Start by reloading the page, then find out whether the problem affects one website or several. If the page works in another browser, on another device, or over a different network, that comparison helps narrow the cause to Safari, the device, the network, or the website itself. The steps below cover Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
First, find out what is affected
Reload the page. Then try the same address in another browser or on another device using the same network. On iPhone or iPad, also try cellular data or a different Wi‑Fi network.

- One site fails, but others work: Check that site’s stored data, compatibility, permissions, and any privacy or network tools that could affect it. The website itself may also be having a problem.
- Several sites fail in Safari: Check Safari settings, extensions, and whether another browser works.
- Several devices and browsers fail on one network: The network may be involved. Apple recommends checking custom proxy or DNS settings when network settings could be the cause.
These comparisons narrow down where to look; none proves a cause by itself. Apple Support says that if Safari does not load a webpage correctly, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or otherwise does not work as expected, its troubleshooting steps may help: Apple’s Mac troubleshooting guide.

Reload, then update and restart
- In Safari, press Command-R to reload the page.
- If Safari is stuck, quit and reopen it. Force quit only if it will not quit normally.
- Install available macOS updates, then restart your Mac.
Test extensions and private browsing
Temporarily turn off Safari extensions and reload the affected site. If it works, update your extensions or re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.

Next, open the site in a private window. If it works there but not in a regular window, stored website data may be contributing to the problem. In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data (called Preferences in older versions), find the affected site, and remove its data. This can sign you out, so make sure you know your sign-in details first.
Review settings that affect the site
Check Safari’s Privacy, Security, Websites, and Advanced settings for something that may block the page’s features. Depending on the site, relevant settings can include JavaScript, cookies, pop-ups, downloads, permissions, content blockers, or other privacy protections.

Change only settings relevant to the affected site. Treat changes as tests: once you know whether a setting matters, restore your preferred privacy protections where possible.

Test Private Relay, VPN, or security software
Some sites use IP filtering, monitoring, or rate-limiting and may not work as expected with iCloud Private Relay. If the affected site appears to be the only problem, try View > Reload and Show IP Address when that option is available. This temporarily tests the page without Private Relay’s IP masking; it is not a reason to leave the protection off by default. A VPN or security software can also affect a site’s connection. Temporarily test with it off only if appropriate, then turn it back on. If the same sites fail in other browsers or on other devices on the same network, check the network rather than changing Safari settings at random.
Report a site-specific problem
If only one site remains broken after these checks, contact its developer or support team. On a Mac running Safari 26 or later, reload the page and look for Page Menu > Report a Website Issue. The option may not appear for every page.

Fix Safari pages on an iPhone or iPad
Try another connection and check VPN
- Open the page using cellular data, or connect to a different Wi‑Fi network.
- Check whether a VPN is on. Some websites or apps may block content while a VPN is active; if suitable, briefly test the site with the VPN off and then restore your usual setting.
- Restart your iPhone or iPad and try again.
Clear website data if needed
Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This is broader than removing data for one site on a Mac: it can affect browsing history and the state of websites. Use it if connection checks and a restart have not helped.

If a page is incomplete or interactive features do not work, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and make sure JavaScript is on.

For a persistent problem with one site, Private Relay may be involved if the site relies on IP filtering, monitoring, or rate-limiting. You can temporarily allow that site to see your IP address as a diagnostic test, then restore your preferred privacy setting. Apple explains the site-specific controls in its Private Relay guide.
If the site is still broken, contact its developer. Apple’s device-specific troubleshooting steps are also available in its guide for Safari not loading websites on iPhone or iPad.
