Start with a Windows restart, pending Windows and graphics-driver updates, a file-integrity check, and a requirements check. Then run the game without overlays, capture utilities, monitoring tools, ReShade, or audio enhancers. If the error names the PlayStation PC SDK, repair that runtime separately. Only after these software checks should you consider a hardware upgrade or wait for a publisher patch.
Identify the failure before changing anything
The symptom narrows the likely cause. A game that closes immediately is usually a launch, file, runtime, security-software, or requirement problem. Intermittent hitching during play more often points to shader compilation, driver behavior, video-memory pressure, or software injected into the game. A message mentioning the PlayStation PC SDK is a distinct runtime issue, not a generic graphics crash.

Record the exact game edition, launcher, Windows version, GPU model, driver version, and the point at which the failure occurs. A repeatable description is more useful to support than “it crashes sometimes.”
Run the clean-baseline checklist first
Steam Support says immediate launch crashes commonly result from configuration causes that players can resolve themselves. Its checklist prioritizes updates, disabling non-essential software, file verification, and checking requirements rather than an immediate reinstall. Use this order so each test changes one variable at a time.

- Restart Windows. A restart clears a driver or launcher process left in a bad state. Do not merely close the game window and reopen it.
- Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, apply available updates, restart when requested, and return to the page until it reports that the system is current.
- Install the current driver for your GPU. Use the graphics manufacturer’s official driver package for your model and Windows edition. Choose the clean-install or reset option when the installer offers one, then restart.
- Update the launcher. Let Steam or Epic Games finish its own update before starting the title. An outdated launcher can prevent authentication, SDK installation, or patch delivery.
- Close non-essential software. Quit overlays, recording and streaming apps, performance monitors, RGB utilities, visual filters, and audio-enhancement suites for the diagnostic run.
- Verify the game installation. Use the platform-specific procedure below before deleting or reinstalling the entire game.
- Check the exact PC requirements. Compare your CPU, GPU, system RAM, video memory, storage, and DirectX support with the publisher’s minimum and recommended specifications for that port.
Launch after the restart and again after each major change. If the title works, re-enable closed utilities one at a time; the first one that brings the problem back is your leading suspect.
Verify files in Steam or Epic Games
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Allow Steam to reacquire missing or damaged files, then restart Steam before testing.
Corrupted or incompletely extracted files can make a game crash immediately. Verification normally repairs only what is wrong, so it is a better first step than a full download.
Epic Games
- Open the Epic Games launcher and go to Library.
- Use the three-dot menu beside the title and choose Manage.
- Select Verify, wait for the check and any replacement downloads, then relaunch the game.
If verification reports no problem, do not repeat it indefinitely. Move to driver, overlay, requirements, SDK, controller, or patch-level testing instead.
Remove software that injects into the game
Nixxes reports that overlay and visual-enhancement software, especially software that hooks into the game process, can cause stuttering, freezing, unexpected crashes, and other performance problems. For one controlled test, exit the following categories completely rather than merely hiding their on-screen widgets:

- OBS or another capture and streaming application
- ReShade and other post-processing injectors
- Overwolf and similar in-game overlays
- RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS), MSI Afterburner, and other frame-rate or hardware monitors
- GPU overlay and filter features, including NVIDIA Filters
- Third-party audio-enhancement, chat-overlay, macro, and peripheral-control utilities
- Windows Game Bar and any launcher overlay you can disable for the test
Close the applications from their notification-area icons and check Task Manager if a helper process remains. Start the game with no capture, overlay, filter, monitoring, or audio hook active. If stability returns, re-enable one tool at a time and leave the conflicting feature disabled or update that utility before using it again.
Match settings and memory use to the port’s requirements
A PC port can fail when the computer is at or below the published minimum, and a machine that meets the minimum can still run out of video memory at high settings. Compare the exact edition’s requirements, not the specifications for a console or a different release. Check all of these fields:
- CPU model and instruction-set support
- GPU model, driver support, and dedicated VRAM
- System RAM
- Free storage and the drive’s available space
- DirectX version and Windows edition
- Any publisher-specific requirement such as an online service or controller support
When the game launches but stutters or crashes in demanding scenes, reduce the settings that consume the most memory first:

- Lower texture quality and texture streaming limits.
- Disable ray tracing or reduce its quality.
- Lower output resolution or the internal resolution scale.
- Turn off frame generation while diagnosing instability; add it back only after the base render path is stable.
- Restart the game after changing several memory-heavy settings so the new allocation is applied cleanly.
Do not treat a single crash as proof that a new GPU, more RAM, or an SSD is required. Upgrade only when the published requirements or observed memory use show a sustained shortfall after software isolation. A faster drive may reduce loading time, but it cannot repair a blocked runtime or an overlay conflict.

