If the Slack-Skinned Head in Baldur’s Gate 3 leaves your character stuck and dialogue fails to start after you insert a brain, try a full game restart and then use the pedestal’s option to insert the brain. Players have also reported graphics-setting and other workarounds, but none is a guaranteed fix; save before trying the interaction when possible.
What happens with the Slack-Skinned Head bug?
A player report on Steam dated August 11, 2023 described inserting a brain, attempting to speak to the head, and having the character get stuck without dialogue. The player said they had to reload a save. This is a documented report, not evidence of how often the issue occurs today.

Workarounds to try
These steps come from community reports, not controlled testing. Try the lower-effort options first. Results varied, and some players reported that restarting or changing graphics APIs did not help.

1. Restart the game
- Save before approaching the head if you can.
- Quit Baldur’s Gate 3 fully and restart it.
- Load your save and try the interaction again.
Several posters said a full restart helped, although reloading a save alone did not help one reporter.

2. Use the pedestal’s insert option
- Interact with the pedestal near the Slack-Skinned Head.
- Choose the option to insert the brain there rather than placing it directly on the head.
- Try speaking to the head again.
One player reported that using the pedestal triggered the dialogue event.
3. Try the other graphics API on PC
- In the launcher or game settings, switch between Vulkan and DX11, if both options are available.
- Restart the game so the change takes effect.
- Retry the interaction.
Players reported trying both APIs, with mixed results. Neither is established as the cause or a definitive fix.

4. Disable AMD FSR 1.0 on PC
- If AMD FSR 1.0 is enabled, turn it off in the graphics settings.
- Restart the game and test the interaction again.
This helped in one player report only; it is not a confirmed compatibility fix.
5. Optional: open and dismiss the Large Cookpot
- Before speaking to the head, interact with the nearby Large Cookpot and dismiss its interface.
- Then try the head interaction.
- If you change brains, repeat the sequence before speaking again.
A Reddit user shared this sequence as a workaround, with commenters reporting success on PC and PS5. The original poster described the discovery as luck, so treat it as an unverified experiment.

What if the character is still stuck?
If the interaction remains locked, reload a save from before it. That was necessary for the player in the Steam report, but an earlier save is not guaranteed to prevent the problem from happening again.
If you contact Larian Support, include your platform, game version, whether you use mods, graphics API and relevant graphics settings, and the brain and interaction sequence that led to the lock. Check your installed version and the current official patch notes or support information rather than assuming an older workaround still applies.

What do the official patch notes say?
Larian’s Patch 1 notes for version 4.1.1.3669438, dated August 25, 2023, mention a fix for unreachable items on a desk near the Slack-Skinned Head. They do not identify the dialogue soft lock as fixed.

Larian’s Hotfix #36 notes for version 4.1.1.7209685, dated March 26, 2026, list fixes for performance, crashes, Xbox tooltips, and Mac character creation, but do not mention this dialogue issue. The official news index identifies Patch 8 as the final major update and notes that small hotfixes can continue. These notes do not establish whether the specific dialogue bug is fixed in every current build.

Is the Slack-Skinned Head bug fixed?
The official notes reviewed here do not confirm that this specific dialogue soft lock was fixed. Their silence does not prove that it persists, either; check the latest official notes and support information for your installed version.
Should I use DX11 or Vulkan?
There is no established best choice for this issue. Players reported trying both, with mixed results. On PC, you can try the other available API, restart, and see whether the interaction works.
Will reloading a save fix the soft lock?
A Steam reporter said they had to reload after getting stuck, but reloading alone did not help one player. If possible, save before trying the interaction and keep an earlier save available.
