If reSOT will not start, reports missing files, has no sound, produces distorted audio, or shows a black or corrupted picture, troubleshoot in this order: verify that your original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time data is complete and readable, correct Windows and graphics-device settings, then test audio and display changes one at a time. reSOT is an in-progress Windows recompilation that rebuilds the game code while using art, audio, and level data from your own legally obtained original copy. A fix for the Windows environment cannot repair an incomplete or unsupported source dump, and a valid Steam installation does not necessarily prove that a separately copied source folder meets reSOT’s requirements.
What reSOT is—and why the failure type matters
reSOT is described as a native Windows port/recompilation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, developed as an in-progress project by FulGer. Recompilations rebuild executable code but still read original game assets, including art, audio, and level data, from the user’s copy. RecompHub listed 10 GitHub stars in 2026; that number describes the catalog entry at that time, not project maturity or compatibility.

Because the project is unfinished and no authoritative troubleshooting manual, release-note archive, supported-build table, or dump-hash list was identified, treat every build as version-sensitive. Check the project’s current official repository and release notes for the exact build and source format you are using before replacing files or filing a bug.

Record the exact build and source
Write down the reSOT release, commit, or build date shown by the launcher or downloaded archive. Also record which original release supplied the data, where that data is stored, and whether it came from a Steam installation, an optical-disc installation, or a separate dump or copy. Do not assume that two releases with the same game title have identical file layouts.

Make a reversible test plan
Change one setting at a time and try the same action after each change. Keep a short note such as “windowed mode removed the black screen” or “turning enhancements off restored sound.” This prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding the real cause and gives useful evidence if you need to report the problem.
Protect the original files
Keep an untouched backup of the original source. Do not overwrite it with files from another release, an online archive, or a different reSOT build. If a repair requires replacing a file, copy the original to a separate backup first and document what changed.
Use security exceptions sparingly
Security software can block an unfamiliar executable, but an exclusion lowers protection. Add the reSOT folder or executable to an allow list only when you trust the files and understand the risk; remove the exception if it does not solve the launch failure. Never disable protection globally as a first step.

Fixes for a launcher or game that will not start
1. Check the computer against the stated requirements
Start with the requirements published for the original game and the current reSOT build. Confirm that Windows, processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage space, and display support are adequate. If the computer is near a minimum requirement, lower graphics settings after the program opens rather than adding undocumented launch parameters.
A requirement check is a filter, not a proof of compatibility: a machine that meets the original game’s requirements can still fail because reSOT is an in-progress recompilation or because its source data is wrong.
2. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and the latest driver offered for your GPU. Capcom’s official Steam troubleshooting sequence identifies outdated graphics drivers as a possible cause of graphical problems and games that will not start. Restart Windows after the installation, then try reSOT again.

If a normal driver update does not help, use the manufacturer’s clean-install option when available. A clean installation removes or replaces older driver components that can continue to affect a new executable. Record the driver version before and after the change so you can undo or report it accurately.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Select the high-performance GPU on a laptop or dual-GPU PC
Some systems run a new executable on integrated graphics even when a discrete GPU is installed. In Windows graphics settings, add the reSOT executable and select the high-performance GPU. If the project uses a launcher plus a separate game executable, add both when Windows allows it. Restart the program after changing the assignment.
4. Check permissions without permanently weakening Windows
Right-click the launcher and game executable and test Run as administrator when the program cannot read its own folder or create required files. Administrator elevation is a diagnostic step, not a reason to run every game permanently with elevated rights. If elevation changes nothing, return to normal launch and investigate the source path or security software.
5. Remove manually enabled compatibility mode
If you previously enabled a Windows compatibility mode, undo it for both the launcher and the game executable: open the file’s Properties, select Compatibility, clear manually selected compatibility options, apply the change, and retry. Compatibility layers can alter graphics, permissions, or timing in ways an in-progress recompilation does not expect. Do not add a different compatibility mode merely because the first one failed.
6. Test security blocking only after confirming the files
Check your security product’s quarantine and blocked-app history for the launcher or executable. If the files came from a trusted, verified source, allow only the affected file or folder and retry. If the alert identifies a threat or the file origin is uncertain, do not create an exclusion; obtain a clean build from the project’s official distribution instead.
7. Separate a launch problem from a data problem
If the launcher opens but then reports missing data, skip repeated permission changes and go to the source-file checks below. If nothing appears at all, note whether a process briefly appears in Task Manager, whether Windows displays an error, and whether a crash log is created. That first visible failure is more useful than a description such as “it just does not work.”