Repair a PlayStation PC SDK error
The PlayStation PC SDK supplies online features and the PlayStation overlay. Nixxes identifies security software blocking the SDK as a possible cause and provides a separate repair path.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows builds).
- Search for PlayStation PC SDK Runtime. If it is present, note whether Windows offers a repair or modify action.
- Check your antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine and blocked-application history. Restore or allow the SDK only if you trust the game installation and your security product confirms the block.
- If the runtime is missing or damaged, open the game’s installation folder from the launcher.
- Look for the supplied SDK installer or batch file and run it as directed by the game publisher. Steam and Epic releases may place the installer in different subfolders.
- Restart Windows and test the game before changing other variables.
Do not download a replacement runtime from an unofficial site. If the installer fails, preserve the exact error and the security-product event for a support request.
Test controllers, Steam Input, and Bluetooth devices

- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Controller, and toggle the per-game Steam Input setting. Test once with Steam Input enabled and once with it disabled.
- Use a different USB port, preferably a direct port on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
- For a wireless controller, test a wired connection and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices.
- Launch the game after each change and record which combination works.
A controller-only failure can be a game defect rather than a damaged controller. Keep the working configuration for play, then report the reproducible combination to the publisher.

Check for a game-side patch before buying hardware
Publishers sometimes fix failures that no local setting can remove. Read the current patch notes for the exact game and PC launcher. Nixxes’ Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PC Patch 8, published February 19, 2026, fixed a startup crash involving Bluetooth audio on Epic and a crash related to Steam Input, along with broader stability improvements. That example shows why a failure tied to a particular device or input mode may require a patch rather than a new component.
Nixxes’ overlay guidance and PlayStation PC SDK troubleshooting article were updated February 9, 2026. Its The Last of Us Part II Remastered PC support guidance was updated March 11, 2026. Dates matter: a fix described in an older post may already be included in a newer build, while a newly reported regression may not yet have a workaround.
Signs that a patch is the realistic fix
- The same crash happens on multiple computers with different GPUs.
- The failure began immediately after a game update and persists with verified files and a clean driver.
- Patch notes mention the same controller, Bluetooth, launcher, or scene.
- Support staff can reproduce the failure from a supplied save or set of steps.
Collect evidence for a support ticket
After file verification and a clean graphics-driver installation, provide evidence that lets the developer reproduce the failure. For The Last of Us Part II Remastered PC, Nixxes specifically asks for the game’s log, a crash dump, DxDiag, the affected save when applicable, and the in-game crash report when it appears.

- Game log: copy the current log after reproducing the crash, before launching again if the game overwrites it.
- Crash dump: attach the
.mdmpfile generated at the failure time. - DxDiag: press
Win+R, enterdxdiag, choose Save All Information, and attach the resultingDxDiag.txt. - Save file: include the affected save only when the publisher requests it and remove personal information from the ticket.
- In-game report: submit it when the crash dialog offers that option, then reference the report time in your ticket.
- Reproduction steps: list the launcher, game build, controller and audio connection, graphics settings, and the shortest sequence that causes the failure.
Do not attach unrelated screenshots in place of diagnostic files. A concise timeline—what changed, what you tested, and what still fails—prevents support from repeating steps you already completed.

This order preserves evidence and avoids spending money on a hardware change that cannot fix a missing runtime, corrupted file, or software conflict.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
Reinstalling before verifying
A full reinstall takes time and can reintroduce the same launcher, driver, or overlay condition. Verify files first and keep the existing logs.
Changing several settings at once
If you update the driver, install a new overlay, change five graphics options, and swap controllers simultaneously, you cannot identify the cause. Use one controlled change per test.
Leaving monitoring tools active while testing
A hidden tray process can still inject into the game. Exit the tool and its helper process, then confirm in Task Manager before launching.
Assuming “meets minimum” means “runs every setting”
Minimum requirements describe a baseline configuration, not unlimited texture, ray-tracing, or resolution settings. Start with the recommended preset or lower memory-heavy options when the port reports instability.
Ignoring launcher differences
A fix for Steam Input, Epic Bluetooth audio, or an SDK installer path may apply only to one launcher. Record which platform you use when reading patch notes or contacting support.
A practical decision path
- Fails before a menu appears: restart, update Windows and the GPU driver, verify files, and check requirements.
- Still fails immediately: close every overlay, capture, monitor, filter, and audio hook; then test again.
- An SDK message appears: inspect PlayStation PC SDK Runtime, security blocks, and the installer in the game folder.
- Only a controller or wireless device triggers it: toggle Steam Input, isolate one controller, and test wired.
- Runs but hitches or crashes in heavy scenes: lower texture quality, ray tracing, resolution, and frame generation, then compare memory use with the port’s requirements.
- Nothing changes after a clean baseline: read current patch notes and submit logs, the dump, DxDiag, save, and reproduction steps.
This sequence separates reversible software tests from expensive hardware decisions and gives a developer enough information to fix a genuine port defect.
