In the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, no extraction route is guaranteed safe. Before calling a standard exfil, coordinate your squad: activating it reveals the site to rival squads and draws AI combatants. If that site is too exposed, consider a Hostage Rescue, a purchasable Private Exfil, or—under the original mode’s specific conditions—a fueled Heavy Chopper. These instructions describe legacy Warzone 2.0 DMZ, not the forthcoming Modern Warfare 4 mode.
First, identify which DMZ you are playing
Activision announced that Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is planned to launch on October 23, 2026. Its preview describes helicopter and skyhook extraction options, but Activision’s available material as of October 7, 2026 does not specify the controls, signaling rules, timers, or rescue procedures. Do not assume the legacy steps below apply to that mode. Activision’s June 2026 preview and its October 2026 guide describe the new experience without resolving those details.

The procedures in this article are for the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ. Activision described that mode as an action extraction shooter; the threat at an extraction point is part of the risk, not a guarantee that another squad will attack. Joe Cecot, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director, described DMZ as “an action extraction shooter” in a June 2026 Xbox Wire interview.
What to do when the squad needs to leave
- Agree to extract before anyone triggers the site. Set a plan for who calls the exfil, who watches likely approaches, who handles AI, and who covers a teammate needing help. In original DMZ, calling an exfil marks its location on every squad’s Tac Map and prompts AI combatants to swarm the area. Activision’s November 2022 overview documents these mechanics.
- Stop taking optional risks once the squad commits to leaving. The original mode’s overview says death costs Operators the contents of their Backpack. That makes extra looting a poor trade when the team is already under pressure and has decided to extract.
- Call the exfil only when the squad is ready to hold it. Expect both AI pressure and the possibility that another squad responds to the public Tac Map marker. Stay able to cover approaches while the aircraft arrives and the team boards; an announced extraction is not a private or protected one.
- Account for a downed or killed teammate. In the original squad-based mode, teammates could revive downed Operators, and a killed teammate could be revived at the death location through a longer process. Recovery can preserve squad strength, but it keeps the team committed to that exposed location; attempt it only if others can cover the revive.

Activision’s Season 03 overview describes the Private Exfil and Heavy Chopper additions. The official descriptions do not quantify travel distance, time, or the chance of encountering enemies for these routes.

Use final exfil only as the last escape window
In the original mode, final exfil becomes available after the marked exfil points are used. It still requires calling the helicopter, and the site can attract enemies. Because the aircraft departs after a short window and remaining Operators are listed MIA, avoid treating it as a dependable plan A: if a usable earlier option is available, leaving before the final window avoids relying on that last opportunity.

How to choose under pressure
- The squad can defend a public site: Coordinate roles, then call the standard exfil together.
- The standard site is known to be exposed: Check whether a Hostage Rescue, Private Exfil, or fueled Heavy Chopper route is available in the original mode. Each has its own objective or resource requirement and none is guaranteed uncontested.
- A teammate is down: Revive only when the rest of the squad can cover the attempt. A longer recovery for a killed teammate increases the time the squad remains at the location.
- Only final exfil remains: Treat the short aircraft window as a hard deadline and prioritize reaching and boarding it over further looting.