Fix “missing files” and damaged-source errors
reSOT needs your own original game data
Verify that the source files from your own original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time copy are present, readable, and from a release the current reSOT build supports. The project listing does not publish a complete supported-release matrix or hash table in the available material, so do not guess which files can be substituted. A file with the right name but the wrong release can fail just as surely as a missing file.
Check the source path and readability
- Confirm that the folder selected in reSOT points to the actual original-game data, not merely to the reSOT executable directory.
- Open several folders and files in Explorer to confirm the drive is mounted and readable.
- Check that the source is not on a disconnected external drive, an unavailable network share, or a cloud placeholder that has not been downloaded locally.
- Make sure Windows has not renamed, quarantined, or silently moved a file.
- Avoid changing filenames, extensions, or directory structure unless the current reSOT documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.
Verify a Steam installation
If your original game is installed through Steam, use the exact path Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Capcom explains that Steam compares installed files with its content manifest and downloads replacements when files are missing or have different checksums.
Steam verification repairs the Steam installation it examines. It does not prove that a separately dumped or copied source folder contains every file reSOT expects, nor does it establish that the release is supported by the current recompilation. After verification, point reSOT to the repaired source and test again rather than assuming the paths are identical.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not mix releases or builds
Copying one archive’s data files into another release can create partial success: the program may launch, then fail when a particular level, texture, or sound is requested. Restore the untouched source, use one complete original release, and consult the current project documentation for its required format. Because a public hash list was not established, the safest confirmation is the project’s own current guidance, not a third-party file list.
What to do when the exact required file is unknown
Capture the full error text, the filename and path it names, the reSOT build, and the original-game release. Do not download a random replacement. Ask through the project’s current official issue tracker or support channel, including the requested details, so maintainers can identify whether the message reflects a missing asset, an unsupported release, or a path mistake.
Restore sound, fix silence, and diagnose distorted audio
1. Select the intended Windows output
Open Windows Settings → System → Sound and choose the speakers or headphones you actually want to use. HDMI displays, USB headsets, Bluetooth devices, and monitors can become the active output when they are connected. Play another application to establish whether Windows audio works before changing reSOT.

2. Check mute states, application volume, and the mixer
Confirm the physical connection, device mute button, Windows master volume, and the volume mixer. In Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer, make sure reSOT is not muted and is not assigned to a different output device. If the game has its own volume or music/effects controls, restore those to audible levels.

3. Set the intended device as default
When several outputs are installed, set the selected speakers or headphones as the Windows default device. This is especially important after connecting a monitor over HDMI or switching between USB and Bluetooth. Close and reopen reSOT after changing the default so it can create a new audio session.
4. Turn off audio enhancements
Open the selected device’s properties in Windows Sound settings and disable audio enhancements, then test reSOT. Microsoft states that enhancements can result in audio issues and that disabling them may resolve the problem. If the change has no effect, restore the previous setting and continue; enhancements are not a reSOT-specific diagnosis.
5. Update or reinstall the audio driver
Install Windows updates and restart. Then update the audio driver supplied for your computer or motherboard. If the vendor driver is unstable, Windows’ generic audio driver can be a diagnostic alternative. Reboot after reinstalling and test with the same output device and volume settings.
6. Restart the Windows audio services
Open the Windows Services console and restart these services in turn: Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). RPC supports other Windows components, so do not change its startup configuration; restart the service only when Windows permits it. Test another application after the restart, then test reSOT.
When audio is distorted rather than silent
- Try wired headphones or speakers to separate a Bluetooth or HDMI problem from a game problem.
- Disable enhancements and vendor surround effects before changing sample-rate or exclusive-mode settings.
- Close software that captures, mixes, or routes audio, then retest at a moderate system volume.
- If only reSOT is affected while other applications sound normal, check the game’s volume and output options and preserve the build, Windows version, device, and driver details for an issue report.
No reSOT-specific audio backend or confirmed distortion bug was established, so avoid claiming that a particular API, codec, or launch switch is required.

