How to Take a Puppeteer Screenshot of a WebGL Page

Use Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() after the page’s WebGL application signals that its scene is ready. Waiting for navigation alone—even with networkidle2—does not guarantee the canvas has rendered the frame you want. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide identifies Page.screenshot() as the page capture API: Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Capture a WebGL page after its scene is ready

Install Puppeteer in your project, then navigate to the page, wait for an application-specific readiness signal, and take the screenshot. The following example uses a fictional global flag; replace it with a real signal exposed by your page.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/webgl-page', {
    waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
  });

  // Replace this illustrative flag with the page's actual ready signal.
  await page.waitForFunction(() => window.webglSceneReady === true);

  await page.screenshot({ path: 'webgl-page.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

networkidle2 is a navigation wait, not a universal WebGL-render-complete test. Prefer a readiness marker documented by the application, a DOM element that appears when the scene is ready, or an application-controlled render-complete event. The example’s window.webglSceneReady is not a Puppeteer or browser API. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Choose the Chrome headless mode

Puppeteer’s default headless: true launches Chrome’s newer headless mode. Setting headless: 'shell' launches the separate chrome-headless-shell binary. Puppeteer notes that shell does not completely match regular Chrome behavior and can be more performant for automation that does not need the full Chrome feature set. Neither mode is a universal best choice for WebGL; compare the output in the environment where captures will run. See Puppeteer headless modes.

Default headless mode

Start with Puppeteer’s default unless you have a reason to use the shell binary. This is the mode launched by headless: true (also the default setting).

Headless shell and GPU acceleration

If you choose chrome-headless-shell and need GPU acceleration, Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide says to pass --enable-gpu:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
  headless: 'shell',
  args: ['--enable-gpu'],
});

This enables the documented GPU option for shell mode; it does not guarantee that the host has a working GPU or suitable drivers, or that a particular WebGL page will render identically. Chrome generally detects and enables GPU when the system has appropriate drivers. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the browser build consistent

Puppeteer says it works best with its bundled Chrome for Testing and does not guarantee compatibility with other browser versions. If rendering differs between environments, first compare the browser build and mode before adding flags. A headful run can also help distinguish a headless-specific difference when the environment permits it. See Puppeteer configuration.

Capture the full page or only the WebGL canvas

By default, page.screenshot() captures the viewport. Use fullPage: true to capture the full document; screenshot options also include image type, clipping, capture beyond the viewport, and background handling. PNG is the documented default image type. See Puppeteer screenshot options.

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'webgl-full-page.png',
  type: 'png',
  fullPage: true,
});

To save just a canvas, wait for the correct element and call ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed, then captures it through the page screenshot mechanism. If the page contains multiple canvases, use a selector specific to the scene rather than assuming the first canvas is the right one.

const canvas = await page.waitForSelector('canvas.webgl-scene');
if (!canvas) throw new Error('WebGL canvas was not found');

await canvas.screenshot({ path: 'webgl-canvas.png' });

Check the output dimensions and framing if the canvas is scaled or placed in a responsive layout. See Puppeteer ElementHandle screenshot.

Diagnose blank or stale WebGL screenshots

  1. Confirm which headless binary ran. The default launches newer headless Chrome; headless: 'shell' selects a separate binary with different behavior. Compare modes if the capture does not match expectations.
  2. If using shell mode, enable GPU and check the host. Add --enable-gpu when GPU acceleration is needed, then verify that the runtime has suitable graphics drivers. The flag cannot supply missing hardware or drivers.
  3. Wait for scene readiness, not just navigation. A page can be network-idle while its application is still preparing or drawing the WebGL scene. Use the page’s actual ready marker or event.
  4. Check for a lost WebGL context. WebGLRenderingContext.isContextLost() reports whether a context is lost. MDN lists GPU resource demand, switching graphics processors, a stalled GPU operation, and a driver update among possible causes. See MDN: isContextLost().
  5. Listen for context-loss events in page code. The webglcontextlost event signals that the browser detected loss of the drawing buffer associated with the WebGL context. The application may need to restore resources and redraw after context restoration. See MDN: webglcontextlost event.
  6. Use Puppeteer’s supported browser pairing. Its bundled Chrome for Testing is the best-supported choice; compatibility with other browser versions is not guaranteed. See Puppeteer configuration.

Inspect the canvas context

For a quick diagnostic, page code or an injected script can check whether a canvas exists and whether a context appears lost. Adapt the selector and context type to the application:

const diagnostics = await page.evaluate(() => {
  const canvas = document.querySelector('canvas.webgl-scene');
  if (!canvas) return { canvasFound: false };

  const gl = canvas.getContext('webgl2') || canvas.getContext('webgl');
  if (!gl) return { canvasFound: true, webglContextFound: false };

  return {
    canvasFound: true,
    webglContextFound: true,
    contextLost: gl.isContextLost(),
  };
});

console.log(diagnostics);

This reports only whether the script found a canvas and obtained a context, plus the context’s loss state at that moment. It cannot establish that the intended frame rendered. Calling getContext() with a type different from the one used by the application can also mislead; for reliable diagnosis, instrument the actual application context or use a page-provided status signal. MDN documents the meaning of isContextLost() at isContextLost().

Avoid unrelated launch flags

Do not treat arbitrary Chromium flags as a first fix for a blank image. Establish the mode, graphics support, render readiness, and context state first. Puppeteer discusses --no-sandbox for specific Linux sandbox failures and strongly discourages running without the sandbox; it is not a WebGL screenshot fix. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.

Performance and reliability considerations

  • Choose the mode for compatibility first. Puppeteer describes shell as potentially more performant for automation that does not need the full Chrome feature set, but the documentation does not establish a universally faster or more reliable mode for WebGL captures.
  • Use a meaningful readiness condition. Waiting for network idle may be useful during navigation, but an application signal is more directly tied to the desired rendered scene.
  • Keep browser versions aligned. Using Puppeteer’s bundled Chrome for Testing avoids relying on an unguaranteed pairing with a different browser version.
  • Do not assume GPU availability from a flag. Actual acceleration still depends on graphics support in the capture environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Puppeteer’s networkidle2 wait guarantee that WebGL has rendered?

No. It is a navigation wait, not an application-specific signal that the desired WebGL frame is ready. Use a readiness condition supplied by the page.

Will --enable-gpu fix every blank WebGL screenshot?

No. It is Puppeteer’s documented GPU-acceleration argument for chrome-headless-shell; a working graphics environment and a rendered, non-lost WebGL context are still necessary.
