Start with the path named in the full error. If page.screenshot({ path }) cannot write its image, check the resolved output path, whether its parent directory exists, and whether the Linux user running Node can write there. If the error occurs before capture while Chrome starts, investigate Chrome’s profile, configuration, or cache paths instead; those are separate permission problems.
Identify which operation received EACCES
EACCES means an operation was denied access, but it does not by itself identify a screenshot-output problem. Read the complete error and stack trace, including the path and operation. An error for opening or writing the image points to the destination. An error while loading configuration or launching Chrome points elsewhere.

- Screenshot write: the denied path is the image path, and the failure occurs when Puppeteer tries to save the capture.
- Configuration or browser startup: the denied path belongs to Puppeteer or Chrome runtime files, and capture may not have started.
For example, an issue report gives EACCES: permission denied, open '/.config/puppeteerrc'. That names a configuration file, not a screenshot destination, so changing the image directory alone would not address that error.

Resolve the exact path Puppeteer uses
Check the path passed to page.screenshot(). The Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions API documentation (version 25.12.0) states: “If path is a relative path, then it is resolved relative to current working directory.” A service, container, or CI job may have a different working directory from the shell where you tested the script.

For instance, if the script passes screenshots/page.png, determine the process working directory and inspect the resulting parent directory—not a similarly named directory elsewhere. The parent directory must already exist, and the Node process identity must be allowed to write there.
Check the runtime identity and directory
Inspect the account under which the Node process actually runs, then check the destination directory’s existence, ownership, and permissions for that account. This matters when a script works in a developer shell but fails under a service manager, CI runner, or container, where the runtime user or working directory can differ.

Make the intended output directory writable by the runtime user, or choose a directory that user can write to. Avoid solving the error by making an entire filesystem broadly writable; grant access only where the screenshots need to be saved.

Return image data instead of saving directly
If your application can store or transmit the capture itself, omit path and handle the returned screenshot data. Puppeteer documents that omitting path means the image is not saved to disk. This avoids Puppeteer writing to the target path, though your own code still needs appropriate permissions wherever it later stores the bytes.

When Chrome cannot access its runtime files
Chrome writes profile, configuration, and cache files during startup. In a read-only container or one with restricted mounts, those locations may not be writable by the account launching Node. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide describes setting writable XDG configuration and cache locations and an explicit userDataDir, or mounting writable directories owned by the runtime user.
Use the denied path and the stage of failure to guide the fix: change the screenshot destination when the image write is denied; make Chrome’s runtime locations writable when startup file access is denied. Do not assume that changing one fixes the other.

Other Linux launch failures to distinguish
Missing shared libraries
If Chrome still will not launch after checking writable runtime paths, missing browser dependencies may be the cause rather than filesystem permissions. Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guidance suggests checking the Chrome binary’s dependencies with:

Sandbox errors
Sandbox failures are also distinct from a denied screenshot-output path. Diagnose the browser’s sandbox configuration on its own. Puppeteer strongly discourages running Chrome without a sandbox as a casual workaround, so do not add --no-sandbox as a generic response to EACCES.

Does EACCES always mean Puppeteer cannot write the screenshot?
No. The path and failing operation in the complete error determine whether the denied access concerns the image, Puppeteer configuration, or Chrome startup files.
Can I save a Puppeteer screenshot without specifying a path?
Yes. Omit the path option and handle the returned image data in your application instead of having Puppeteer save it directly.
