interrupted session will be lost.
3. Test Samson while the console is offline
Disconnecting from the internet separates local game and console behavior from network services, matchmaking, authentication, and an online session. Ubisoft recommends an offline test when investigating Xbox Series X crashes or stutter.
Run the test
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose General > Network settings.
- Select Go offline.
- Launch Samson and repeat the action that produced the symptom. Test long enough to reach the same menu, level, or mode, but do not treat one short successful launch as proof that the problem is permanently fixed.
- Return to Settings > General > Network settings and select Go online when finished.
Interpret the result
- The problem disappears offline: investigate the online session, service availability, sign-in state, or network path before replacing hardware. Note whether the failure returns immediately after reconnecting.
- The problem is identical offline: network service is less likely to be the trigger. Continue with the reinstall and hardware-isolation steps.
- Samson will not start offline: the title or a mode may require an online entitlement or service. Restore the connection and record that limitation rather than treating the failed offline launch as a crash diagnosis.
4. Reinstall Samson and its add-ons
If updates, a power cycle, and the offline test do not change repeated crashes, Square Enix recommends uninstalling the game and add-ons, then reinstalling them. This replaces local files that may be incomplete or damaged.
Reinstall procedure
- Open My games & apps > See all.
- Highlight Samson, press the Menu button, and choose Manage game and add-ons.
- Use the uninstall option for Samson and any installed Samson add-ons. Confirm the removal.
- Restart the console with the complete power-cycle procedure if the uninstall screen or game had been frozen.
- Reinstall Samson from your library or the location where it was acquired.
- Wait for the installation and all updates to finish before launching.
- Test the base game first, then enable or install add-ons if the symptom does not recur.
Cloud-synchronized saves normally return when you sign in, but a reinstall is not a substitute for a backup of anything the game stores only locally. If Samson presents a save-sync choice, read the timestamps and choose the copy that contains your latest progress; do not select a blank local save merely to get past a prompt.

5. Check ventilation and heat conditions
Square Enix includes ventilation in its recommended next steps for persistent Xbox crashes. A Series X should have clear airflow around its intake and exhaust areas and should not be enclosed in a tight cabinet or placed directly against a heat-producing device.
- Move the console into an open, stable location with space around its vents.
- Keep vents clear of dust, fabric, books, and other objects.
- Do not cover the console while it is running.
- Let the console cool completely if it has shut down unexpectedly or feels unusually hot, then retest once it is in a well-ventilated position.
A warm console by itself does not prove a hardware failure. The stronger warning sign is a repeatable shutdown, crash, or severe performance problem across more than one game after the software steps have been completed.
6. Isolate Samson from the controller
Controller symptoms require a different test path from frame-rate problems. Microsoft’s service guidance calls for connecting an Xbox controller and verifying that it synchronizes and responds. Use the following sequence to determine whether the game, controller, cable, or console is responsible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Resynchronize the controller
- Turn on the Series X and controller.
- Press the sync button on the console, then press and hold the sync button on the controller until the Xbox light flashes and settles.
- Wait for the controller to remain connected at the dashboard before launching Samson.
- Test several dashboard actions first, then test Samson.
Try a wired USB connection
Where your controller supports wired operation, connect it directly to the Series X with a known-good USB cable and test Samson again. This bypasses the controller’s wireless link for the test. If input becomes stable over USB but not wirelessly, focus on synchronization, wireless interference, controller firmware, or the console’s wireless connection rather than Samson’s frame pacing.

Test a second controller
Use a second known-good Xbox controller and repeat the same action. The result narrows the fault:
| Result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only the original controller disconnects | The controller, its battery, or its wireless hardware is the leading suspect | Continue testing that controller by USB where supported; seek controller service or replacement if the fault follows it |
| Both controllers fail only in Samson | A game-specific input or session problem is more likely | Retest after updates, offline testing, and reinstalling Samson |
| Both controllers fail in several games | Console connectivity or a system-level service issue is more likely | Document the games and contact Xbox Support |
| USB works but wireless fails with both controllers | The wireless path is implicated | Keep the USB result and game list for support; do not assume reinstalling Samson will repair the radio connection |
Diagnose crashes, stutter, and input failures separately
When Samson crashes at launch
- Finish the Xbox and Samson update checks.
- Complete the 10-second shutdown and power-cable removal procedure.
- Try one offline launch.
- Reinstall Samson and its add-ons if the crash remains.
- Note whether the dashboard appears immediately, after a save loads, or only when entering an online mode.
A crash that occurs only when connecting to an online mode points toward a service or session investigation. A crash that remains offline after a clean reinstall is stronger evidence of a game or console fault, but it is not proof that the Series X hardware has failed.
When Samson stutters
Frame drops reported by the Samson community include performance-mode complaints on Xbox Series X, but no official Samson performance statistic or patch commitment establishes a universal frame rate or a single cause. First determine whether the stutter is visible in menus, only during gameplay, or only during online activity. Test offline, then compare Samson with another demanding game:
- Samson alone stutters: keep the issue scoped to the game until updates or a reinstall change it.
- Several games stutter: check updates, power-cycle state, ventilation, and available system diagnostics before assuming Samson is responsible.
- Stutter changes when online: investigate session or service conditions before replacing the controller or console.
When the controller disconnects
Check dashboard control before testing Samson. If the controller drops at the dashboard, the game is not the only possible cause. Resynchronize, try USB, and use a second controller. Record whether the failure is a complete disconnect, a brief input pause, or a stick/button that stops responding; these symptoms point to different hardware paths.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Xbox
Escalate after the software and isolation steps when failures are repeatable across multiple games, both controllers fail, the console shuts down unexpectedly, or the Series X cannot maintain stable operation even when Samson is uninstalled. Microsoft documents controller and console service procedures and provides channels for genuine replacement parts. Use Xbox Support or an authorized repair route rather than opening the console or using unverified parts.
Prepare useful evidence
- List the Xbox system version and Samson version shown after updating.
- Describe the exact sequence that reproduces the problem.
- State whether the problem occurs offline and online.
- List every game tested and whether each one crashes, stutters, or loses controller input.
- Identify which controller, USB cable, and connection mode were used.
- Record any on-screen error code or unexpected shutdown behavior.
This information lets support distinguish a Samson-only issue from a console-wide fault without repeating every test.
A practical decision path
- Update everything. If the symptom stops, monitor Samson normally and keep automatic updates enabled.
- Power-cycle completely. If the symptom returns, continue rather than repeating restarts indefinitely.
- Run one offline test. A clean offline result shifts attention to network or service conditions; an unchanged result shifts attention to local files or hardware.
- Reinstall Samson and add-ons. Test the base installation before adding optional content.
- For input issues, isolate the controller. Resync, test USB, and compare with a second controller.
- Check ventilation and compare another game. Several games failing indicates a broader console issue.
- Escalate system-wide failures. Use Xbox Support or authorized repair when local, reversible steps no longer separate the cause.
This sequence prioritizes changes that affect one game or one temporary state before steps that involve reinstalling software or servicing hardware. It also leaves you with a clear record of what changed, which is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling without testing the scope of the fault.