Fix black screens, flicker, and broken graphics
Update the driver, then use a clean installation if necessary
Install the current GPU driver and restart. If the display remains corrupted, perform a clean installation using the graphics vendor’s installer. Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance identifies driver problems as a source of graphical failures and recommends display-setting adjustments for flicker or blank screens.
Force the correct GPU
On a laptop or dual-GPU desktop, assign both the launcher and game executable to the high-performance GPU in Windows graphics settings. A program that opens on integrated graphics may show a blank or incorrectly rendered frame even though the hardware is otherwise capable.
Regenerate shader data when a cache exists
Close reSOT, locate the shader cache associated with the game or graphics driver only when one is present, and delete the cache files—not the original game assets. Relaunch so the cache can be rebuilt. A first launch may take longer while shaders regenerate. If no identifiable cache exists, do not delete unrelated folders just to follow this step.
Test display changes one at a time
- Switch from fullscreen to windowed mode.
- Lower the resolution to a supported value.
- Disable HDR temporarily.
- Reduce quality settings.
- Retest after each individual change and record the result.
This sequence distinguishes a mode or resource problem from a driver or source-data problem. If one setting restores the picture, keep the working value and report the failing mode with your GPU and driver version. No official reSOT renderer list or launch-flag list was verified, so do not assume an undocumented flag is a supported solution.
Interpret flicker separately from a permanent black screen
Flicker that changes when you switch window modes often points to a display-mode, HDR, refresh-rate, or driver interaction. A black screen immediately after launch can also result from the wrong GPU or an invalid source path. Note whether you can hear menu audio, whether Alt+Tab reveals a running window, and whether the image returns when the window is resized; these observations narrow the next test without altering files.
Choose the right kind of fix
| Change | Reversible? | Use when | Risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windowed mode, lower resolution, lower quality, HDR off | Yes | The program opens but the image is black, flickers, or renders incorrectly | May reduce image quality and does not repair missing source data |
| Output selection, volume mixer, enhancements off | Yes | Sound is silent or routed to the wrong device | Changes Windows behavior for other applications using that device |
| GPU assignment | Yes | A laptop or dual-GPU system chooses integrated graphics | Higher power use on laptops |
| Shader-cache deletion | Usually yes | Rendering is corrupted after a driver or build change | Only delete the identified cache; the first rebuild can be slower |
| Driver clean installation | Usually, with a rollback available | Normal updating fails or corruption persists | Can affect other games and applications; record the old version |
| File replacement or source mixing | No, unless backed up | Only when the project’s current documentation identifies the exact file and release | Can create an unsupported, mixed installation |
| Security exclusion | Yes | A trusted executable is demonstrably blocked | Lowers protection; never use for an untrusted file |
A symptom-based troubleshooting order
- Confirm the build and source. Record the reSOT build, original release, source location, and exact message.
- Try the least invasive platform checks. Update Windows and the GPU driver, select the high-performance GPU where applicable, and remove manually enabled compatibility mode.
- Resolve source errors. Confirm files are readable; verify the Steam installation when relevant; do not mix releases.
- Resolve audio independently. Select the output, check the mixer, disable enhancements, update the driver, and restart the three Windows audio services.
- Resolve rendering independently. Clean-install the GPU driver if needed, regenerate an identified shader cache, and test windowed mode, resolution, HDR, and quality separately.
- Retest from a known state. Close the game, undo unrelated experiments, and reproduce the original symptom with one documented change in place.
What to include in an issue report
Escalate after the checks above fail, but make the report reproducible. Include:
- reSOT build number, release name, or commit;
- the original game release and how its source data was obtained;
- the exact source path and the complete error text or filename;
- Windows edition and version;
- CPU, GPU, current GPU-driver version, and whether the system has integrated and discrete graphics;
- audio device type and driver version when sound is involved;
- display resolution, HDR state, window/fullscreen mode, and any setting that changed the symptom;
- crash log or Windows event information, if produced; and
- the first visible failure, such as “launcher closes immediately,” “missing file named X,” “menu appears with no sound,” or “black screen with audio.”
The exact official issue-tracker address and a supported hash list were not established here. Use the current repository or support channel named by the project, and check its latest contribution or issue guidelines before posting private files or logs.
Final decision guide
A reSOT launch failure that survives driver, GPU, permissions, and compatibility checks should be treated as a possible source-data or build-compatibility issue—not as proof that Windows is broken. A missing-file message calls for a complete, readable original release, not a random download. Silence or distortion calls for Windows output and driver checks before assumptions about reSOT’s audio engine. A black screen or flicker calls for GPU selection, driver and shader-cache checks, and controlled display-mode tests. Keep every change reversible, preserve the original source, and report the exact build and first failure when the project’s own guidance is needed.
