If your PS5 headset has no sound or its microphone is not working, first check the console’s audio output, volume, and mute settings. Then check the headset connection, wireless interference, and model-specific charging or reset instructions; not every headset is compatible with PS5, and controls vary by model.
1. Check audio output and volume
- On PS5, go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the headset as the Output Device. Menu wording and available options can vary by device and system version.
- If available, check Output to Headphones and choose the routing you want.
- Go to Settings > Sound > Volume and raise the headphone volume. Also check the headset’s own volume control.
- For a wired headset, make sure the plug is fully seated in the controller jack and look for visible cable damage.
Sony says automatic device switching can be enabled when an audio device is connected. If the headset does not appear or work, check its PS5 compatibility with the device maker: Sony notes that not all audio devices work with the console.

2. Check mute and microphone settings
- Press the DualSense controller’s MUTE button to check whether the microphone or speakers were muted. Press it again to restore the prior state.
- On PS5, open Settings > Sound > Microphone. Confirm the intended Input Device and check Adjust Microphone Level.
- Check the headset’s own mute control. On PULSE Elite, extend the retractable microphone; Sony says its mute indicator is lit when the mic is muted and unlit when it is on.
3. Reconnect wireless headsets and check audio balance
- Make sure the wireless headset’s USB adapter is firmly connected, then power-cycle the headset.
- Remove unused wireless adapters and move other wireless devices away from the adapter. If sound skips or the connection drops, Sony recommends removing USB 3.0 devices from the console; if that is not practical, use a USB extension cable to separate the adapter from other USB devices.
- If you hear only game or chat audio on a PULSE 3D, adjust the CHAT/GAME balance controls. Sony says pressing both together resets the balance.
- If other players hear echo, reduce the microphone level by two to four notches, as Sony recommends.
- If the issue remains, follow the reset and re-pairing instructions for your exact headset model. Reset procedures are not universal.
4. Check charging, model-specific resets, and support
- If a wireless headset may be out of power, charge it using the method recommended for that model.
- For the PULSE 3D, Platinum, and Gold models covered on Sony’s support page, try another supported USB port or device and a different USB cable if charging fails. Sony says those listed models may take up to 3.5 hours to fully charge; that estimate does not apply to every headset.
- For PULSE Elite, Sony instructs users with PS Link problems to hold the PlayStation Link button for at least 10 seconds until the headset powers off, then press the button to turn it on. Update PS Link device and adapter software and re-pair if needed. Do not use this reset procedure for other models.
- If the documented checks fail, or a cable, controller jack, adapter, or headset appears damaged, contact PlayStation Support/Repairs or the headset maker.
FAQ
Why is my PS5 headset connected but there is no sound?
Check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the headset as the output device. Raise headphone volume in the PS5 settings and on the headset, and confirm any available headphone-routing setting is correct.

Why is my PS5 headset microphone not working?

Why does my wireless PS5 headset disconnect or skip?
Reseat its USB wireless adapter, power-cycle the headset, and move other wireless devices away. Sony also recommends removing USB 3.0 devices from the console or using a USB extension cable to create distance from them.
Will any headset work with PS5?
No. Sony advises checking compatibility and use with the device maker because not all audio devices work with PS5. Verify compatibility and any required adapter for your exact headset model.
