If one PS5 Pro game looks blurry or runs poorly, first compare the graphics modes offered by that game. If menus or several games also look wrong, check the console’s video-output signal and HDMI connection instead. The right fix depends on whether the problem comes from a game’s rendering choices or the display signal—not every title supports the same modes or enhancements.
First, find out whether the problem affects one game or everything
Check whether the PS5 menus, multiple games, or other video sources look wrong. If the symptom is limited to one game, start with that title’s graphics settings and updates. If it appears across games or in the console interface, inspect the video-output settings and display connection.

PS5 Pro features are not universal across games. A title may not offer both Performance and Resolution modes, and PSSR support depends on the game. Sony also notes that select games support 8K, rather than describing it as a mode available in every title. Sony’s game preset guide explains that presets apply only to games that offer the relevant options.
Why does one PS5 Pro game look blurry or run poorly?
Compare the game’s graphics modes
If the game offers Performance and Resolution modes, compare them in the game’s own settings. Sony describes Performance Mode as prioritizing smoother motion and Resolution Mode as prioritizing higher graphic quality. Try Performance Mode when motion looks choppy; try Resolution Mode when image detail is the main concern. Names and trade-offs vary by game, so treat this as a test, not a guaranteed fix. Some titles may not offer these modes.

Check for a game update and title-specific guidance
When only one title is affected, check whether it has an available update and consult the publisher’s current support notes. A general console setting cannot diagnose a particular game’s patch, rendering behavior, or known issue.
How to make PS5 Pro games look sharper: check video output
If several games or the PS5 interface look wrong, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Current Video Output Signal and Resolution first, then check VRR, 120 Hz Output, HDR, and Video Transfer Rate as they relate to your display and symptom. Sony says Automatic resolution selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. You can read its PS5 resolution guide for the available output options.
A 4K/120 Hz signal requires support from the console, game, display, HDMI port, and connection path. Selecting a setting cannot make an unsupported mode available.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Video Transfer Rate only for 4K flicker
If the image flickers with 4K output, Sony suggests setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 as a troubleshooting step; limiting output may improve the picture. These options can reduce available output modes, so they are not general sharpness settings.
Test 120 Hz and VRR when they cause display problems
If 120 Hz output causes video problems on a monitor or another display, turn 120 Hz Output off as a test. If unexpected behavior occurs when VRR is applied to unsupported games, Sony advises turning VRR off. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which, if any, affects the symptom.
Check the HDMI cable, port, and display settings
For a missing, flickering, or unexpectedly limited signal, isolate the connection before changing game settings. Sony’s resolution troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the cable, TV port, and display settings; its support guidance also points to removing intermediary equipment when troubleshooting a TV connection.

- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and confirm it is connected to a port on the TV or monitor that supports the output you want.
- Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the display while troubleshooting. Temporarily remove a receiver, splitter, or capture device from the signal path.
- Confirm that the display supports the selected resolution and refresh rate, and enable any TV setting required for high-resolution or high-refresh-rate input.
- Check for and install display firmware updates if the manufacturer provides them.
- Use the cable included with the PS5, or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz, if the existing cable is unsuitable or suspect.
A replacement cable can address a signal-path problem; it will not improve a game’s internal resolution, image reconstruction, or frame rate when the signal is already working correctly.

Adjust PS5 Pro image enhancements only when they apply
PSSR for compatible games
On PS5 Pro, Enhance PSSR Image Quality is under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says it is on by default for certain PSSR-compatible games and can be turned off if image behavior is unexpected. It is not a universal setting for blur, and changing it will not affect games that do not support it. See Sony’s PS5 Pro video-output guidance for details.
Image enhancement for PS4 games
Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games is a separate PS5 Pro option for PS4 titles, not PS5-native games. Sony says it applies to the CFI-7000 model group and requires a screen supporting 2160p (4K) or 1440p at 60 Hz. If a PS4 game behaves unexpectedly with the option enabled, turn it off and compare. The relevant details are in Sony’s PS4 game image-quality guide and PS5 Pro troubleshooting guide.
Use Safe Mode only for persistent system-level performance problems
If performance drops persist across the system after checking game settings and the display path, Sony lists Clear System Software Cache as an option for system-feature issues or performance drops. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database; Sony describes it as useful for system-feature issues or stale game icons. Neither is a documented guaranteed fix for a particular game’s graphics quality.
To enter Safe Mode, turn off the console, then press and hold the power button again until you hear the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Review Sony’s Safe Mode instructions before choosing an option. Some Safe Mode choices erase data; reset and reinstall options are destructive, so do not use them as routine picture-quality troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to contact Sony or the game publisher
If only one game remains blurry or unstable after comparing its modes and checking for updates, consult that game’s publisher: the issue may depend on its current implementation or patch. If the console still has output trouble after checking the display, cable, and settings, use Sony’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting guide or contact PlayStation Support for repair options. Sony lists TV connection, flicker, overheating, and 8K image issues as separate troubleshooting topics.
