Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a Puppeteer screenshot shows a blank SVG or canvas, check two things independently: whether the graphic is actually rendered and whether the screenshot includes its pixels. Confirm the target exists, is visible, has nonzero dimensions, and falls inside the capture bounds; then wait for the application’s drawing-complete signal. A loaded page or visible element does not prove that client-side drawing has finished.
1. Check that Puppeteer is capturing the expected page and element
Start by confirming the browser is on the intended URL and that the SVG or canvas is in the frame you are inspecting. Check the browser console and failed network requests for clues such as script errors or missing image assets; these are useful diagnostics, not proof of a particular cause.

Wait for the target element, then inspect its visibility and bounding rectangle. Puppeteer’s waitForSelector can wait for presence and, with visible: true, visibility. An element screenshot scrolls the element into view when necessary, but neither operation guarantees that its pixels have been drawn.

const selector = '#chart';
await page.waitForSelector(selector, { visible: true });
const box = await page.$eval(selector, element => {
const rect = element.getBoundingClientRect();
return {
tag: element.tagName,
width: rect.width,
height: rect.height,
top: rect.top,
left: rect.left,
right: rect.right,
bottom: rect.bottom
};
});
console.log(box);
A zero-width or zero-height box points to layout, CSS, or markup to investigate. A nonzero box only establishes geometry; it does not establish that a canvas contains pixels or that an SVG has visible shapes.

2. Rule out screenshot clipping and viewport bounds
page.screenshot() captures the page, while an element handle’s screenshot() targets one element. Compare the two: if the graphic appears in the whole-page image but not the element image, inspect the target and capture bounds. If it is missing from both, investigate rendering or readiness.
Review clip, fullPage, captureBeyondViewport, and viewport size. Puppeteer documents fullPage: false and captureBeyondViewport: false as defaults when no clip is specified. A target outside the captured region can therefore be absent even when rendered.
// Capture the page, then the target, to compare scope.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
const chart = await page.$('#chart');
if (!chart) throw new Error('Target #chart was not found');
await chart.screenshot({ path: 'chart.png' });
For a page-level capture, temporarily remove a custom clip and try fullPage: true if the graphic may be below the viewport. Do not assume that expanding the screenshot fixes an element that has not rendered.

3. Verify the canvas dimensions and pixels
Canvas has intrinsic dimensions in its width and height attributes, separate from its CSS display size. Inspect both. A canvas with zero dimensions—or dimensions above the browser’s maximum canvas size—returns data:, from toDataURL(). If the canvas is not origin-clean, reading it throws a SecurityError.
const canvasInfo = await page.$eval('canvas#chart', canvas => {
let dataUrlStatus;
try {
const value = canvas.toDataURL();
dataUrlStatus = value === 'data:,' ? 'empty-or-too-large' : 'data-url-created';
} catch (error) {
dataUrlStatus = `${error.name}: ${error.message}`;
}
return {
width: canvas.width,
height: canvas.height,
cssWidth: getComputedStyle(canvas).width,
cssHeight: getComputedStyle(canvas).height,
dataUrlStatus
};
});
console.log(canvasInfo);
This is a diagnostic, not a way to capture the screenshot. Avoid logging the full data URL: it can be very large. A SecurityError indicates a readback restriction; it does not by itself prove the canvas looks blank in the browser. Investigate the image or other cross-origin content drawn into it and the applicable origin/CORS setup.
4. Wait for drawing to finish, not just navigation
Navigation completion and visual completion are different. A page can finish loading while application JavaScript is still fetching data, building an SVG, or painting canvas pixels. Puppeteer’s element and locator checks can establish presence, visibility, or layout stability, but they cannot know when application-specific drawing is complete.

Prefer a signal the application sets after its render finishes, such as a documented global flag or a readiness attribute. The page must implement that signal at the point where drawing is complete. Use waitForFunction to wait for it before capturing:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsawait page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('#chart', { visible: true });
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.chartRenderComplete === true);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });
networkidle2 is a navigation option, not a guarantee that later client-side drawing has finished. The example’s window.chartRenderComplete flag is illustrative: replace it with a real signal provided by the page. If you control the application, set the flag only after the relevant SVG updates or canvas drawing calls have completed.
When there is no application signal, use a condition tied to the page’s actual data or render state if possible. A fixed delay may help isolate a timing issue, but it is less reliable: it can be unnecessarily long on a fast run and still too short on a slow one.

5. Make sure source images have loaded before drawing
If the canvas is populated from an image, including an SVG used as an image source, wait for that image’s load event before calling drawImage(). Calling drawImage() before image loading finishes does not draw it. When an SVG is used as an image, MDN’s guidance says to give its root <svg> explicit width and height.
const image = new Image();
image.onload = () => {
canvas.width = image.naturalWidth;
canvas.height = image.naturalHeight;
context.drawImage(image, 0, 0);
window.chartRenderComplete = true;
};
image.onerror = () => {
window.chartRenderError = 'Image failed to load';
};
image.src = '/assets/chart.svg';
Adapt this pattern to the application’s actual loading code. If the image fails, a screenshot wait for successful rendering should fail clearly or use an explicit error state rather than silently capturing an empty canvas.
6. A practical diagnostic order
- Confirm page and frame: verify the URL and inspect console errors and failed requests.
- Check target geometry: wait for the selector; inspect visibility, bounding rectangle, and whether another element covers it.
- Check capture scope: compare a page screenshot and an element screenshot; review clipping, full-page settings, and viewport dimensions.
- Inspect canvas integrity: read intrinsic dimensions and cautiously test
toDataURL(), notingdata:,or a possibleSecurityError. - Verify assets: if images feed the canvas, confirm they load before
drawImage(); give image SVG roots explicit dimensions. - Wait for the app’s render: capture only after its meaningful completion condition, not merely after navigation or element visibility.
- Capture again: use the page and element approaches to identify whether the fault is rendering or capture boundaries.
7. Or skip the browser setup
For an API alternative, ScreenshotNeo is worth trying first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. That does not repair a site whose SVG or canvas never renders, but it avoids running your own browser capture stack for supported screenshot jobs. One GET request returns an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API docs.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does waiting for network idle guarantee that canvas drawing is finished?
No. Network-idle navigation does not establish that client-side drawing has completed. Wait for an application-specific render signal.
What does `data:,` from `canvas.toDataURL()` mean?
The canvas has zero dimensions or dimensions above the browser’s maximum canvas size.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can `canvas.toDataURL()` throw a SecurityError?
The canvas is not origin-clean, commonly because content drawn into it is subject to cross-origin readback restrictions.
