If Netflix menus appear on your TV but the video turns black when you mirror your screen, the mirroring method may be unsupported—not a setting you can fix. Netflix says AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported, and Android screen-mirroring features might not be supported. Stop mirroring and use Netflix on the TV, the Cast button inside the Netflix app with a compatible receiver, or a compatible wired connection instead.
First, identify how you’re connecting
| Connection | What it does | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| AirPlay or Screen Mirroring | Duplicates the iPhone, iPad, or computer screen. | Stop mirroring; use Netflix directly on the TV or a supported alternative. Netflix says AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported. Netflix: black screen troubleshooting |
| Android screen mirroring | Duplicates the device display through features such as Smart View or Miracast. | Stop mirroring and try Netflix’s in-app Cast button or the TV’s Netflix app. Netflix says these features might not be supported. Netflix: black screen troubleshooting |
| Cast button inside Netflix | Sends playback to a compatible receiver instead of simply duplicating the phone screen. | Check receiver compatibility and Wi-Fi discovery if the device is missing. |
| Generic “Cast screen” or third-party mirror app | Duplicates the screen; it is not the same as casting from Netflix. | Use Netflix’s Cast button if a compatible receiver is available. |
| USB-C or Lightning-to-HDMI | Sends video through a cable and adapter. | Check device video-output support, adapter, cable, display input, and HDCP compatibility. |
| Netflix app on TV or streaming device | Plays Netflix directly on the receiver. | Usually the simplest alternative to mirroring. |
Fastest fix: stop mirroring
- Stop AirPlay, Screen Mirroring, Smart View, Miracast, DeX screen duplication, or any third-party mirroring app.
- Open Netflix on the TV, streaming device, game console, or set-top box and play the title there.
- If your device supports Netflix casting, open the Netflix mobile app, sign in, select a profile, tap the Cast icon, choose a compatible receiver, then select a show or movie. Netflix’s compatible receiver list is not the same as saying every Chromecast-branded or screen-mirroring device works. Netflix: casting and mirroring
- If neither option is available, check whether your phone or tablet supports video output over a compatible wired adapter before buying one.
A phone can mirror its menus, photos, or other apps successfully while Netflix video remains black. That does not mean the receiver is compatible with Netflix playback.
iPhone and iPad: AirPlay or Screen Mirroring
Netflix says AirPlay with iPhone and iPad is not supported. To stop mirroring:
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Screen Mirroring.
- Tap Stop Mirroring or disconnect the AirPlay destination. Labels can vary by iOS or iPadOS version. Apple: stream video or mirror your device
- Use the Netflix app on the TV or a compatible streaming device, or check whether the Netflix Cast button offers a compatible receiver.
For a wired connection, the device, adapter, cable, and display must support protected video playback. Netflix recommends the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for USB-C HDMI output, while other adapters may work. Netflix also identifies Apple Lightning adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported examples. Some iPhone models do not support wired video output, so check your device and adapter before purchasing. Netflix: casting and mirroring Netflix: black screen troubleshooting

Android: Smart View, Miracast, or screen sharing
Android screen-mirroring support varies by manufacturer, and Netflix says mirroring features might not be supported. Stop Smart View, Cast Screen, Wireless Display, Miracast, DeX screen duplication, or the third-party mirroring app, then try Netflix’s in-app Cast button. If no compatible receiver appears, open Netflix using the TV or streaming device’s remote. Netflix: black screen troubleshooting
If the Netflix Cast icon or receiver is missing
- Turn on the TV or receiver and confirm it is one of Netflix’s compatible devices.
- Connect the phone or tablet and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Update Netflix and the receiver’s software, then restart the phone and receiver.
- Restart the router if the receiver still does not appear.
- Check whether a VPN, guest Wi-Fi, or network isolation setting is blocking local device discovery.
- If the receiver is not compatible, use its remote to open Netflix directly instead.
Netflix says an empty device list or missing Cast icon can mean the receiver is not discoverable or no compatible receiver is available. Fixing network discovery will not make unsupported AirPlay or screen mirroring work. Netflix: can’t find the Cast button Netflix: device not showing for casting

If a wired connection shows a black screen
A completely black picture over HDMI can point to an unsupported adapter or a problem with the protected-video connection. Netflix identifies HDCP 2.2 as relevant to certain USB-C video cable or adapter connections. Splitters, capture devices, converters, AV receivers, and some older displays can also interrupt the connection.
- Set the TV or display to the HDMI input being used.
- Connect the source directly to the TV, temporarily removing a splitter, receiver, capture device, or converter from the chain.
- Check that the phone or tablet supports wired video output and that the adapter and cable support protected video playback.
- Try another HDMI port and cable, and reverse the cable ends where applicable.
- Test the source on another display if available. If it works there, the original display, port, firmware, or compatibility may be the problem.
For a downloaded title, black bars can be caused by the video format; that is different from a completely black picture. Netflix also notes that autoplaying the next episode is not supported when using a video cable or adapter. Netflix: black screen troubleshooting Netflix: casting and mirroring

If Netflix is black even without mirroring
If you opened Netflix directly on the TV or streaming device and still get a black screen, troubleshoot the app or display connection rather than screen mirroring.
- Unplug the TV or streaming device. Press its power button once and wait one minute, or leave it unplugged for three minutes, then reconnect it.
- If you use an external player, connect it directly to the TV rather than through an AV receiver or sound system.
- Try a different HDMI port or cable, and test the player on another TV if possible.
- Follow the device-specific Netflix instructions to update, sign out of, or reinstall the app if those options are available.
- If the issue persists, check the TV or player manufacturer’s guidance for model-specific video settings and firmware.

What not to do
- Do not assume that updating Netflix will make unsupported mirroring compatible.
- Do not assume that every device labeled Cast or Chromecast is compatible with Netflix casting.
- Do not buy several adapters before confirming the source device supports video output and the display chain supports protected playback.
- Avoid DRM-bypass tools, screen-recording workarounds, and unofficial Netflix apps.
FAQ
Why does Netflix go black while my phone screen still mirrors?
The receiver may be displaying the phone interface while Netflix playback is blocked by an unsupported mirroring path. Netflix says AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported, and Android screen-mirroring features might not be supported. Netflix: black screen troubleshooting
Is screen mirroring the same as casting from Netflix?
No. Mirroring duplicates the whole device display. Casting with the Cast icon inside Netflix sends playback to a compatible receiver. A receiver that can mirror a phone or play other apps is not necessarily compatible with Netflix casting.

Does putting my phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi fix the black screen?
Being on the same Wi-Fi can help the Netflix app discover a compatible receiver. It does not make unsupported AirPlay or screen mirroring compatible.
Why is Netflix black over HDMI?
Check the selected input, device video-output support, adapter and cable, and HDCP compatibility. A splitter, receiver, capture device, or converter in the connection can also cause trouble. Netflix identifies HDCP 2.2 as relevant to certain USB-C video connections. Netflix: black screen troubleshooting
What is the most reliable way to watch Netflix on a TV?
When available, open Netflix directly on a supported TV or streaming device. Otherwise, use Netflix’s in-app Cast button with a compatible receiver or a compatible wired video connection.
