OD is an in-development horror project from Kojima Productions, made with Xbox Game Studios. Its announced premise centers on testing a player’s fear threshold and blurring the line between games and film. The concept is public; the story, detailed gameplay, release window and complete platform list are not.
What is OD?
Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios announced OD at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023. The studio described it as a horror project built around confronting fear. Kojima Productions’ announcement put it this way: “OD explores the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear – while blurring the boundaries of gaming and film.” That is the project’s creative framing, not a specification of how it plays.

The title uses “OD” as a reference to overdosing, in this case on fear. The announcement does not explain the story or define what players will do moment to moment, so the phrase should not be taken as a literal description of a confirmed mechanic.

Xbox’s September 2026 update included performance-capture footage featuring Lillis and Schafer. The available announcements do not clarify the current role status of every performer.
What does Xbox cloud technology have to do with OD?
Xbox and Kojima Productions announced their partnership in June 2022, saying the planned game would leverage Xbox cloud technology. At the OD announcement, Kojima said: “We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media.”
Those statements establish cloud technology as part of the project’s partnership and creative ambition. They do not explain which features will use the cloud, whether a particular connection or subscription will be required, or what the final technical requirements will be.
What has been shown about the game?
OD: Knock teaser
Kojima Productions presented a teaser titled OD: Knock at its tenth-anniversary event in 2025. TechRadar reported that it was developed in Unreal Engine 5 and described Kojima’s comments about a new system and repeated testing. This is reported information, not a full official technical specification. The teaser offers a glimpse of the project’s horror presentation, but it does not establish the complete gameplay loop, story or player perspective.
Production updates in 2026
In September 2026, Kojima said performance capture and ADR (additional dialogue recording), which had paused during the SAG strike, had resumed that year and that production was proceeding on schedule. Xbox’s update that month also showed performance-capture footage with Lillis and Schafer.
In an October 5, 2026 interview report, Kojima said filming had resumed in June and would continue through the end of the year, while ADR work would carry into 2027. He also said, “this doesn’t mean we haven’t made the game. I want to keep quiet and release it.” These are production updates and plans, not a release announcement. Kojima added: “I normally put out teaser after teaser. This time I don’t want to reveal much.”

As of the October 2026 coverage cited here, there is no confirmed release date or release window, and the complete platform list has not been established. Do not treat a particular console or PC version as confirmed on the basis of the partnership announcements alone.
The sources also do not establish the game’s full story, specific gameplay mechanics, final player perspective, technical requirements or how cloud technology will be implemented. Kojima has described it as “a completely new kind of game that tests the thresholds of fear,” but that remains a high-level description rather than a detailed account of play.
For now, the clearest picture is of a Kojima Productions horror project with Xbox Game Studios, a fear-focused concept, a mix of game and film ambitions, and production continuing through 2026. More specific claims about how it works or when and where it will launch remain unconfirmed.
